    All Hands On Deck!

    by ShoreSlayer » Sat Feb 12, 2011 7:24 am

Well, unlike that cursed Shredigan song (should've known as soon as I introduced that damn albatross - DOH!), this one will have all original music so I can almost guarantee there won't be any posts involving copyright/legal drama :beerwink:

Still toying with a couple different riff and specific style ideas and I seem to have become the slowest studio musician in history so who knows if anything will even be ready to hear before 70K 2012? lol... But thought you might all get a kick out of the lyrics in the meantime.

    Cheers

I had a dream and in that dream I died
Death took me over to the other side
Glimpse of Valhalla - I just sat back n' sighed
So THIS is heaven - (hah!) I guess the bible lied

    3000 motherfuckers dressed in black
4 corners of the heavy metal globe and back
Best of the best guitarists all attacked
Riffage built to die for and a hundred Marshall stacks

Backstage was everywhere and quite insane
Deck hand or captain metal all the same
No room for egos or pretentious fame
The muster drill began and did proclaim

    All Hands on Deck!
Majesty of the Seas is set to sail tonight
    All Hands on Deck!
We're pullin into your port and it's a scary sight
    All Hands on Deck!
Loot, rape and pillage cuz it's our duty free right
    All Hands on Deck!
    Your - Boat - Sucks!

    solo(s)

Walkin' around butt naked no it ain't no crime
Jacked up on metal and we're all in our prime
Knockin' back buckets of Corona n' lime
So many stages but just so little time

Somehow it all seemed like it could never end
3000 strangers now all family n' friends
Fall in the mosh pit and an arm would extend
Nothin' else like it on that you can depend

    All Hands on Deck!
Majesty of the Seas is sittin' quiet tonight
    All Hands on Deck!
Fan, cast and crew all back at home it ain't right
    All Hands on Deck!
Old world of dark now has a glimmer of light
    All Hands on Deck!
    Your - Boat - Sucks!

I had a dream and in that dream I died
Death brought me back to the reality side
Taste of Valhalla - I broke down and cried
So that was heaven - Can't wait to turn the tide

Yeah, I was originally hearing the first verses with a real dark, doom/death dirge sort of vocal over some slow grinding kind of chords but it's the lyrics and structure sort of took on a bit of a party, almost anthemic quality as it progressed so I'm still searching for the right combination of riffs / vocal approaches. I prefer to start with a riff, build on it then add lyrics based on the feel of the song but these lyrics just sort of spewed out on their own so I'll have to search for a fitting musical backdrop for them. Stach has me conjuring metal sea shanties in my mind now thanks to his calling it a sailing tune but I don't wanna end up doing Newfoundland Folk Metal so we'll have to wait n' see what comes up.

    All contributions gratefully accepted!

    However, keep in mind...

Putting YOUR art to MY music is like putting 70K Tons bands to Etch-a-Sketch art.

Ya might just wanna think in terms of stick figures and ink blots for this puppy

That being said, if I could come up with a final recording that was worthy of one of your pieces, I believe I'd wind up sportin' a grin quite similar to the one that was plastered to my face for most of our cruise :D

As long as you have the song finished, rehearsed, and ready to perform as we all leave port in 2012, all is cool (Nice work). For the 2012 criuse try to remember to arrive at least a day early so you are well rested for the festivities and rockin' us with your tune.

Sure thing... They're all coming over next weekend anyways so I'll just throw it out there

Rhia - There may very well be need for reinforcements once things progress. Went for a nice(ish) drive today to see my Dad n' StepMom as they had to cancel last weekend (Dad took a fall while I was away  ) and had a couple intriguing ideas on the way home about direction(s) for this. I was thrilled with Jacob's contribution to the last one and there's so very many talented metalheads here, I'd love nothing more than to find a way to get everyone in on it if possible/desired/etc. Gonna be a couple weeks percolating various riffs and stuff but as things move along, I'll update here and throw out various invitations to the masses. I don't wanna get ahead of myself cuz I'll end up in manic overload but yeah, more to follow.

Of course, I'm not sure if I should read into the lyrics following that line to deeply or not.

Diana said she's willing to contribute vocals, if this becomes a group effort, like Stars or some such thing.

lol! No man, the following line just expands on the idea of the verse, not directed at you at all. But yes, I did intentionally work your 'name' in there without it really referencing you in any way but just an attempt at sort of cleverly hiding a friend in the mix. Hope ya don't mind.

Have to say I'm humbled by all the contribution offers. Not gonna sell myself short but also nowhere near so bold as to suggest I could compose on a level anywhere near the mighty RJD (ala Stars). I am gonna work my ass off to generate something worthy of the fun I've had here with you all and on our trip. Even if it ends up in my digital dustbin with the last one, it too will be a labor of love n' laughter.

The funny thing is, I can imagine 20 ppl reading the lyrics and hearing the song done 20 different ways. With the mass variety of sub-genres alone, you could easily have 10 completely different metal takes on this just based on lyrics. So no matter what result I come up with, I'm sure many will hate it lol. If I had the time, energy, chops and a split personality, I'd love to do 4 or 5 versions of the song in different metal styles but as I haven't been writing much at all lately, I think I'd be spreading myself too thin to even attempt such an undertaking. Guess I'll just go with the strongest riffs I come up with that appeal to me the most and just hope for the best

I doubt there'll be any flag waving. Feels more like an order of command followed by an exclamation of sorts. Not exactly patriotic or sentimental

Nice text mate, I have to say that this would be best for Alestorm to be honest ... hopefully they open with this one next year haha =)
Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment

No offense but screw Alestorm, they can't have it!! Verse riff and drums are already complete and the chorus is almost a no brainer but just trying to find a way to make it really anthemic/sing alongish. Not that the Beatles reference will make sense to all but my writing has always been way too much Lennon and not enough McCartney. Those simple little pop hooks that stick in ppl's heads with ease have always eluded me.

I think the line All Hands on Deck should be doubled

ie all hands on deck (lead vocal) ... all hands on deck (rest of band) crowd

All Hands on Deck! (all hands on deck)
Majesty of the Seas is set to sail tonight
All Hands on Deck! (all hands on deck)
We're pullin into your port and it's a scary sight
All Hands on Deck! (all hands on deck)
Loot, rape and pillage cuz it's our duty free right
All Hands on Deck! (all hands on deck)
    Your - Boat - Sucks!

just a suggestion ...... fills out the chorus a little more

An awesome idea sir. Would definitely add to the anthemic element I mentioned earlier and anything that allows for call and response crowd stuff like that can always be fun.

Thanks for the idea bro. If I don't go with it, it's only because whatever chorus riff I settle on wouldn't accommodate it or it failed to fit musically somehow the way I need.

Better call up Jeff Waters to shred a guitar solo on that bad boy. He's good like that :shred:

And while we're at it, maybe Deb can get the Forbidden guys to contribute. Russ singing a few lines would be sweet.

Now that I think about it, maybe I'll try to get the Amon Amarth guys in on this when they pass through in April.

Outside of one local band I've contacted, I wasn't thinking of any contributors outside of forum members. You've got some pretty grand designs sir. Ya may wanna wait to actually hear a sample before you go approaching such gifted folks. Even if that vocalist does wear a 'Singer for Rent' shirt (I'm guessing the rent wouldn't come cheap lol).

Thanks to Jeff the non-mimbo for cluing me in as to how to properly utilize a certain piece of software, I pretty much just quadrupled my efficiency and flexibility in terms of drum track composition as well as other general songwriting/production aspects. So, happy to report, this thing is now WAY ahead of schedule. Rough demo should be done in a few weeks and have already started contacting drummers to move towards a non-programmed drum version. Probably do much of this one at my buddy John's studio too instead of in my living room haha. Gonna PM some ppl here who've expressed some interest but had a general question I was hoping someone may have the answer to.

During the chorus, where it says all hands on deck, I'm almost certain it's gonna go All (All) Hands (Hands) On (On) Deck with the main vocals singing the first part and then like a crowd cheer/chant on the bracketed parts. I can't think of an example of the top of my head right now but I'm sure I've heard songs where it sounds like a freaking army of friends/fans are singing/yelling out certain parts (Accept's Balls to the Wall comes to mind). I was wondering if anyone knew of an ideal way to accomplish this without actually gathering a real life crowd or having 100 individuals record their parts in chunks and then just layering them all together. Any and all ideas n' suggestions welcomed.

    Thnx in advance

Rob, maybe some type of echo effect may accomplish the crowd response you're looking for. it can make 4-5 people sound larger. I know I've heard it somewhere before ... I think maybe a KISS song not sure though. looping and layering might be what you have to do, or maybe talk to your local high school choir to see if they can help. just a thought
