So, in the beer thread, Kaluvia asked for folks to recommend 4 songs from each of the bands on the cruise that she's unfamiliar with. I don't know much about many of the 'newer' bands on the bill but can at least offer some suggestions about the older ones. Just my opinions of course, I'm sure others can offer more. In all instances, for full value, I recommend turning these songs FUCKING LOUD!!!
Trouble - First album, Psalm 9, is classic from front to back but I'd recommend Victim Of The Insane and the title track for sure. To see what they sort of grew into over the years, check out Fear from Manic Frustration or At The End Of My Daze from Trouble. Apparently the album they're currently working on with a new vocalist is a return to their doom roots from the early album so my expectations are pretty high.
Raven - So many songs/albums to choose from but I'd just say give anything from One For All a listen and you'll have a good idea what these guys are about. Almost 30 years later and their newest release sounds like the exact same band. Some might say, "Where's the growth?" I say, "If it ain't broke..."
Death Angel - When they recorded The Ultra-Violence, I think the oldest guy in the band was 17 years old. I like the groove of Voracious Souls from this one but Mistress of Pain is pretty cool too. The follow up, Frolic Through The Park was a bit of a let down for some as it's not quite as heavy but lots of catchy tunes. Check out Bored, 3rd Floor, Confused or the KISS cover, Cold Gin and you'll have a pretty good idea of what these guys bring to the stage. I really like Shores Of Sin too. They were broken up for years and then reunited 5 or 6 years ago and are currently working on their 3rd album in that time. All of it pretty solid stuff in my opinion but some people aren't as impressed.
Saxon - Another band that's been around 30 years or so. I feel ill equipped to give advice about what to listen to though cuz they've put out so many albums and I only ever really listened to a couple of 'em (Crusader and Power & The Glory) and they're not their most popular efforts. Denim & Leather was a big hit for them. Their latest, Inner Sanctum really impressed me (check out Ashes To Ashes). (EDIT - I thought this was their latest but there's actually a newer CD called Into The Labyrinth that I was unaware of)
I'm sure others here can recommend some better individual songs.
Testament - These guys went from heavy to really fucking heavy over the course of the ten years I really followed them, and they're 'reunion' album, Formation of Damnation is pretty damn good and has been well received (you'll for sure hear and be expected to sing along with More Than Meets the Eye on the ship haha). A sampling of their 'mellower' stuff would include Apocalyptic City, Into The Pit, Disciples Of The Watch, Practice What You Preach, Souls Of Black and many others. Then they had some personnel changes and worked with James Murphy, Gene Hoglan, Dave Lombardo and others and really pushed the heavy for the albums Low, Demonic and The Gathering. Check out the songs John Doe and Legions of the Dead.
Okay, enough from me and my top five from those announced so far. Enjoy
