    Metal Recommendations

    by audrey » Tue Mar 30, 2010 8:45 pm

I love finding new metal (as I am sure you all do :headbanger: ) so I thought I would ask what you think we all need to listen to. Given the vast variety of people, and the different locations we all live in, I am hoping to find some great new stuff to listen to.

Here are some bands that I would recommend from my area:

    Wolven Ancestry - http://www.myspace.com/wolvenancestry
Will Of The Ancients - http://www.myspace.com/willoftheancients
    Sig:Ar:Tyr - http://www.myspace.com/sigartyr
    Battlesoul - http://www.myspace.com/battlesoulmetal
    Bolero - http://www.myspace.com/bolerometal
    Borealis - http://www.myspace.com/borealismetal
    Skull Fist - http://www.myspace.com/skullfisted
    Cauldron - http://www.myspace.com/cauldronmetal
I think that is good for now (although I could keep going lol).

Also check out Clad in Darkness (Chicago) http://www.myspace.com/cladindarkness, and Helfahrt (Germany) http://www.myspace.com/helfahrt.

Hope you find something you like!

Mammoth (Australia) - http://www.myspace.com/mammoththeband Josh Barohn (original Suffocation bassist) new band

Madder Mortem (Norway) - http://www.myspace.com/maddermortem Criminally underrated and one of my favorite bands. Different, but not out in left field. If I won the lottery this is the band I would personally pay for to tour the USA just to get them more exposure and stroke my own ego. :D

Eyes of Fire (CA/USA) - http://www.myspace.com/eyesoffire1 Former members of the brilliant Mindrot in this equally brilliant newer band. Currently on hiatus.

Frankly I don't see a whole lot of an underground scene here in the Central Florida area. The only time I see local shows it's for a slew of grind/joke bands with names so stupid and idiotic that it wasn't funny or original in 1990.

    Mendozza - http://www.myspace.com/mendozza

    Golers - http://www.myspace.com/golers

    Bison B.C. - http://www.myspace.com/bisoneastvan

Already loved Mammoth, really liked Borealis, Cauldron, Skullfist, Battlesoul and Eyes of Fire!

A couple other worthwhile Vancouver notes would include

New Burton C. Bell, Byron Stroud and others, City Of Fire - http://www.myspace.com/thecityoffire

New Chris Valagos (Zimmer's Hole vocals) project with Gene Hoglan on drums, Mechanism - http://www.myspace.com/mechanismarmy

Are you a MINDROT fan ? I have a copy of their 1992 Faded Dream promo (which landed them their record deal with Relapse) on cassette. It was never pressed on CD, so I'm not sure how I would actually make a copy of it (heck I don't even own a cassette player anymore). Alot of the songs appeared on the Relapse CD's, but I liked the original versions even better.

Never heard of them sorry. In fact, I'm not sure Mammoth is the Mammoth I was thinking of. I'm at work and have the links I'm looking for at home but can't find them here now for some reason. A few other bands with Mammoth come up in my searches but not the one I'm thinking of. Cool band though (the one you linked). Interesting that they are big Crowbar fans and have a cover of No Quarter on their player that sounds very similar to Crowbar's cover of same song from their self titled 1993 album.

I have a deck running into a 12 channel mixer that runs to my computer so I can convert my old tapes to digital. Currently sifting through about 50 old jam tapes from the 80's and 90's lol

Well, I'm not sure this fits here but I couldn't find a better thread to post it to.

Gordie Johnson is from Canada and fronted Big Sugar for years (5 or 6 albums and lots of tours) before disbanding them, and moving to Austin, Texas to form Grady, a 3 piece with the goal of sounding like "Motorhead backing up John Lee Hooker". I've seen them live a few times now (saw Big Sugar plenty of times as well) and their live sets get pretty heavy. They're really not metal. I mean, their roots are in heavy rock / blues but there are elements there that could be labeled as metal. Definitely won't please most the hardcore death or black metal fans but folks who enjoy heavy rock/grunge/heavy alternative(?) and bands that straddle the rock/metal boundaries might enjoy.

http://www.youtube.com/gradymusicaustin Check out the heavy part in the middle and tell me how you'd classify it, if not metal. Enjoy :trashdrink:

Sorry I'm at work and myspace is blocked so I can't do links.

Destroyer666 (I'm conviced that their album Phoenix Rising is written about my karma)
    3 Inches of Blood
    D.R.I. (punk/thrash/punk)
December Wolves (the older stuff "Completely Dehumanized")
    Goatwhore
    Watch Them Die
    Korpiklaani
    Powermad (Absolute Power)
Angra (I'm obsessed with the accoustic version of No Pain for the Dead)
    Turisas
    Eluveitie

And for something very very un-metal I recommend R.L. Burnside ("Its bad you know")

Thats all the "off the beaten path" stuff I can come up with right now...

Ok, this is also off the beaten path, but I dig blues (SRV, J Lang, Kenny Wayne Sheppard etc) and after all, no blues = no Metal, right!? Anyway if you are a blues hound, check out http://www.anthonygomes.com

Anthony Gomes (pronounced like homes, not the spanish pronunciation) is a Canadian guy, seen him live a few times and he is hands down one of the best live performers I have EVER witnessed. He had a recent, thankfully brief foray into rock/country-crossover but has recently abandoned that for the blues again. The guy can make a blues axe positively wail and has a KILLER voice to boot.

He's been struggling to make it over the top for years, sadly that huge break may never come but who knows.... In any case give the guy a listen. And for gods sake, if you get the chance to catch him live, DO NOT MISS IT!

annnnd this is a straight-up Bar Room Rock recommendation:

New Album from Airbourne just arrived (slow ass Amazon seller I pre-ordered before the Apr 20 release) Anyway, it is called "No Guts No Glory". If you don't know them they are an Australian band, and be prepared, they are MAJOR AC/DC knockoffs. http://www.airbournerock.com/ But if you can do knock-off well, then it's fine by me and this one kicks major ass (far better than Black Ice IMHO).

Good chance these guys could appear on the cruise because they are currently a supporting act on the Rock Star Energy drink with a bunch of Nu-metal bands (DISTURBED, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, STONE SOUR, HALESTORM, HELLYEAH) They are definitely odd-man-out on that gig, but they'd be a great fit for 70,000 Tons.

Haven't seen 'em live yet, but have a buddy that has and his and most online reviews are really positive, super high energy, loud and raunchy!

    Three Thumbs Up!

So, in the beer thread, Kaluvia asked for folks to recommend 4 songs from each of the bands on the cruise that she's unfamiliar with. I don't know much about many of the 'newer' bands on the bill but can at least offer some suggestions about the older ones. Just my opinions of course, I'm sure others can offer more. In all instances, for full value, I recommend turning these songs FUCKING LOUD!!!

Trouble - First album, Psalm 9, is classic from front to back but I'd recommend Victim Of The Insane and the title track for sure. To see what they sort of grew into over the years, check out Fear from Manic Frustration or At The End Of My Daze from Trouble. Apparently the album they're currently working on with a new vocalist is a return to their doom roots from the early album so my expectations are pretty high.

Raven - So many songs/albums to choose from but I'd just say give anything from One For All a listen and you'll have a good idea what these guys are about. Almost 30 years later and their newest release sounds like the exact same band. Some might say, "Where's the growth?" I say, "If it ain't broke..."

Death Angel - When they recorded The Ultra-Violence, I think the oldest guy in the band was 17 years old. I like the groove of Voracious Souls from this one but Mistress of Pain is pretty cool too. The follow up, Frolic Through The Park was a bit of a let down for some as it's not quite as heavy but lots of catchy tunes. Check out Bored, 3rd Floor, Confused or the KISS cover, Cold Gin and you'll have a pretty good idea of what these guys bring to the stage. I really like Shores Of Sin too. They were broken up for years and then reunited 5 or 6 years ago and are currently working on their 3rd album in that time. All of it pretty solid stuff in my opinion but some people aren't as impressed.

Saxon - Another band that's been around 30 years or so. I feel ill equipped to give advice about what to listen to though cuz they've put out so many albums and I only ever really listened to a couple of 'em (Crusader and Power & The Glory) and they're not their most popular efforts. Denim & Leather was a big hit for them. Their latest, Inner Sanctum really impressed me (check out Ashes To Ashes). (EDIT - I thought this was their latest but there's actually a newer CD called Into The Labyrinth that I was unaware of)

I'm sure others here can recommend some better individual songs.

Testament - These guys went from heavy to really fucking heavy over the course of the ten years I really followed them, and they're 'reunion' album, Formation of Damnation is pretty damn good and has been well received (you'll for sure hear and be expected to sing along with More Than Meets the Eye on the ship haha). A sampling of their 'mellower' stuff would include Apocalyptic City, Into The Pit, Disciples Of The Watch, Practice What You Preach, Souls Of Black and many others. Then they had some personnel changes and worked with James Murphy, Gene Hoglan, Dave Lombardo and others and really pushed the heavy for the albums Low, Demonic and The Gathering. Check out the songs John Doe and Legions of the Dead.

Okay, enough from me and my top five from those announced so far. Enjoy

There are times for many metalheads when you need a break from heavy stuff. That, or you're in a mellow mood, or maybe you've indulged in some *cough* herbal relaxation.

In those instances, I urge you all to check out (some of the many) projects from Arjen Lucassen:

Ayreon - Lyrically follows a story (over 7-8 albums) about a futuristic (c 2084) earth with aliens and such. Mutiple guest musicians (Ie; dozens and dozens of famous singers such as Hansi Kursch, James Labrie, Russel Allen etc.) make up the story and play characters. It's very chill, acoustic sometimes, proggy, techno-ish space metal. The cheese factor is quite high mind you, but there are some really great melodies. Recommended Albums: 01011001, and The Human Equation.

Guilt Machine - Similar to Ayreon musically, slightly heavier and more progressive. Lyrical theme is different and there is a set lineup of four musicians on the whole album.

EDIT: I should probably include a link to some of his stuff haha. Here's his myspace with samples of Ayreon, Guilt Machine, and Star One. http://www.myspace.com/ayreonauts

Those are quite possibly some of the funniest black metal pictures I've seen in a long time. The photoshopping is beyond bad and stupid. It's a toss up between the hawk or the bow and arrow.

Not to mention the name of the drummer is "Ass Bath". Yeah I know I added an extra S to the name, but it still sounds like it without it. Musically it seems standard black metal (good or bad, YMMV)

Yeah, I know...they're awesome :D , did you notice the vocalist is a chick :beerhorns: It is standard black metal, (with mid-eastern influences) but it is written and played competently. I like 'em.

The male vocals in Unexpect sound almost identical to "Sleepytime Gorilla Museum" (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). Never have seen SGM and would love to one day, but I digress.

Anyways, Unexpect might the the first Canadian band in a long while that I give more than 2 shakes of a lamb's tail

Keeping with the babies theme, I kinda like: (though need to spend more time on the rest of their catalog)

I discovered both bands for myself when they opened for Skeleton Key & they both floored me.

Living in Canada I've been able to see Unexpect a few times & they put on a great show.

Funny you mentioned Sleepytime Gorrilla Museum, Stolen Babies CD was produced by Dan Rathburn of the same band. Another metal connection for the Babies is their drummer Gil Sharone is the newest member of Dillinger Escape Plan.

Something female fronted with only a very slight symphonic touch - mainly power metal spiced with some classic rock and a tiny little bit thrash. :shred:

Magica are from Romania. "Dark Diary" is their 5th studio album.

Went to check out Kevin's suggestion and had a friend request from these guys from Greece. It's a compilation of various bands.

Honestly, I just really liked the first song quite a bit. Took me back to the days of early raw thrash and I enjoyed the way he sings Captain Jimmy Fucknut! The third band sounds pretty cool too. edit - Mentally Defiled - The Thrash Brigade is great too. Yeah, thrash and doom are definitely my favourite sub-genres of metal without a doubt.

Mutiny Within is my latest new find: http://www.mutinywithin.com

I have't come across a new band that I liked very much for a long time.

See these guys live if possible. They have a great show. It was almost better that whom they headlined for...

Ouch, honestly I couldn't get past 5 seconds of the music without closing my browser. Besides the music they have 2 more things going against them:

    1 - Roadrunner
2 - they look like a bunch of tools

I know, "don't judge a book by it's cover". But I prejudged and I was totally right.

Oh wow, really. Good to hear what others think...

But I loved their stage show. It was full of soul. Everybody in the band was so much into it.
There was way more ...umm...roaring than the album in the live show that threw my husband off. I actually like it in moderation.

They're coming here on tour with Soilwork/DEATH ANGEL so I wanted to familiarize myself with their stuff. Pretty diverse and decent sounds on their myspace samples. Pretty polished for a fairly young band as well. I think I'll enjoy their set. Strong mix of vocal tone with harmonies and the less discernible cookie monster stuff.

I'm curious Kevin, what's the Roadrunner knock? I've been exposed to some of my many faves as a result of this label but I don't follow industry info so may be missing a reference.

And what do looks have to do with music and talent (or lack thereof)? Aren't those judgments more suited to the pop world? If not, I guess it's a good thing YOU'RE not trying to start a band anytime soon eh? :P
