Just saw Enslaved. Grutle came and hung out after the show and a bunch of us talked about hockey for like an hour. Was pretty cool :death:

Last Show was Testament, Overkill, Flotsam and Jetsam, unfortunately Overkill could not perform due to Bobby Blitz coming down with pneumonia. It was disappointing, but Flotsam and Jetsam put on a fabulous show which helped make up for it. If Bobby can't sing, what can ya do? I think they did the right thing. Testament was awesome! (And they filmed it). Still have bruises and shit from that show.

Was supposed to go to Shadows Fall and Hatebreed on Sunday, but it got sold out, i'd never imagine a Hatebreed/SF show being sold out, but we couldn't go.

Next we got lined up for sure is 3/13 - Adrenaline Mob

Turisas on March 8t and Paganfest on March 29th. I'm still not sure about Turisas. Depends on wether I have a job then and wether I get to leave at a decent time. Hopefully, I'll be there.

Turisas and Doro were both in town last night and I skipped both

If you asked me two years ago, I would've said Turisas is the best live band I've seen. Now I wouldn't even put them in the top 15 or so. So sad.

Last gig: Meshuggah & Animals as Leaders Friday night at House of Blues, Chicago

Animals as Leaders - wow! As I expected (based on youtubing), I was really blown away by these guys - they are so unique to me and really bring something new to my musical table. While watching them, I was reminded of how much I really love guitar music on its own without vocals. Although I've not seen many of the guitar greats (namely in my book "old-school" guitarists like Jimmy Page & Eric Clapton), I have seen quite a few live beginning as a teenager - some highlights off the top of my head have been Steve Howe (solo as well as many times with Yes), blues great Buddy Guy, Pat Metheny (one of my very favorites), Uli Jon Roth, Jeff Beck, Adrian Belew (solo), Tommy Emmanuel, Eddie van Halen, & Ted Nugent (say what you will about Ted, but I've long thought of him as one of the best guitarists & performers ever :P ). Oh, and I'll throw in the Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela who I enjoyed immensely when we saw them a few years back. And now I will add Tosin Abasi of Animals as Leaders to that list. I think it is hard to describe his playing really - you just have to watch and hear it - and live I think it is extraordinary. I will definitely see AAL again when they tour again.

Meshuggah, on the other hand, left me somewhat cold. After first hearing them (just a few months ago), I didn't care for them much, then warmed up to them slightly, and was kinda hoping seeing them live might win me over, but it didn't :| , so that was somewhat disappointing. To get the "full effect" of them, I started out very close to the stage (behind people at the rail, then a bit later moved to the side by the bar, and then finally center on the raised area behind the pit so I could more fully appreciate the light show. But again, not so keen on them and the odd thing of it is I can't really pinpoint the exact reason(s) why. Ah well, c'est la vie. I don't regret seeing them (and as I said, I loved AAL), but I would not go out of my way to see them again.

Next gig: three bands I have seen before and who I really love: Marduk, Inquisition, & Moonspell on Wednesday - now that is one helluva triple bill! :D And at the moment I am remembering two of my personal 70K highlights - Moonspell doing Night Eternal on the pool deck and Marduk doing Imago Mortis on the pool deck - both late at night as I recall.

I'll be seeing that tour in 2 days  I'm pretty excited. I'm more excited for AAL but you're the first person that I've heard saying you weren't blown away by Meshuggah so I think I'll enjoy it. At the very least I'll have a few drinks and bang my head off. I agree that AAL is incredible live, the only issue I had is that it was too good. He played insanely tight and they use Axe FX live so it didn't even really sound...real. I almost wish he were a tiny tiny bit sloppier live, or he could use an actual amp so that it actually sounds like he's playing it right in front of me rather than playing along to a recording. Stupid issue to have though and I'm just being really picky haha. Anyone else feel this way about AAL live?

Ha, yeah - maybe I am the rare one not caring for them much, but then again, if we were to take a poll of just the 70K forumites - I suspect that hard-core Meshuggah fans (or even ones that would be simply "blown away" by them live regardless of whether they were hitherto big fans of the music) may be the minority here. Whaddya think? I am still perplexed why I don't care for them though. It's not that I don't like "harsh" or "heavy" music, or "aggressive" music, or "difficult" music, or "strange" music, or "dissonant" music, or "complex" music - or any of that (and I'm not saying that Meshuggah is even necessarily any of those things specifically). I guess somehow the music is just kind of grating (as in irritating) to my head/ears/brain (whatever) after awhile. There are so few bands that I've heard in my life that I would describe in that way, so part of why I was intrigued to go was to hear them live to see what I'd think or if there would be any difference. Haha - so now I know! Regardless, Joey - no doubt you'll have a good time - I definitely did all around!

I think maybe the issue is that sometimes they're so focussed on writing cool rhythems and being prog that they forget to write decent songs. That's kinda my biggest issue with them. The only album I can actually make it through without getting bored of is Obzen. Which is weird because like you said they have lots of things that I like they just kinda bore me sometimes.

I've been listening to Meshuggah for almost 15 years so I'm not going to be able to understand alot of Stained or Laura's comments. I'm a Destroy Erase Improve and Chaosphere are landmark untouchable albums guy. Now, Meshuggah basically doesn't play anything from those albums on this tour...... but they are still awesome live. They just dominate w/ their groove. They used to dominate w/ alot more speed/precision.

I've learned that I am definitely more the minority on this board. Who knows.....

Well, this isn't the first time we've had differing tastes on something ;) It could be that those albums had a different effect when they came out compared to now.

Thanks for chiming in here, rwalters  - because I was hoping you and some of the other Meshuggah fans (Disco, meshuggah, Drinkmoxie?) would comment on them. I can see that you would have a different perspective on them at least in part because you've been listening to them for a long time and were perhaps influenced strongly by those early albums when they were released. Me, on the the other hand, had a Meshuggah crash course in a very short period of time (few months) prior to seeing them. So, there is that...but, more so - what comes up every now and again here is how unique all of our tastes are - and I think that is really cool. I actually very much like reading people's opinions of what they like & why - especially if it's something I'm not crazy about. (I like to ask myself...hmmm - what is it that they are hearing and I'm not? And vice versa) :beerwink:

Meshuggah is likely to be one of the world's toughest live bands ever and it is useless even to discuss other think , I've seen the band about six times, first time in 1995 when they were warm up machine head, and I've never seen a bad gig Meshuggah ,great band from the record Also

Those older albums may not have the same impact as they do today because Meshuggah has influenced so many modern artists and it may take away from the uniqueness of those albums if you're listening to them for the first time today.

For me, that doesn't matter. Reign In Blood in still one of the best 5 albums I've ever heard. Operation Mindcrime is still godlike. These albums were all out for many years before I even listened to music. Don't mess w/ history. I'm not purely a "older is better guy." I would put 2000 albums like Mastodon's Leviathan, Killswitch Engage's Alive or Just Breathing and Lamb of God's As the Palaces Burn as untouchable classics at this point.

The first Ghost album could get there, but need more time to pass for certainty.

    Anyhow.... back to Meshuggah.

Like I said.... Destroy Erase Improve is a top notch album. It started the whole thing (well I guess the None EP could have... gotta watch out for DrinkMoxie  ).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChzWzkTwxIs

That song's riffing at around 2:15 is probably my favorite riffing section ever. Meshuggah used to be way more about soloing (Animals As Leadersesque) than they are now. They are purely about groove now and rarely turn to their more thrash roots (some exceptions on last two discs).

Also.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBEUTntgMOI is one of the most impressive songs from any band you'll ever hear. Wish they could do it live, but completely understand why they can't. The drumming seems a tad impossible.

Reign In Blood is another album that I just can't get into. The 2 after that I can though.

I'm listening to those songs you posted. Soul Burn sounds pretty good so far.

    Holy shit dude.

Do you at least like Rust in Peace from Megadeth? That's my #1 album ever. I've literally beat Megadeth into people before. It's almost like a mission.
