Last gig (last night at the Chicago Theater)

Freakishly awesome - was totally blown away by all these guys playing tribute to the late, great Jimi Hendrix - especially 77 year old Chicago rock & blues legend Buddy Guy. We'd seen him before, but it had been a long time. And Zakk Wylde doing Purple Haze..... wow. I'd see him again in a heartbeat (first time seeing him) - what a performer - and over-the-top badass hot "metal guy."

Essen Death Feast last night was awesome! Ecocide was freaking amazing, as was Leng Tch'e and Prostitute Disfigurement. Pungent Stench was louder than Manowar or Motörhead.
Turock is most definitely one of the best venues in the world, and the German audience is always awesome.

Last Gig: The Ocean, Scale the Summit, & Atlas Moth at Subterranean in Wicker Park, Chicago last night.

Well, as expected, it was a night of outstanding music and performance. I know I say that about a lot of things….but seriously, The Ocean doing Pelagial in its entirety was one of those “peak” music experiences that I will never forget. I love the idea of a band performing an entire album – and in my view – that is the way that any song from Pelagial *must* be heard, that is, as part of the whole epic Concept Album that it is. I’d listened to the album many, many times before (at least 25?), so my familiarity with its ebbs and flows most definitely enhanced the experience. Simply put, the music/concept is expansive, deep & breathtaking.

I was in the second row (standing) in front of the stage of the very small (and somewhat odd) venue that is Subterranean. The truly in-your-face (physically & metaphorically) effect of this band (particularly singer Loïc Rossetti) was therefore maximized to the utmost. Holy crap, that guy is intense. Not only did he dive into the audience a number of times, but he did something I’ve never see any performer do. Subterranean is an odd venue as I said – small and narrow main floor with an even smaller second floor that has a balcony where only about two deep’s worth of people can stand along the right and left side looking down at the stage (can't believe the place doesn't violate some kind of fire or other building code). At one point, Loic took the tiny spiral stair located at the back corner of the stage to the balcony, climbed over the rail and was moving and climbing along the rails (essentially hanging over the audience like a monkey - haha), singing all the while. So, I’m thinking to myself – "is this guy going to jump/fall down in the audience on the ground floor?" And just as is if it had been choreographed many times with the guys below (audience was about 95% male, I wager), he kind of nodded to them, fell/jumped, they caught him, passed him back up to the stage, and Loic continued on never missing a beat. Now, I by no means *require* that kind of intensity & theatrics to enjoy a gig (I enjoy a great deal of low-key & mellow music & performances as well)...but man, that was spectacular. And as far as Loic's vocal style (whatever it's called) - I must say that it has really grown on me & love it now.

Next gig: November's Doom Friday night (maybe, if I can swing it). If not, Ragnarokkr Metal Apocalypse weekend at Reggie's April 4-5. Not a big fan of the kind of music/bands on the bill (Riot, Grim Reaper & tons more), but lots of 70K/Barge friends will be there including many from out of town - yay!

Amazing musicianship, but everything else was god awful. Zero crowd interaction, little to no stage presence (basically stood still the entire time) and the over-sized screen in the background playing a dance/electronic light show was horribly distracting. Don't get me started on the stupidly random metalcore/prog crowd... so much flailing.

Next: Wacken Metal Battle w/ Unleash the Archers. Possibly Carcass before that, but I don't think I have the time that day.

That's actually really surprising. The Calgary show was awesome. He was really moving on stage, the crowd had good energy, he made sure to talk to the crowd every couple songs. Maybe he was burned out from the awesomeness of the Calgary show

Last show: Led Zeppelin 2 this past Friday. They are a very good cover band from Chicago. They performed Physical Graffiti in its entirety.

Was supposed to have Jake E. Lee's Red Dragon Cartel on Saturday but the band cancelled.
