[New Bands] Post Bands You've Recently Discovered

    by Ecliptica » Wed Jun 22, 2011 11:00 pm

Since Admiral Nobeard from Swashbuckle and I are totally best friends, he sent me this link earlier for a New Jersey "epic folk metal" band and they are absolutely fuckin' phenomenal.

I don't have the words to describe how good this is -- this is absolutely my favorite type of music. They only have TWO songs up and only 168 total listens, so it feels good to be one of the first people to listen to them. They're opening for an Admiral Nobeard side project in New Jersey in July, and I figured you guys would be pretty interested.

They remind me -- and sound like an exact clone -- of early Ensiferum. The singer is very comparable to Jari (though I think he's actually a bit better  ).

    They're called Windfaerer --> http://www.purevolume.com/windfaerer

Now post bands you recently discovered for us all to enjoy. They don't have to necessarily be "new" bands, but just bands you've recently gotten into that you think everyone else here should hear.

I saw Brymir play saturday and they were quite good. They surely have their inspiration from Ensiferum and Markus is singing backing vocals on one or more tracks.

Another Ensiferum clone that I recently discovered but that of course is not as good as the original is Northland (from Spain WTF?). Saw them play at WGT and they were actually very good. But their clean vocals suck in my opinion.

Another band that I've recently started enjoying is Insomnium, I checked them out after seeing them in some wishlist in here :D I've just ordered one of their cd's.

Good band (or one man band). Chris Black is a very talented dude. If you don't mind a little more black metalish type music you might like Nachtmystium. Chris Black does a decent amount of work with Blake Judd (lyrics, singing here and there and guitar leads here and there) Their newest album Addicts is a really good listen.

Here are a couple tracks to scope that have a little of a Dawnbringer vibe.

    Addicts - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKqBQq-jCrs
    Life of Fire - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0bWW23o ... re=related
Eulogy IV - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXpBvbOu ... re=related (Chris Blake does the solo stuff in it - More BM though)

Their newest album might be a good place to start though if you aren't much into black metal type music.

Hmmm, Weapon. I like Drakonian Paradigm better than the newest. Lot of good riffs that stick to me and has a cool production vibe (very loose and not typical over compressed).

I know these guys, they jam in the same building as my band. Some of them are really nice but the rest are really... antagonizing?, I dunno what to make of them. They are okay live, but when they played Edmonton on tour with Rudra from Singapore they got completely stomped.

I don't know the music of November's Doom, but I see they will be guest djs at The Exit this Sunday - can't make it but sounds like fun - that's where Matt (who you met at Forbidden) and I met Grutle Kjellson :D of Enslaved :beerhorns: who was the guest dj after the Dimmu/Enslaved gig last November.

It's nice to discover a band that has been around a while. Then you have several albums to check out instead of waiting for the next one.

That's cool. Yea I never met em or anything though I believe they were on a tour that came through here. I think the main foundation of the band is the singer/guitarist and the drummer. I know from interviews I read they had a falling out with some old members and apparently some drug issues (heroin). They are Satanist (As par for the course with black metal) as well though hopefully they aren't being a ass to ya to hold up such a image (a la watain style). Hmm Rubra, I'll have to scope them. Don't know any bands from Singapore though I know a label is ran outta there. Just ordered the new remastered Desultory from em.

I bought the one with the chick on the front with a gun in her mouth a while back. Then everyone was making a huge deal about the new Shining from norway . . .

Needless to say it wasn't the same band, haha

I think the singer has done some over the top type shit. I think he made the list of the 10 most extreme black metal persons. I'll post it in the BM thread not to jack this one :beerwink:

I discovered them while looking to see if Behemoth was touring. Apparently there were visa issues getting them to the states, which dropped them from the tour, I would assume related to the singer you mentioned. I purchased the same album. Cool tunes anyway.

Seems as though a lot of these bands are coming out. In the vein of "technical death". I just cant seem to get on board. Origin and the like just don't do it for me. I caught the Suffocation show a while back just to reminisce but would have preferred something a little toned down. Perhaps I am getting old. Stoner doom sludge and shit like Isis and Agalloch seem to appeal to me. I should have drove the 5 hours to see Agalloch. I was saving it for Weedeater and Zoroaster who wound up canceling the show. The next chance I had to see Zoroaster was the same 5 hour drive with The Sword and Kylesa but right after back 2 back weeknights with Nashville Pussy which was O.K. and Primus which was pretty bitchin. Zoroaster is an excellent live band if anyone digs a nice stoner groove.

well, I've known about them since they started since their singer is a friend of mine, but they're still new and most people aren't aware of them... but if you were familiar with The Accursed you'll remember the vocalist Jon Helme... I'm very happy to share with you all: Sauriel

When I first heard The Sword I didn't really like them but after more listens I've really gotten in to them. I really liked Monster Magnet back in the day so I guess it's not that surprising.

I need to listen to it more. The music is very progressive and got the CD for a good price. I know Melissa auf der Maur did some stuff with em' as I am a huge Danzig fan hence why I knew as he did a track with her. Less metal of course http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQCzuB-cMRs

When I first heard The Sword I didn't really like them but after more listens I've really gotten in to them. I really liked Monster Magnet back in the day so I guess it's not that surprising.[/quote]

I would have liked seeing them again. We saw them at Austin City Limits fest last year. The outdoor stage in my opinion does no one justice. I don't knock people for smoking weed but I cant risk being around it (fucking job) and it was a smoke fest the whole time so we just kept moving around. I have listened to them since the debut. I am pretty easy to please though. Stoner sludge (Black Sabbath revival) aint too technical but it sure is entertaining, wish I could still get stoned. Another band from Austin I like is The Black Angels, "drone".\

    I like it.

What's the connection between the sword and MM? I checked one of their bios (allmusic.com) but saw nothing

No actual connection per se but their latest album (Warp Riders), has a spinny, space rock, stoner feel that reminded me of MM on the first couple of listens.

The last two opening bands Ive seen that I wasnt familiar with that i really liked are Dreaming Dead and Cardiac Arrest.

Dreaming Dead is a thrash/death band with a female lead guitarist/singer, like her almost as much as Angela from Arch Enemy,

    And

Cardiac Arrest is a local death metal band, they kick ass live. Got both their cds but I like em much better live.

EDIT 6/30 - I added links to their myspace pages if anyone wants to check them out.

Yes, that is them. Their second guitairst is also female, you are correct. Im not sure if she is a permananent member, the other 3 are the core of the band, they ahve had some turnover at that other slot. If you get a chance to see them live, you should check them out.
Heres a link to Dreaming Dead's myspace page.

as much as I like hearing new bands, it is so hard to keep up .............. you people introduce me to a band almost everyday that I haven't heard or an old band I just never got around to listening to before.

the internet has done wonders in this aspect for bands and getting their music out there ....... man I wish I would of had the internet when I was in my pre-teens/early teenage years. I had one of the largest record collections then and still missed so many bands do to money and pig headed listening taste.

 :givebeer: THANK YOU ALL for expanding my listening experience :beerhorns: :viking:

I hate sitting thru multiple crap opening bands. The net is good for looking into them before the show to see what time to get there.

Seems like the times I dont do any homework is when I find bands I like out of the openers though (or it is related to my alcohol content, after so many drinks, most bands become The Best Band Ever to me and I end up drinking shots with them.

while I love the ability to get the music easier than when I was a teenager... I feel the difficulty and cost made we older generations more committed fans because we'd made an active investment and effort in finding our music. Now it is so easy that people don't really have that connection and just sorta float through for a year or so and become hipsters.
I also have been watching live music/touring culture die a slow death and smaller and smaller crowds come out while more and more kids forego learning to play instruments to just play guitar hero.
I still feel that any metalhead that DOESN'T go to shows/concerts is halfassed... and I think the internet age has drastically lead to increased halfassedness </rant>

There was a certain adventure and adrenaline rush involved in buying an album just because you liked the cover and it was pot luck when you listened to it. You could usually tell what genre it was so it wasnt a complete blind gamble.
