My Dying Bride - again, a new kind of approach to metal for me
Primordial - Alan has to be the most intense performer in metal, both on stage and on albums
Within Temptation - Enter was easy to get into and the albums after that opened my ears to the more pop side of metal
Carcass - I've always preferred Carcass and similar, more metal grind bands over the hc or punk influenced bands like Napalm Death
Bathory - this is viking metal, forget about the cheesy, polished type (Amon Amarth and the likes)
Therion - from Theli to Secret of the Runes, this is how symphonic metal should be done - not too fond of the newer albums

I realized last weekend that my list should most definitely have The Cardigans on it. Damn, I love them. :beerwink:

Just found this thread, and since we all love lists, I'll comment.

10 bands I could not live without:

1 - Les Luhtiers (Argentinian comedians, simply the band that has had more influence in my life).
    2 - Pink Floyd
    3 - Blind Guardian
    4 - Iron Maiden
    5 - Helloween
    6 - Led Zeppelin

I'm having way too much trouble picking (and ordering) the rest of the bands among the folk and death genres, but at this moment they'd be:

    - Turisas
    - Orphaned Land
    - Eluveitie
    - Amon Amarth
    - Anthrax
    - Diablo Swing Orchestra

    But, of course, this varies...

Yep, PoS is amazing and Undertow from Remedy Lane is a great song (and video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja5wA4s8tQU except for those somewhat goofy (imo) computer generated figures - Daniel is just so dramatic in this video - love *that*) As far as my absolute favorite song by PoS - that would be Iter Impius from Be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj54HJkG1rM - but I think I've posted that song so many times and in so many contexts here  , thought I'd put my second favorite from Be on this thread - Imago. I think Iter Impius is one of the best, if not the best song to showcase what an incredibly strong and expressive voice Gildenlow has (especially starting around 5:15)

And I am now reminded of this thread from summer of 2010 :P
    viewtopic.php?f=3&t=490&hilit=bands+must+see+before+you+die

It was fun for me to read that thread again since I've seen Rammstein twice (May 2011 & May 2012) since that initial post. Those were so such great shows (particularly the second one, since that was more of a "greatest hits" kind of show, plus I was very close on the floor which was a more exciting experience in some ways than being in the balcony for the first).

So, that leaves PoS as the band I still "must see." :P May have to take another trip to Europe for that - what a great excuse to go back! :D

So you were a PoS fan Remedy Lane and before? Kinda surprises me - doesn't seem so much like your kinda band. :P I know there are quite a few people who prefer their earlier stuff as well. I truly love their complete discography - each album to me has greatness to it - albeit in perhaps different ways. Gildenlow is amazing to me in that (to me) he is one of the great musical chameleons - and I consider that a very positive thing. Not only in the music itself, but in his ability to transform himself as a performer in and over his long career. (I'm basing this on watching lots of live gig videos, as well as the "officlal" videos like the whole Be concert and official videos....there are just so many great songs (and I know I'm leaving TONS out) - I could really post every song :ugeek: But here are just a few I've rewatched and/or listened to in the past hour in addition to others already mentioned.... :D

Just because a dude is obsessed w/ Slayer doesn't mean he's not into Prog. Dream Theater was in my Top 10 List! I pretty much listen to it all aside from cheese power metal and over the top black/death metal. I mostly have an aversion to Opeth too (LOVE Katatonia)

PoS make two top 10's for me:

    2000
    1. Nevermore - Dead Heart In A Dead World
    2. Pain of Salvation - Perfect Element Pt. 1
    3. Shadows Fall - Of One Blood
    4. Lamb of God - New American Gospel
    5. In Flames - Clayman
    6. The Gathering - If Then Else
    7. Darkest Hour - Mark of The Judas
    8. Nighwish - Wishmaster
    9. Iron Maiden - Brave New World
    10. Sentenced - Crimson

    2002
    1. Killswitch Engage - Alive Or Just Breathing
    2. Shadows Fall - The Art of Balance
    3. Dark Tranquillity - Damage Done
    4. Mastodon - Remission
    5. Soilwork - Natural Born Chaos
    6. Nightwish - Century Child
    7. Sentenced - Cold White Light
    8. Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane
    9. Paradise Lost - Symbol of Life
    10. Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

That song Linoleum essentially make me stop listening to the band forever. They aren't even on my radar anymore. That shit is fucking horrific to me. What the hell is that?

Oh, I know....re: your Slayer comment....and I know you're a Dream Theater fan which is cool. I was just joshing with you a bit. :P ;) And I actually love the fact that you're obsessed with Slayer, as well as being very opinionated. Forum member ArlequinA and I both said on the Bridge forum recently that we love "passionate" people - in my view meaning people who have strong emotions, likes (even to the point of being obsessive :P ), interests and so on...in short, people who are enthusiastic and lively...about life! I love that. I've always tried to surround myself with as many people like that as possible. I just really love that kind of enthusiastic energy. :D

Yet....I must disagree with your comment about the Linoleum song - I think it's great - what's not to like? :P (ok, forget I asked that :P )

And THANKS to those who posted links - I may not always comment directly, but I am listening to all of them.

The problem w/ Lineoleum is that it's clearly marketed to chicks (AKA not me) and sounds nothing like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB8MbuV2XWA

You can't fuck w/ 3:45 on. He's not wearing eyeliner trying to "rock it" like Dave Grohl.

You were at Katatonia / Paradise Lost in Chicago right? I think I saw you.

I like this post. :P Don't really agree with you on the "marketed to chicks" comment, though. I think of Linoleum simply as a really great "hard rock" song, and I assume that Daniel (being the creative and chameleon-like musician/performer that he is) wanted to change things up a bit and try on a bit of the "sexy rock star" schtick for size. But, then again, I don't even know if most "chicks" would even find him "sexy" in that video or not. (?) I wager some might think he's a bit too sweaty and crazed & angry looking/sounding (in parts) to be considered sexy. Maybe I should start a poll on this most important subject. :P Or better yet, maybe it would be a good topic ("chick marketing," sexy rock/metal stars and such) for further discussion in this long-dead thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1740&hilit=Gender+metal

Regardless, I think the song Linoleum (sans video visuals) stands strong as a great rockin' tune on its own merits - but that's just my opinion and I'm sticking to it. ;) And for those who haven't seen it - here's the link again. :D http://youtu.be/sGbgITz_KVY

And lol on the Dave Grohl comment. Plus that is yet another great song that you linked from another great PoS album. And yes - I was at that Chicago gig of Katatonia, PL, and DT. You were there? Have you been a fellow Chicagolander all this time and I didn't know it? Or were you just here visiting?

I'm from Cincinnati. I drive to Chicago for important concerts (to me) that come nowhere closer. Have done Meshuggah / Baroness and Katatonina / Paradise Lost recently. Maybe head there yearly.

You can take the sexy poll yourself. You would be ALL OVER HIM. Dudes don't put on eyeliner to NOT get chicks. Trust me.

Oh, I see. Cool you make the drive for shows that are important to you. I've seen Bentz! from the forum & wife, as well as Disco who have driven in from Detroit area for Chicago gigs.

Ok, I lost track....what are we talking about? Did Gildenlow go the "chick appeal" route with the song/video Linoleum? Do guys wear eyeliner to attract chicks? Should I start a poll? Is Gildenlow sexy? Maybe we went a bit adrift from the main topic of favorite bands. ;) :P

If the main reason you don't care for PoS since Remedy Lane is because you don't like the *music* of the last four albums, I get *that* - but I'm just not buying the chick appeal/eyeliner comments (in connection to the Linoleum video in particular) But, I have a hunch this is a topic I don't desire to "split hairs" with you on. Suffice it to say, in *my* view, Gildenlow is an incrediblly talented singer/songwriter/performer/multi-instrumentalist (one of my top four "Renaissance musicians" I discussed in the thread of that title). Oh, and he *also* happens to be a very good looking man....no doubt about that. :P I consider that fact to be like extra special "icing" on an already extremely delicious cake. Certainly not necessary, but a special, tasty bonus. :D

    I didn't drive, I took the train.

And as for Glidenlow I agree, he is a good songwriter. In fact he's so good after hearing POS, it makes want to quit playing music all together.

Well, I hope you're kidding in the second sentence. ;) Ok, a few more PoS links and then I'm done obsessing over Gildenlow's genius, voice, and beauty (for at least a few days ;) ). (plus tons to do and I'm off doing them!! )

** I like what a youtube user comment says about this song....well put: "How the hell could any other songwriter express the true human nature (when it comes to sex, love and passion issues)in a more faithful, and at the same time, original and naked way??? Gildenlow, keep the good work on!!!"

This is extremely tough. In no particular order:

    Metallica
    Slayer
    Cannibal Corpse
    Rush
    Talking Heads
    Iron Maiden
    Black Sabbath
    King Crimson
    Judas Priest
    Alice In Chains

Then there are about 25 more.....

I really enjoyed looking at all of your favs.
10 bands I could not live with out? No there are none.
I like well over a hundred bands, if you took my top 10 away there would still be over a hundred that I like.
Sure I have favorites but I figured it out once if I listened to every metal album I have back to back
without sleep time it would still be more than a year.
Off the top of my head quick here are some of my favs
    Black Sabbath
    Overkill
    Testament
    Judas Priest
    Kiss
    Carcass
    Earhtride
    Sciisorfight
    Motorhead
    Armroed Saint
and i could go on and on.......... :shred:
