    by last_candle » Mon Nov 05, 2012 4:18 pm

hmm, maybe "new projects" like Gamma Ray, Wintersun or Avantasia shouldn't could - but what the heck! we have a new list that's all that counts, isn't it? ;)

    In no particular order...

    Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
    Eluveitie - Spirit
    Turisas - Battle Metal
    Ensiferum - Ensiferum
    Rhapsody - Legendary Tales
Diablo Swing Orchestra - The Butcher's Ballroom
Avantasia - The Metal Opera pt I
    Metallica - Kill 'em All
Amon Amarth - Once Sent From the Golden Hall
Freedom Call - Stairway to Fairyland

(picked almost randomly, based on which debut albums I could think of first, not counting EPs, of course).
    70K 2013 SURVIVOR (Cabin 2120)
    70K 2014 SURVIVOR (Cabin 2565)

    In perpetual post-cruise depression/pre-cruise anxiety.

Doing my best to be there for 2015.

This dude made a huge list of the best debut albums that he's heard [1521 entries]. It's skewed towards power metal for sure, but it's a cool list.

Cool idea. I would have to put a lot of thought in to come up with an actual list of my favourites so I'll just name some off the top of my head. Big fan of a couple of the previous ones though.

    Sinbreed - When Worlds Collide
    Helloween - Walls Of Jericho
    Black Sabbath - S/T
Ne Obliviscaris - Portal Of I
Arch/Matheos - Sympathetic Resonance (does this count? They did an EP together under a different name and were original members of Fates Warning)
    Dream Evil - Dragon Slayer
    Kiuas - Spirit Of Ukko
Cain's Offering - Gather The Faithful
    Kalmah - Swamplord
Holy Grail - Crisis In Eutopia

    I'll stop there

Oh, boy, I have to go off the top of my head too less I'll end up confusing myself.

I'm going to try to keep "supergroup" stuff like Avantasia, Aina, and Cain's Offering away. Otherwise, those are definitely in my top 5.

I really can't put these in order beyond #1. #2-8 are sooooooo close depending on the day and my mood.

    1. Twilightning -- Delirium Veil
    2. Ensiferum -- Ensiferum
    3. Turisas -- Battle Metal
    4. Kiuas -- The Spirit of Ukko
    5. Elvenking -- Heathenreel
    6. Svartsot -- Ravnenes Saga
    7. Tyr -- How Far To Asgard (I actually really do like Pol Arni's voice on this album, 'Ormurin Langi' is friggin' beautiful)
    8. Korpiklaani -- Spirit of the Forest
    9. Sonata Arctica -- Ecliptica
    10. Dragonforce -- Valley of the Damned

Ahhhh... the old school, no title creativity at all (or at least they used them all for the songs not for the album title   )

that's a tough one, usually my fav bands had totally shitty beginnings, which I do not like that much as their later achievements (3rd album syndrome - either genius or utter crap).

I can only squeeze theeze as something truly attention catching at first kick (we rule out demos and EP):

    Down - Nola
    Bloodbath - Ressurection Through Carnage
    Black Dahlia Murder - Unhallowed
    Decapitated - Nihility
    Codeon - Source
Allegaeon - Fragments of Form and Function
    Brother Von Doom - Relentless
    Kalmah - Swamplord
The Agonist - Once Only Imagined
Legion Of The Damned - Sons Of The Jackal
Wishlist BTH2014: Aeon, Beneath the Massacre, Black Dahlia Murder, Bloodbath, Bolt Thrower, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Codeon, Death To All, Decapitated, Deicide, Gorod, Hour of Penance, Morbid Angel, Nile, Oral Fistfuck, Slayer, Suicidal Angels, Vader

Power metal bands just come out the gates strong and fade miserably over time.

That's because the genre hasn't evolved in 20+ years and provides little to no breathing room. Bands can't really recreate much in a incredibly stagnating genre.

    That's a bit of a ridiculous statement.

Power metal subgenres genres that have evolved greatly over the last 20 years:
    1. Progressive power metal (ie; Pagan's mind, Angra, Wuthering Heights, Symphony X)
    2. Symphonic power metal (With actual orchestrations..)
    3. Power-folk metal (think elvenking's adaptation of skyclad-esque folk metal and adding the power twist)
    4. Modern, more aggressive power metal (that has taken a step away from traditional metal, such as Kiuas)
    5. Oriental power metal (this is fringe power metal stuff.. think Myrath, Arkan etc.)
    etc.

Great list (except for 6, 7, & 8 that I'm not familiar with). Without doubt, the Van Halen debut was killer - one of the very best "hard" rock albums of that decade. I know I've posted links to songs from that album, and a few younger folks who had not heard it before, enjoyed it as I recall. I'd love for more people who still haven't heard it, to listen, and comment on what they think....it's one of those that has held up really well over time. The Stone Roses & Ghost debuts are two of my BIG favorites as well.

This is a hard list question because my brain started scanning over bands & artists I've really enjoyed over the decades, thought about (and in some cases had to look up) what their first album was, and then....well, it was a lot to think about. And in many cases, I feel that many bands didn't really hit their stride until at least 2 or more albums into their discography, so I wouldn't include their debuts in such a list.

This is going to seem really random (genre, date, etc.) and is nowhere near complete, but here are a few that I love that haven't been mentioned.

Blind Faith: Blind Faith (their only album)
    Boston: Boston
    Godflesh: Streetcleaner
    Kvelertak: Kvelertak
The Black Keys: The Big Come Up (brilliant!! Just started listening to this band recently)
    The Pretenders: The Pretenders
    Talking Heads: Talking Heads 77
    U2: Boy
    Ulver: Bergtatt
    Wardruna: Runaljod Gap var Ginnunga

    Counterpoint -- Twilightning.

Wrote one of the best power metal albums of all-time (and my #1 debut album ever) and then wrote the WORST album(s) ever.

    Truth with this one.

'Delirium veil' was a brilliant album for that style of power metal, and everything since has been a huge letdown. Swinelords? What the fuck.

However, you get bands like Blind Guardian, that start out a little rough, while they're still finding their footing, and then peak a few albums later with their brilliant 'Imaginations from the Other Side'.

For me, the best examples of this are Sonata Arctica and, to a (much) lesser extent, Hammerfall.

Most of the power metal albums that came out this year were kinda letdowns though. Although most of those bands I would still LOVE to see live. There's lots of new stuff popping up that's awesome though like Sinbreed, Orden Ogan, etc.

I think you're making up subgenres, but whatever. You can take the same thing I said about Power Metal and apply it almost every subgenre of metal. It's really all about liking what you like. Just bustin' balls really.

Whether one were to call it a subgenre (subsubgenre?) or style, the point still stands. Crossover and innovation is happening in all walks of metal. I only pointed out several examples of styles within power metal because you said it was stagnant and unchanging.

Oh, my bad about Meshuggah - don't think I responded to your Meshuggah link on fb a while back (I forget, what song was it? )
I listened to 3 different songs that came up prominently on youtube on my phone for Meshuggah - Bleed, New Millennium Cyanide Christ, & Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave it Motion - btw, just listened to not be distracted by the visuals. So, I know these guys have like 7 albums or something, right? so it would be unfair to judge the band on just those three I know - but have to say those three didn't do much for me - in other words, no automatic ZING! "I *really* like this!!" (Sayeth my brain) Not *bad* really, just not my thing I guess. The first song Bleed seemed relentlessly repetitive. That in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing in my book (one of my favorite "relentlessly repetitive" and awesome songs being Godflesh's Pulp http://youtu.be/HJEmNyazJFo ), but perhaps mixed with the guy's type of vocal style is the turn-off, to my brain anyway. Again, it's not a matter of "harsh" vocals being the problem, but the type. Some styles I really like, others not so much. Going back to the Godflesh link above, I could listen to Justin Broderick's voice all day. :P (and haha - one that is most likely not pleasant at all to most people. ;) )

Maybe you could suggest some other Meshuggah songs if you're real familiar with them.
