We discussed this somewhere fairly recently but I can't remember where

    Best of the year:
    1. Beyond the Bridge - The Old Man and the Spirit
    2. Ne Obliviscaris - The Portal of I
    3. Borknagar - Urd

    Most disappointing of the year:
    1. Circus Maximus - Nine
    2. Sabaton - Carolus Rex
    3. Wintersun - Time I (Though it's starting to slowly grow on me after seeing them live)
I should get around to updating my signature

My Top 10 For the Year (The first 3 were my standouts, everything elase was a notch below)

1.Testament - Dark Roots. (as far as being my favorite nothing came close for me, two homeruns in a row for Chuck Billy & Company.
    2.Kreator - Phantom Antichrist
    3.Goatwhore -Blood For The Master

    4.Cannibal Corpe - Torture
5.Nile - At The Gate of Sethu
6.Autopsy - All Tomorrows Funerals (might be ranked higher but I lowered its ranking cause not all new & much of the material is compiled from earlier EP releases)
    7.Incantation - Vanquish In Vengeance
    8.Municipal Waste - Fatal Feast
    9.Unleashed - Odalheim
    10.Napalm Death - Utilitarian

I didnt notice til this weeked that Dublin Death Patrol put out a 2nd cd, will have to check that out. Loved their first one, Sid Vicous (Lives) off their first cd is one of my all time favorite songs.

I need to get the new Asphyx cd, keep forgetting to get that one. Havent heard the new Dying Fetus one yet either. Rough year job wise, i miss the days where I had enough free time to check out all the new releases. (Metal Haven the local metal record shop that had all the new releases closing has took away a convenience factor ingetting them to, Damn I miss that place)

Totally forgot about the stinkbomb from Sonata Arctica. Wintersun is being removed from the list and putting Sonata at the top of my most disappointing.

Haha yeah Stones Grow Her Name was BAAAAD. That, Firewind, Kamelot and Grave Digger were my biggest disappointments. Shame on the whole power metal genre! Smaller bands did put out good stuff though like Orden Ogan and Seven Kingdoms

My Top 10 - hard to split the top 3 for a clear "number one":

    MAGNUM - The Thirteenth Day
EPICA - Requiem for the Indifferent
    ELUVEITIE - Helvetios
    KAMELOT - Silverthorn
    DRAGONFORCE - The Power Within
    TOURNIQUET - Antiseptic Bloodbath
    PYTHIA - The Serpents Curse
    XANDRIA - Neverworld's End
    TEN - Heresy and Creed
    ACCEPT - Stalingrad

Disappointing - all have good songs on them, but very uneven:
    ENSIFERUM - Unsung Heroes
    SABATON - Carulus Rex
SONATA ARCTICA - Stones Grow Her Name
    Upcoming Gigs:

Carach Angren - Where The Corpses Sink Forever
    Ea - Ea
The Howling Void - The Womb Beyond The World
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Pandora's Pinata

Andy said initially 60/40 clean to harsh vocals. So we all assumed that meant all the unused songs for the EP next year would be chocked filled with harsh. But I don't think we will be that lucky and he simply misspoke (crossing fingers)

It's not about the vocals to me, the album just doesn't do anything for me, I don't hate it, I just don't care about it much. I'm not even really a fan of harsh vocals so it would make no difference to me if it was all clean, I prefer clean singing anyway. I just assumed the next EP consisted of throw away material from A Map of All Our Failures, so I'd expect the EP to be even worse.

I had done up my list prior to Barge. Almost a physically painful decision to have Candlemass or Devin as number 10 on mine... good grief. And I feel like if I had had more bonding time with Aeon's new album it probably would have snagged a spot. Same for the Winterfylleth album too actually, only listened to it through no more than twice which is shameful because I loved the Mercian Sphere. And have only listened to a few songs off new My Dying Bride so it didn't make the list. Not to mention I still haven't had a chance to listen to the new Destruction album yet. Well, here's my top 20 that I managed to figure out:

    1. Before the Dawn - Phoenix Rising

    2. Unleashed - Odalheim

    3. Be'lakor - Of Breath and Bone

    4. Gojira - L'enfant Sauvage

    5. Kreator - Phantom Antichrist

    6. Moonspell - Alpha Noir

    7. Grave - Endless Procession of Souls

    8. Municipal Waste - Fatal Feast

    9. Ne Obliviscaris - Portal of I

    10. Candlemass - Psalms for the Dead

    11. Devin Townsend - Epicloud

    12. Eluveitie - Helvetios

    13. Enslaved - Riitir

    14. Allagaeon - Formshifter

    15. 3 Inches of Blood - Long Live Heavy Metal

    16. Korpiklaani - Manala

    17. Ex Deo - Caligvla

    18. Evocation - Illusions of Grandeur

    19. Nile - At the Gates of Sethu

    20. Wintersun - Time 1

It actually makes me so mad that Nile and Wintersun are at the bottom of my list since they were both my most anticipated albums of this year.

    2012
    1. Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage
    2. Sylosis - Monolith
    3. Between The Buried and Me - Parallax II
    4. Paradise Lost - Tragic Idol
    5. Meshuggah - Koloss
    6. Eluveitie - Helvetios
    7. Swallow the Sun - Emerald Forest and the Blackbird
    8. Baroness - Yellow and Green
    9. My Dying Bride - A Map of All Our Failures
    10. Testament - Dark Roots of Earth

    Honorable Mention:
    Katatonia - Dead End Kings
    Moonspell - Alpha Noir
    Tiamat - The Scarred People
    Lamb of God - Resolution
Shadows Fall - A Fire In The Sky
Stolen Babies - Naught (could still make top 10 since I just got it)
Epica - Requiem for the Indifferent

    Disappoinment:
    God Forbid - Equilibrium
    Fear Factory - The Industrialist
    Kamelot - Silverthorn

Really REALLY surprised at the lack of Meshuggah mentions. I see that album EVERYWHERE. Also surprised me and Kevin match 2 of the same top 10.

New MDB is a return to Turn Loose the Swans IMO. Love it. Not as much as new Paradise Lost, but very strong comeback album. Especially after Lies I Sire sucked and Line of Deathless Kings wasn't too good either.

Really? I don't see it even nearly in the same league as Turn Loose the Swans. I LOVE Turn Loose the Swans, It's one of my favourite albums, classic MDB. A Map Of All Our Failures just bores me.

It's not in the same league AT ALL. It's a return to that sound to me. It sounds more like that album than anything else IMO.

I disagree with both of you. Sounds like its own album. I wasn't too thrilled at first and I can see how it would bore some people, but it has enough memorable moments.

And the extra songs for the EP in 2013 are not throwaway tracks, Connie. If you actually read my interview with Hamish, you would know that :P

I did read that interview, he said they'd recorded a few extra tracks during the Map Of All Our Failures sessions that they were going to release as a separate EP, and not record new songs for the EP. If you actually remember what Hamish said, you would know that :P

But I do agree though, that it does sound like it's own album and nothing like Turn Loose The Swans.

Not many albums sadly but a couple songs.

Abigail Williams - "Beyond the Veil" off of "Becoming"
Nachtmystium - "Broken Hopes and Borrowed Dreams" off of "Silencing Machine"
Paradise Lost - "Tragic Idol" off of "Tragic Idol"

Moonspell's bonus disk "Omega White" off of "Alpha Noir" was the best complete album for me this year.

Tiamat was okay but prefer their previous CD to it. Weapon was standard, I was expecting more given what I read/heard. Woods of Ypres 4 is great but not 2012 though 5 came out in 2012 so. meh. Got more into it 2012. Need to listen to MDB more to have any input.

I was hoping for more but 2012 hasn't been the best for bands I enjoy. Well 2013 ahead. I look forward to Rotting Christ though I've heard a song and it sounds a lot like "Aealo". I think they were opening the BTH sets with it given the pace.

Hmmm....this a challenging question, because first I had to ask myself what, if any, albums did I buy this past year that were actually released this year? Without checking my iTunes purchasing history, I came up with this short list:

    Dead Can Dance: Anastasis
    Eluveitie: Helvetios
    Enslaved: RIITIIR
Ne Obliviscaris: Portal of I (thanks to Drinkmoxie)
Royal Thunder: Cvi (thanks to Evildan)
Storm Corrosion (Wilson/Akerfeldt) : Storm Corrosion
    Wintersun: Time 1

So, are they "the best?" I dunno, yet I've enjoyed all very much for different reasons. Can't really rank them per se since they are very different from one another genre-wise...although I'm leaning toward the ones by DCD, Enslaved, & Eluveitie as my top three. There are several other 2012 releases I am interested in that I haven't listened to yet....but I'm in no hurry. Rush's Clockwork Angels is a perfect example - if I'd gone to their fall gig I'd have bought it already for sure, but since I decided to skip that tour (since I've seen them many times over the years), thought I'd wait until some dark grey wintery January day and say, "hmmm....this will be a good day to hear the latest Rush album." :D A band like that is like a very old friend - they will always be there. Dead Can Dance, on the other hand, was a different story - never thought I'd get a chance to see them live and then they did that wonderful summertime US tour that featured many wonderful songs from Anastasis (like this one called Opium: http://youtu.be/vZDCOR2a1-E ), so I bought that asap to become familiar with it. Similarly, Wintersun is a very new band to me and since I knew I'd see them with favorite Eluveitie, I needed to prioritize listening to Time 1, as well as the original self-titled recording.

Enslaved I need to listen to more (the album) but that Royal Thunder, some good stuff there when in the mood. Music is too hard to conclude "top" in the last month of the year (though I know it is for shits and giggles). That "Beyond the Veil" song I can do easy given the time with it and it still gives me a trip/chill every time I listen to it. Was the oddity of the year given it came from a band that I was meh of. Makes me believe in "the muse".

Dead Can Dance are a experience much like the way I feel about my #1 song of 2012.

2012 I've been living in the past music-wise (jamming a lot of Doors the last 2 months). Overall I feel the year has been a bust in the type of metal I like and have spent more time playing catch up on older metal releases and non-metal. I am happy to welcome 2013 cause aside from a couple highlights, this year wasn't too hot overall. Hail the future! :beerwink: :headbanger: AND MORE BTHs!!! :bmhorns:

Do I see a consensus around Helvetios? :viking: :viking: :viking: :viking:
    70K 2013 SURVIVOR (Cabin 2120)
    70K 2014 SURVIVOR (Cabin 2565)

    In perpetual post-cruise depression/pre-cruise anxiety.

Doing my best to be there for 2015.
