    Progressive Nation at Sea 2014

    by Laura » Tue Jul 30, 2013 7:37 pm

Oh man - I'd love to do this one (even though it's kinda doubtful I'll make it) - I know this may have little appeal to many here, but there are several favorite bands/artists of mine in the line-up - in particular Pain of Salvation, Transatlantic, The Flower Kings, Spock's Beard, Riverside, Jon Anderson & Bigelf.
    http://www.progressivenationatsea.com/

    http://www.blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?m ... mID=193147
InsideOut Music has teamed up with Mike Portnoy, Derek Sherinian and Sixthman to bring Progressive Nation to the high seas in 2014!

The inaugural sailing will take place February 18-22, 2014 on the luxurious Norwegian Pearl heading from Miami to Great Stirrup Cay and Freeport, Bahamas.

This music festival at sea gives you an experience that a land festival just can't match.

In addition to four days in the beautiful Caribbean and all the amenities of a cruise ship; you will enjoy music from morning until night with over 40 shows on multiple stages, along with activities, question-and-answer sessions, panels and workshops from your favorite artists.

    Lineup:

    TRANSATLANTIC
    PORTNOY SHEEHAN MACALPINE SHERINIAN
    JON ANDERSON
    KING'S X
    SPOCK'S BEARD
    THE FLOWER KINGS
    PAIN OF SALVATION
    RIVERSIDE
    TONY HARNELL & BUMBLEFOOT
    BIGELF
    BEARDFISH
    THE DEAR HUNTER
    JOLLY
    NEXT TO NONE

Portnoy says: "In 2008 and 2009, I created a touring package called Progressive Nation and with DREAM THEATER headlining. We did three full tours (two in North America and one in Europe) that showcased a variety of bands that embraced the spirit and musicality of progressive music.

"Well, after a five-year hiatus, I have decided to resurrect Progressive Nation and this time we are taking it to the seas! But rather than a four-band bill like previous Progressive Nation tours, we have expanded the bill to over a dozen of today's greatest progressive bands, musicians and artists (and there may be one or two more still to be confirmed).

"Myself and my former DREAM THEATER bandmate Derek Sherinian have teamed up with Sixthman (who have done incredibly successful cruises with Kid Rock, LYNYRD SKYNYRD and the annual Kiss Cruise, to name a few), as well as our friends at InsideOut Music, and look forward to a very successful inaugural launch of Progressive Nation At Sea February 18th thru 22nd, 2014.

"We are so excited to take part in this historic maiden voyage and look forward to sharing this one-of-a-kind event with fans from all around the world!"

This music festival at sea gives music fans an experience that a land festival just can't match. In addition to four days in the beautiful Caribbean, guest will have the opportunity to see their favorite musical heroes perform numerous sets around the many stages set around Norwegian Pearl. And when guests are not attending a performance, a variety of activities hosted by the artists will fill the day.

Progressive Nation At Sea begins at $700 per person plus taxes and fees. Prices include entertainment, meals, and access to Norwegian Pearl's outstanding amenities, including outdoor pool, hot tubs, rock climbing wall, and fitness center.

With 15 decks of fun, Norwegian Pearl offers guests access to 13 bars and lounges, 19 dining experiences, one outdoor pool, four hot tubs, and spa treatments to help forget about the world left behind. Onboard concerts aren't the only things that rock on Norwegian Pearl — passengers looking for more activities can visit the outdoor climbing wall, bowl a few frames at the onboard lanes, or tempt lady luck at The Pearl Club Casino. Progressive Nation cruisers will also have the opportunity to explore the sandy beaches of Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas, their very own private island getaway. A host of beachside activities and games, the gigantic "Hippo" water slide, and access to food and beverage service will make the stay on Great Stirrup Cay an unforgettable experience.

That's pretty awesome. I won't be going but I wonder if some of the other tour festivals will be getting their own cruises. Gigantour, Summer Slaughter etc.

Don't think I remember you mentioning King's X here before Dallas. I've been meaning to check them out for ages because I've heard many others speak of them very favorablly. I'm embarrassed to say that I pretty much missed them altogether when they opened for Porcupine Tree on 9/22/09 http://chicago.ohmyrockness.com/showdet ... owid=34445 I've been a huge PT fan for years and was at that gig, but got to the venue right when King's X was finishing their set. People told me that it was really great - but I was not familiar with them before the gig, and therefore didn't make a point to get there early. Regardless, it would be cool to see them on this Prog Nation at Sea cruise.

    Which....speaking of....
I've decided I really want to do this cruise....not 100% sure at this moment I'm going to be able to swing it (more about 80%), but I'm gonna try! I did the pre-registration thing on the fest site today...and now I'll see what I can figure out in the next couple of weeks re the details - what I estimate it will cost, flights, etc.

As I said in an earlier post, I realize that this cruise and the line-up most likely has little or no appeal to many here. Someone on one of the 70K facebook groups said they had never even heard of any of the artists/bands on the line-up. For me - these artists/groups alone are sealing the deal for me:

PAIN OF SALVATION Yeah - many of you know of my obsession with PoS/Daniel Gildenlow (one of my top 10 fave bands ever) :P - was so thrilled to see them for the first time this past May.

Jon Anderson - former lead singer of Yes (one of my top 10 fave bands ever) and solo artist - would love to know what he'd perform on this cruise

Riverside - prog greats from Poland and big fave of mine - like PoS, saw them for the first time this past May and loved their gig

Spock's Beard - huge fan of this band for many years - have all their recordings, yet have never seen them live

Flower Kings - prog greats from Sweden - have all of their recordings and saw them live just once several years ago

Transatlantic - awesome prog supergroup featuring Roine Stolt (Flower Kings), Mike Portnoy, Pete Trewavas (Marillion), Neal Morse (Spock's Beard), and Daniel Gildenlow (PoS)

Bigelf - saw this group open for Dream Theater on the Progressive Nation tour several years ago - really dug their gig and met them all afterwards - cool guys

King's X - here is my chance to see this band who I know so many love and who I missed open for Porcupine Tree as mentioned above...and no doubt, the others on the line-up will be cool to check out as well...apparently others will be added as well (but I'm more than satisfied with the line-up as it is)

I checked out the cruise ship Norwegian Pearl - it is one of the NCL's (Norwegian Cruise Line) fleet. I took an NCL cruise years ago and it is an excellent cruise line. http://www.ncl.com/cruise-ship/pearl/overview

gaaaah....I want to do this! This is one of those things that I'm just gonna make happen. :P

I figured you would chime in here at some point Kay since I remember you mentioning liking some of these bands. I don't know too many people outside of the prog rock community who are familiar with someone like Neal Morse, Riverside & Spock's Beard (for example) - gosh - I'd love to hear Neal Morse sing live!! (Never seen him solo, nor with Spock's Beard or Transatlantic). What a voice!! One of my favorites for sure. I was watching some videos of Transatlantic live at Shepherd's Bush (from 2010 I believe) last night & wow! How great they all are together!!

I'm partly not surprised you wouldn't be interested in this cruise though. I suspect this will be an older (I'm gonna guess a lot of age 40+ men :P ), waaay more mellow shindig than 70K. Haha, as a person in my low 50s, I'll fit right in  - more so than 70K perhaps although I think I've got at least a few good headbanging/party all night/wild & crazy metal fests left in me.

If this had some younger more aggressive prog like BtBAM, Protest the Hero, Tesseract, The Ocean and other stuff like Cynic, Devin Townsend, Fates Warning, Arch Matheos, Orphaned Land, new version of Queensryche etc..... I would absolutely go to this. This is too old man fest for me. (not that I'm young)

GAH I'M SO DISAPPOINTED WE WON'T SEE THE ONES I'VE HIGHLIGHTED ON 70K. Surely there are contracts with the bands stating they can't play any competing festivals, especially one that precedes this one by a few weeks.

Me = Sad. 5 wishlist bands, scratched off in the bad way

Is that a common thing to have a no competition clause in a contract? I feel like bands play competing festivals all the time. At least we now know Devin is open to playing on a ship. If there's no legal reason to block him from 70K I think Andy should make a big push to get him on since he'll only need one trip to play both cruises.

Wow Jake - that's too bad for ya. May not be good for me either though (since this is a DREAM line-up) because I'm not 100% I can make this happen - gonna try my darndest though! Devin is cool too, although I'm not the huge Devin fan I know many here are. Booking commences soon - I need to get on the stick PRONTO and figure this shit out! :P

    Ryan,
For specific instances such as this, since this is both an expensive and a 'niche' type of show, the promoters will often put a clause in the contract that establishes a performance radius. In this case, that would likely state that any other cruise would be a 'no-no' for anyone currently signed on to this one. In instances like local festivals in Calgary, Those who play Calgary metal fest don't play noctis, and vice-versa. It works out better for the promoters since they can ensure a certain limited but unique draw for each of their bands. C'est la vie!
Of course, this is just speculation on my part that the bands on this one won't be on 70k and that such a performance radius clause even exists for these events. I would be very surprised if any of the bands on prognation cruise were to show up, but you never know; there could be little enough crossover between the two cruises to make it possible! I would be very, very happy if any of the bands I highlighted were to be able to make it. Devin especially, cause he's way too cool of a dude.

    Laura,
For Devin stuff, I really recommend checking out the 'Earth Day' album. That's what secured me as a big fan after Ziltoid drew me in. That's awesome that this lineup is so good for you! Hopefully you can make it happen!
Haken is pretty wicked. Awesome musicianship and some cool versatility between heavy and light.

Addding Devin Townsend, Animals as Leaders and The Safety Fire makes this cruise WAY younger. I might go on this now. Damn.

Jake, if it makes you feel any better I actually really didn't like Animals As Leaders live on friday. They play really really tight and use AxeFX so it didn't really sound human. I was a little bit of a ways back so I couldnt really see everything that he was doing so I was kinda just thinking "I can listen to the album at home". I didn't even stay til the end of the set.

Fair enough man! Certain venues may be more conducive for the performance factor.. when I saw them twice at NAMM in LA (with the mars volta dude on sax for one set), they blew me away. When they played at Republik with BTBAM a couple years back I was a little more 'meh' on their performance.

Riverside is pretty low energy... but that still leaves Devin, Haken, and PoS as wishlist bands! At least I've seen devin 5 times haha. Never seen Haken or PoS.

I understand Devin Townsend doing this cruise. It appears to be co-sponsored by his current label (Inside Out). Same with some 9/10 of the other bands. I'm waiting for the addition of Geoff Tate solo!

I have seen a handful of the bands on this cruise live in the past. The only ones I would really want to see again are Devin Townsend, King's X & Riverside. I don't think Riverside would fit 70K though. I've seen Devin Townsend 6 times (Devin Townsend Project, Devin Townsend Band), King's X 11 times & Riverside once.

Overall, the current lineup of the prog cruise does not have a lot of interest for me. For those that go, enjoy.

Jake - Riverside may be somewhat more "low key" (which is definitely not a negative in my view) - but man are they amazing to me....especially after seeing them in a small club last May. The adjective that comes to my mind is luscious - a favorite adjective of mine lately to describe anything that is (to use some dictionary definitions :P ) - richly satisfying to the senses or the mind; sensual. Mariusz's voice is unique & very special I think - wonderful layers of icing on an already beautiful cake (ha). I was listening to this recent EP this morning - Memories in My Head: http://youtu.be/ghh4Xc2OPGs - delectable! :P

Definitely not going this year, but and "Inside/Out" label cruise definitely has my attention. Might choose this one next year, unless UMC changes their no announcement policy. :D

So basically...this is a Dream Theatre cruise without Dream Theatre? :D I remember saying something about them being big enough to have their cruise. Hopefully they play this one next year? I would seriously consider that.

Kinda surprised in a way that Steven Wilson and/or Mikael Akerfeldt haven't glommed onto this thing yet in some way, shape or form...seems like the perfect venue/milieu for them... I'm thinking not in terms of their work with Porcupine Tree & Opeth respectively (although that would be TOTALLY AMAZING since they are two of my top 10 fave bands ever - but, ha - perhaps having PT AND Opeth would be TOO much to ask for :P ), but rather Steven's solo work, as well as their recent joint venture Storm Corrosion. In my view, both men have an extremely dedicated fan base and would be a HUGE draw for many (especially the age 40+ in the case of Wilson) prog fans. And if they wanted to draw in even more really old school prog folk (as in guys in their 60s, adding to people like Anderson & Belew already on the bill), they could throw in people like Steve Howe, Steve Hackett, Robert Fripp, Allan Parsons (who engineered Wilson's latest brilliant The Raven That Refused to Sing btw  ), any member or incarnation of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Gentle Giant, among so many others. Man - the possibilities for cool connections between all these folks is mind blowing to me....after all, most (if not all) of the people on the bill so far already either know each other well, have toured together, and/or have jammed together at one time or another.

And who knows? Maybe they'll still throw in a few more "younger" acts like TesseracT. OMG - I just imagined Jon Anderson & Ashe (of TesseracT) sharing the stage and hearing both their amazing voices at the same time.  Haha...ok, I'm pipe-dreaming now :smoking: - but, damn - like I said - endless possibilities for sheer awesomeness with the line-up as it is.

I think the weight of Mikael's pretentiousness would sink the boat  Actually, I think I saw Opeth at a Progressive Nation tour with Dream Theater years ago haha.

I wouldnt mind seeing some of the bands, but I just dont think I can take a multi-day prog cruise. Honestly, a lot of the prog fans are annoying enough so id be willing to bet the people arent as fun haha. If they snag Arena performing Pepper's Ghost, id be very very very annoyed.

So, I decided to book this cruise - as far as prog line-ups go, it really couldn't be much better than the current line-up... with the possible exception of adding Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree/Storm Corrosion and/or Akerfeldt/Opeth/Storm Corrosion in any incarnation.... although I've seen them each several times, so I'm not gonna whine by any means if they don't get added. This is pretty much a prog dream line-up for me so I'm seizing the day - haha. Any other adds at this point would be extra "gravy." And who knows if this is going to be an annual thing or not. Even if it was, this would probably be the only one I'd do.

Aaaaanyway.... :P For any others here remotely interested in this thing...here's a part of a recent email I got from them once I pre-registered:
Everyone registered by August 21st will receive an email with pre-sale information, including your Earliest Booking Time, on August 22nd, and will be able to book as early as August 26th. Guests who register late will receive their pre-sale and booking information on or around August 28th.
Note that Earliest Booking Times will be spread throughout several days so that we may provide you the best possible guest service experience as you make your reservation.

The cabin prices & payment options are very good I think:
For example, $700 for cheapest double with $225 added for fees. Also, no fee charged for those travelling alone (although booking a double is required which is fine with me - I only did doubles on both 70Ks which I prefer).
    http://www.progressivenationatsea.com/prices/
    http://www.progressivenationatsea.com/p ... t-options/

I planned on visiting my folks down in Florida in February like I do every winter (they live there Jan-April), so I'm going to be flying down there already anyway. So, it's looking like a win-win altogether. Going on this will negate any other solo trips for me next year including if a Barge to Hell 2 happens - but I don't feel like waiting around for that and the likely announcement drama at this point.

Since I've been on 2 70Ks - it will be fun to compare the two (besides the obvious music focus difference). For one, no doubt this will be on average an older crowd - but, ha - that's ok since I'm one of them. ;) I'll be sure to write up a lengthy review/comparison when I get back!

^^^ wow - didn't expect that! Fantastic additions.

ADDITIONAL ARTISTS ADDED TO PROGRESSIVE NATION AT SEA 2014!
    Friday August 23, 2013
We're excited that Anathema and Anneke van Giersbergen will be joining us aboard Progressive Nation at Sea 2014! We still have a few more Prog artists up our sleeve, so stay tuned for further additions to the lineup!

They also just announced this which is quite amazing to me:

WITNESS PROG HISTORY ON THE FINAL NIGHT OF PROGRESSIVE NATION AT SEA!
    Friday August 23, 2013
Jon Anderson will take the stage with Transatlantic to perform YES classics on the final night of Progressive Nation at Sea 2014! It will be an encore you don't want to miss!

I was talking about the Allman Brothers gig with my sister last night, as well as several other classic rock gigs I've attended in the past few years - so many of these guys are in their mid-late 60s now and although I could be wrong of course - they may not perform (or be around for that matter) for many more years. Seeing someone like Jon Anderson (who will be 69 in October and someone whose music I've loved since I was nine years old :P ) on this ship will be like a symbolic (if not an actual) "last hurrah" for me seeing Yes music performed live. (my first time seeing Yes was the night after my high school graduation at Chicago's International Ampitheater in June 1979)

Looks like Andy should change his no announcement policy in the future. Its sounding like 70k 2015 will have some seriously legitimate competetion. This prog one is so much cheaper and with bands like Anethema (whom I really don't care for), Devin Townsend, Transatlantic, and Pain of Salvation, this cruise is starting to tap into UMC territory. The fact that its considerably cheaper is very liekly to snag more people if this first one is successful, and I'm damn sure it will be. This cruise looks awesome, but like someone said its a bit too old man for me to spend that kind of money on, but I'm sure as this thing progresses (pun not intended) that they will continue to delve into 70k territory and steal some customers. Considering UMCs current no announcement policy I am seriously all for that.

Booked! Spoke to a very nice woman who handled my reservation today. I went the "independent traveler" route - seemed the easiest since I wanted to book asap and I didn't want to get involved with contacting potential people & coordinating cabinmate stuff...plus there is no extra charge for doing so (doesn't UMC charge $100?). Doing it that way requires that you book a double which is what I would do anyway even if I was going with people I know. The way it works is that my double cabin (picked it from the deck plan while on the phone) is all mine until they place some other female passenger with me (they won't mix genders). Price for my share is $700 plus $225 for the fees for a total of $925. Paid $150 deposit today which is non-refundable which leaves $775 to pay - no sweat (I've been working a ton of time and a half overtime since March). They handle gratuities differently on this cruise - it is an added-on expense at the rate of $12 per day and is collected via your on-board spending account.

Now to work on the other details...flights, accomodations, and such.

According to a friend's fb postings yesterday, there are at least a few other 70K alums going (a few of my favorite peeps), so that's cool. One is a big fan of Beardfish, so I'm excited to check them out since they are one of the few on the line-up I'm *not* familiar with.

Ha - this is yet another episode in the life of "carpe diem" moi. :beerwink:

Yeah, the fact that Rhia is going in enough alone to gurantee that I'd be having a blast eventhough I'm unfamiliar with most of those bands. Glad to hear some 70k goers are going to this. I look forward to hearing from you guys on how it compares to the UMC cruises. If I waasn't booked and paid for, I probably would have gone to this one if I knew about it.
