This right now. Every time I listen to it it gets better and better. Lyrically this album is brilliant, I love the whole concept and the way they play some of those riffs in the intro so when this song comes at the end it actually gives you a feeling a deja vu.

^^^ although I know the music of Emperor very well, I've never listened to Ihsahn's solo work. (yes, I know - I'm lame)

Thought I'd begin the daunting task - ha - of familiarizing myself with King's X. Daunting because their discography is large* & it usually takes me awhile to soak up an entirely new band. An early acclaimed album of theirs is Gretchen Goes to Nebraska - like it very much so far - quite unique with the soul & funk influence mixed in. They have quite an interesting biography - especially Doug Pinnick - I read somewhere how much he loves old R & B, Sly & the Family Stone & Hendrix. Well, anyone who loves those groups is a musical friend of mine! :P Also he is African-American (a relative anomaly for rock/metal), is 63 now, grew up in Illinois, my home state.

Such a wonderful journey you have ahead of you. I particularly enjoyed the late 80's to mid 90's era stuff but they're such a talented 3 piece that little fails to satisfy. I'm also a big fan of Doug's side project with Bruce from Trouble called Supershine and recently got intrigued by THIS article

Thanks Rob for the comment! Yes, indeed - really looking forward to working my way through the KIng's X back catalog. I was youtubing some live videos this morning and am now really looking forward to seeing them live on the Prog cruise in February.

The more I think about it, the Prog cruise line-up is quite unique & extraordinary in its diversity - with people who represent the genre in its very early days in the 1970s like Roine Stolt (ex-Kaipa, Flower Kings, Transatlantic), Jon Anderson, & Adrian Belew to recent & younger bands like Haken, Animals as Leaders, Safety Fire, & Periphery....and many, many bands/musicians in-between who have made a strong mark beginning somewhere in the 80's-early 2000s including a few of my absolute favorites: PAIN OF SALVATION, RIVERSIDE, SPOCK'S BEARD, Transatlantic & Flower Kings (not to mention a few newer (to me) favorites Anneke van Giersbergen & Anathema). The combination of some of my favorite vocalists ever, as well as a dizzying array of stellar musicianship & songwriting just can't be beat in my view for this type of music. Similarly, I am fairly certain that the black/extreme metal line-up (not to mention the setting of Bergen) at the "Last Supper" of Hole in the Sky will go down in my memory & experience as the ultimate for me for that type of music.

Not on the cruise, but I'm now listening to and watching the new video by TesseracT for Nocturne. The first time I heard this song (thanks to rwalters mentioning them)....it was 1000% "insta-love" as I like to refer to it. :P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=get0cXOsSXg This is just spectacular.

I really love this new video by Safety Fire as well: Red Hatchet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u05oes0x3is I like how this video was filmed - there is a smallness to the space - a tightness which matches the tightness & intesity of the music.

My camera-phone pix at gigs are notoriously blurry and bad  ...but I like this one I took of Riverside's Mariusz Duda at Chicago's Double Door venue last May.

more Kvelertak....(since I just put Erlend's pic in my profile pic taken last April - ha  )

    LIVE!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2x-s_6ol00

oh....can't wait to see them for the third time next month....
    :beerbang: :beerbang: :beerbang: :beerbang:
    :whisky:

With any luck, I'll be able to stalk and find Erlend after the gig again  and tell him again how much Kvelertak's raw punkish energy/mojo very much reminds me/is reminiscent of The Ramones (who I saw only once in 1980 and will never forget) - haha....as I recall, he liked that comment/comparison. :P

    Ramones live in London 1977
    Part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1oLQ55IfPA
    Part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DraO8zUSeKw
    Part 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SETxYGeKsc4

oh man...that whole gig was so amazing....there was no one ever quite like The Ramones - then or since...although Kvelertak in some odd way comes very close in my view.

I'm assuming this means you dig it? Don't know Ayreon at all (yet) - yes, I'm lame, but there is just too much music out there!!! *runs arounds in circles* - but the guest artist list I read somewhere is impressive....also 20+ minute songs - sounds promising!

Been listening to the first (of 3) albums by Haken this weekend....

I like it very much, although perhaps not quite as much as Visions & The Mountain. To me, this album is solidly in the progressive rock genre and not "metal" to my ears in any way. (Not a bad thing by any means, as I was a classic/progressive rock fan (what seems like) eons before :P I was any kind of metal fan ;) ). There are a few random death growls, but they seem somewhat out of place in the context of the whole.

Ughhhh Ayreon. Brian LOVES to torture me with Ayreon, I like concept albums but I just can't handle Arjen's stuff. I don't mind The Human Equation too much (primarily because Devin and Mikael make it worthwhile for me and the album has an interesting premise) but that's pretty much the only one I can tolerate. I will likely try to listen to the latest one for the guest artists, specifically Marco, Tommy and the dude from Grand Magus.

Pretty good so far. I'm surprised he released this so recently after 'Eremita'. Nothing is as good as 'After', though. haha.

I'm worried I won't like this one. Is it more like Eremita than his other albums? I love angL and After, I didn't care too much for Eremita; I prefer his songs that are more blackened than prog.

Ayreon is cheesy for sure, but I think you'll enjoy it quite a lot. Arjen takes a bit of a 'prog-rock-opera' approach to storytelling, and this ayreon album marks the first sitting solely outside of a continuous story he told over seven albums. Also, on the previous ayreon release, your main squeeze Mr Daniel Gildenlow has a pretty big part to play! The guest vocalists he has had on The Human Equation, 01011001, and the most recent one is a super impressive list. But yeah... long songs... not easy to absorb!

Agreed on the Haken front. I listened to the mountain again this weekend... really love it!

    Re: Ayreon -
Yeah this one takes the cheese back up to the level it was at before the human equation. It's an opera for sure, with lots of slow ballady parts. Not a metal album per se. Surprisingly enough, all the vocalists on this album sound relatively similar, with the exception of JB from Grand Magus.. he stands out quite a bit. Marco's performace is excellent, but he is singing in a higher register than he normally does with Tarot or Nightwish so it was a little weird to listen to.

As for the Ihsahn... if you didn't like Eremita.. I don't think you'll like this one as much. Sorry!
