    YES MA'AM!!!

Here's my story re Caladan Brood....when you first mentioned them, I looked 'em up on Spotify and they weren't there (that is only about the third time in nearly a year I've been using Spotify on a daily basis that a band and/or album I wanted wasn't there). Well, at that moment, I was like pfffft about it and didn't look further. Well, since your message above, I discovered their album is on youtube in its entirety - yay!! http://youtu.be/py6iHvKbDjs

So....my verdict is in based on listening to the first half of this 111 minute album twice (got interrupted about half-way through & later started again from the beginning (but, bah, got interrupted again so couldn't finish)....

    Excellent!!!

Kinda sounds like Ensiferum (in theme; i.e. folk/fantasy epicness) meets (a bit of) Agalloch (in brooding bm atmospheric epicness - yes, I'm making this up as I go along :P ) to me - a great thing since I LOVE both bands. The opening track reminds me very much of the opening instrumental track (Ad Victoriam) of Ensiferum's Victory Songs - good "soundtrack" type music for Braveheart and/or Game of Thrones.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BH7pKds_A6U

Curious & intriguing "band" in many ways...
    * from Salt Lake City, Utah - not exactly the kind of place I would expect to spawn such music.
    * (only) two somewhat mysterious band members/characters who go by Shield Anvil & Mortal Sword - a la Ghost. Maybe some people find this secretive identity schtick hokey, but I like it.
    * I briefly scanned an interview with the members who said their "studio" is their home computer  and when asked:
"Would it be a fair assumption to say that Caladan Brood will never be a live touring band?"....they answered: "Yes, that is fair and correct assumption."

I'm assuming this means you dig it? Don't know Ayreon at all (yet) - yes, I'm lame, but there is just too much music out there!!! *runs arounds in circles* - but the guest artist list I read somewhere is impressive....also 20+ minute songs - sounds promising!

Ayreon is cheesy for sure, but I think you'll enjoy it quite a lot. Arjen takes a bit of a 'prog-rock-opera' approach to storytelling, and this ayreon album marks the first sitting solely outside of a continuous story he told over seven albums. Also, on the previous ayreon release, your main squeeze Mr Daniel Gildenlow has a pretty big part to play! The guest vocalists he has had on The Human Equation, 01011001, and the most recent one is a super impressive list. But yeah... long songs... not easy to absorb!

Agreed on the Haken front. I listened to the mountain again this weekend... really love it!

Didn't realize Ayreon was/is considered "cheesy" since I've never listened to them.... re: your comment...."Also, on the previous ayreon release, your main squeeze Mr Daniel Gildenlow has a pretty big part to play! haha "main squeeze"

    yep.

the man pretty much walks on water in my view, more so than *any* musician/singer/songwriter I've ever come across in my liftetime (which is saying a lot, and extraordinary that I only discovered him about 5-6 years ago ;) ) ....just discovered this video this morning- nice - top "vocal moments of Daniel Gildenlow" :P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XA-rxAmn ... 1QO1daK688

Re "long songs" - I actually really love very long songs (as well as super short ones a la The Ramones)....if anyone here has the patience and likes this kind of uber old-school overwrought proggy kinda thang - check out some of Yes' Tales of Topographical Oceans (if you don't already know it) released nearly 40 years  ago - double album - four sides - four songs.  I bought this album in the 70s and can't wager to guess how many times I've heard it, but what I do know is that I never tire of it, it never gets old, and I *always* hear something new.

It just seemed like every time I had put it on lately the words "Laura is gonna love this" slipped through my brain at least once, couldn't wait to hear your opinion on it (and I know your listening habits, wanted to made sure it stayed on your radar lol) - its just so gosh darn majestic. And epic. Like you should be in a montage getting ready for battle and smelling the air before the first drop of blood hits the ground.

And that sucks about live performances although I get it I guess considering a lot of different stuff that's used in it - would just be so neat to see them do a show.

Happy Halloween from me (and Gaahl  )

    Image

Never watched or listened to any God Seed until now and stumbled upon this live video from Graspop 2013 while youtubing Kvelertak....love it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8MpxdzVUo8
Gaahl has such a great stage presence - haha - doesn't have to do much more than stand there. I really need to listen to more Gorgoroth - only know some random songs from youtubing. I'm very familiar with his other musical project Wardruna which of course is very different music, yet amazing nonetheless. Makes me think of Dead Can Dance meets Scandanavian druids.

Wardruna is a very special band to me - definitely up there (probably in the top 10) in the new to me bands discovered in the past few years along with groups like Kvelertak, Taake, Haken & Negura Bunget.

:heavydrink: yeah, it's great!! very epic! I really want to look into these guys further...apparently they are super into fantasy books (and a certain series in particular: Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen fantasy novels) and are also big gamers - haha - sounds like a lot of people here on the forum. What I'm most interested in is how much of their music is "created" on a computer, that is, what instruments they really play and all. Maybe some musicians/computer people could weigh in here (because I'm completely unknowledgeable about such things) - wouldn't it be possible to essentially create almost any music/composition without playing a single instrument (besides a computer)? Such a weird thought to me in a way. I mean DJ's have been doing it for a long time, and there is all kind of electronica which is mostly that and keyboards at most...but thinking about it more from the angle of a band/music like this Caladan Brood. Very interesting....

Lately, I've been listening to "Beneath the Black Flag" by Miracle of Sound. They've been posting songs on the Escapist for a long time. They change genres every song (including dubstep. Yuck), the only constant being that each song is about a particular video game. I've been ignoring them for a long time, but then they decided to do a pirate one about Assassin's Creed 4. Pretty catchy.

    Sweet!

Posted this on facebook tonight and thought I'd repost it here.... :P
So, as I was driving 14 year old daughter Genevieve to a Halloween party tonight, this song came on the radio and she said "oh, I LOVE this song!" This made me really happy. http://youtu.be/-ewq73ADlEg
    It is a great one!!

This is David Gilmour's There's No Way Out of Here....such an amazing song. It's such a brooding lamentation kind of song (in a really, good way.. ;) ) - just draws you in, so awesome.
There's no way out of here
    When you come in
    You're in for good
    There was no promise made
    The part you played
    The chance you took
    There are no boundaries set
    The time and yet
    You waste it still
So it slips through your hands
    Like grains of sand
    You watch it go
There's no time to be lost
    You'll pay the cost
    So get it right
There's no way out of here
    When you come in
    You're in for good
    .....

    Aaaahhhhhhh....

Giving progressive metal band Periphery another listening shot since they're on the Prog cruise....
Hmmm - really not caring for Spencer Sotelo's harsh vocal style...kind of reminding me of Meshuggah who I'm not so keen on either. Musically, they are somewhat interesting, but overall not doing much for me. On the other hand, I'm really digging The Safety Fire overall. Sean McWeeney (great name, eh?) strays into vocal territory on occasion I'm not so fond of like in Huge Hammers, but that is a minor complaint. Songs like Mouth of Swords & Red Hatchet are great overall imo. Regardless, I definitely want to see both bands on the cruise. Another new to me band, Haken, is a no-brainer 1001% win - fantastic band and so glad I know of them now.

Yeah I really hate the guy from Periphery's voice. So much that I couldn't even bring myself to enter in the guitar contest that used a periphery song as a backing.

  I don't know what it is exactly, but it really starts to grate on me after awhile. I like all kinda "harsh" vocal styles; for example, could listen to people like Mikael Akerfeldt, Grutle (Enslaved), Hoest (Taake) and Erlend (Kvelertak) till the cows come home ( - haven't used that expression in awhile), but the Periphery guy, as well as the vocalists from Meshuggah and a few other bands I'm forgetting the names of at the moment, nope.

On a completely different note....I randomly picked a Devin Townsend Project album from Spotify to listen to while at work tonight and it was this:

Wow, didn't now Mr. DT did anything like this! I really love it, but not what I expected...yet, come to find out this is not his "typical style." I really am only familiar with a few SYL albums, so I have a lot to catch up on. Damn - some of these musicians have to stop being so darn prolific!! :bitch:

It's actually his clean vocals I hate, oddly enough. And yes, Devin Townsend = the shit. He's all over the place. Devlab and The Hummer might throw you for a loop as well.

 I am overwhelmed. :P This will take a while to absorb. The two I have already and know well btw are: Ocean Machine & City - a dear old music friend of mine gave me those years ago and for some odd reason I never pursued listening to DT further at the time.

Tonight, I was revisiting what really got me into "metal" in the first place....seeing Opeth live (on a whim) on October 26, 2005 at Chicago's House of Blues. Soon after that gig I bought Ghost Reveries (it was the GR tour - still have my t-shirt from that) & the DVD Lamentations from 2003 - still love songs like Deliverance to death! I miss Per Wiberg, Maritin Lopez & Peter Lindgren being in the band.
