Just finished Anathem by Neal Stephenson. I was actually surprised how much I enjoyed it, but it's hard to recommend to anyone. It has its own language, so it's hard to follow at first, and you need a good linguistic base to decipher a lot of the words, along with the context in which they're used. Also, there's a lot of mathematic concepts. And it's 1000 pages.

Again, I really enjoyed it, but it's tough for me to recommend it, unless you don't mind geeking out on some linguistics and science.

That sounds really cool. Checking out a quick summary on Wikipedia. This has me sold:

Major themes include the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics...

I'll have to add it to my list of books to read that I'll never get around to.

I completely agree. I had almost forgotten what it was like to get completely engrossed in a book. Everything else has felt like assigned reading until now.

I truly dread that moment. Starting Dance With Dragons feels kind of like coming out of unemployment. I've been pretty bad at finding something that engages me the way these books do.

I finished Dance With Dragons on Sunday. Holy shit, Martin might be the best author within the past 100 years to pick up a pen. There should be a thread with no spoilers and a thread that's no holds barred, cause I would hate to ruin someone's Song of Ice and Fire experience. All I know for sure is I'm already sick of waiting on book six. Next book(s) I plan on reading are graphic novels. Stephen King's Darktower comics and the George Martin graphic novel that looks interesting, despite the played out concept of traveling parallel dimensions.

I haven't read these yet. I really enjoyed Rendezvous with Rama and the other Rama's books from Clarke.

Has anyone read anything from Peter F Hamilton? He's one of my favorite sci-fi authors and the Nights Dawn trilogy was absolutely brilliant.

I just finished the Metallica biography Enter Night by Mick Wall. It was pretty good and well written except I think the writer came across a bit as too self important about his and rock journalists role in the biz and with Metallica. And I knew they never really accepted Jason but reading this it came across that they really dis-liked him.

Next book up for me is Chelsea Handler's book Chelsea Chelsea Bang bang (borrowed it from someone at work)

Brings back memories of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I recall we were both eager to finish that saga. We had about 300 pages left and all the really awesome characters had died off. It felt like an extended epilogue.

It's a strange thought, but I wonder what Song of Fire and Ice would be like if it were written in an ancient Chinese setting. We wouldn't need dark conspiracies to kill off characters. They'd all be killing themselves off for various reasons rooted in ancient Chinese culture. Really, even George Martin was pretty light on the whole death thing when compared to the Romance of the Three Kingdom's saga, where some guy's servant would go, "Oops! I forgot to tuck the young master in" and then dash his head against the marble stairway out of shame. Still, that's probably what made George Martin's deaths have more impact.

American Gods is fantastic, definitely recommend it. As for Sandman, first two are kind of weird but after you finish the 3rd you will be hooked - there is no turning back after you're done the fourth :death:

That is AWESOME! Really is. I love Clive Barker, its amazing how talented he is. First book of his I read was actually the graphic novel The Great and Secret Show, as twisted as it was there was an allure to it and was curious about other stuff that he had worked on and went from there.

Do you read other comics too or did you just get into Barker's comics?

After being madly in love with Hellraiser I and II, the first book of his I read was The Great and Secret Show about 20 years ago and I was sold for life after that. I finished that book in under two days! I have a handful of comics because they were his, but the only one I really collected till they pretty much quit writing it was Lobo. I kept up with some of Simon Bisley's other works because I love his artwork so much (he always did the best Lobo) and with the exception of a few others, I've pretty much stuck to collecting books. I lived among the comic world for several years, so I have a working knowledge of a shitload of runs, but meh... 20 pages every month or two just tends to piss me off.

Stephen King just had a couple of runs that I started out with too, but decided to drop once his assistant took over writing. A bunch of Clive Barker's didn't involve him either and I hate that shit. I want my authors and their writing only!

Lobo though.... mmmm.... I loved him. A long haired bastich that killed his entire planet the day he was born just so he'd be known throughout the universe as The Last Czarian. A complete badass bounty hunter. Even his posture was sexy! If he had a band, it would have been death metal. He had a thing for redheads too. haha

(On a slightly related note, Scott Ian is also a huge fan and after years of excitement that he was going to be writing a few issues after Lobo was laid to rest, he COMPLETELY FUCKED IT UP! If I ever see Scott Ian again, I'd like to slap him upside the head for dumbing it down so badly.)

Anyhow.... Roland Deschain, Pinhead and Lobo. Now that's a sandwich I've always wanted to be the meat in! YUMMY!
