As a Stars fan, I am sick of kicking the minor league ass and sucking the dick in the NHL. Winning record every year, out of the playoffs every year. I understand the economy of it. Thank you, Mr Hicks.

    I expect more.

And the Yotes to be sellers for the first time in 3 years?

So we basically gave away Torres, Lombardi and Sullivan for picks and a young player from Anaheim (Lombardi). Torres and Lombo went to division rivals, SJ and Anaheim, respectively which I find odd but oh well. Could have been worse. All 3 were UFAs who hadn't done too much this season. Just wish we hadn't gotten more in return. A 7th round pick for Sully???

I would trade any 7th, 5th or 3rd, I had. We didn't see a whole lot of even picks for some reason.

I would trade any bullshit pick for a guy who can play in the NHL. Because a #1 usually can't/won't and don't. If you can get a franchise player, do it. But picks suck. Perform for me.

Absolutely. I tend to value draft picks (especially late round picks) far less in the NHL and MLB than I do for a sport like basketball (though there's a very quick dropoff after the first round) and football. I think part of it is due to the extensive farm systems that NHL and MLB have that one doesn't usually see a draft pick contribute for a few years, if ever. In the NFL and NBA, the return on a draft pick is known much more immediately.

Son of a bitch. Patrice Bergeron has a concussion. He's only 27 and that's the 4th concussion of his career. I wonder how long he can keep doing this. :|

Why does every baseball game go into extra innings when there is a hockey game on after?
Cleveland/Toronto went to 10 (I turned the channel to Top Gear!)
The Oilers/Flames game is 2-2 with 5 minutes left! Missed all 4 goals with BASEBALL.

Seems nearly every big(gish) name that moved in the past couple days had nice impact on their debuts with new clubs.

Jagr got game winner vs Jersey
Roy got a nice assist vs Edmonton tonight
Gaborik got a goal and an assist with Columbus tonight
Clowe did the same with the Rangers yesterday despite not having got a single goal all season
I'm probably missing others. Wonder if Pominville did anything with the Wild... Oops, guess not. LA shut them out :P (Thanks Kings! We're in race with them for our division and it's tight with 11 games left each)

Gratz to all the recent HTs!

I've lost out on 2 this past week just by going against those damn pesky desert dogs :?

Maybe it's karma for Edler's hit on Smitty as well as for my hating on JL when he was with the Canucks briefly

    Hello from Columbus!

Everyone except Chicago cooperated with us last night, so we'll have to force the Blues to get with the program tonight. I'll be honest, I did not see the Gaborik trade coming at all. They're looking to extend him as well, which will be nice. It was also good to actually get a real, live hockey player in return for Mason (who Philly wants to extend).

So yesterday's win was huge for the Yotes: we had just given away 3 of our forwards at the trade deadline and had to call up 2 of our AHL forwards to complete the roster, our starting goalie has been out for too weeks (thanks a lot Edler!!!!) and we used our AHL goalie (I will explain why in a bit), and already had an AHL defender and a forward (so total 5 AHLers), it was a Thursday, against the Coyote killing Red Wings and they scored in the first two minutes. Also, one of our defenders left the game in the first with an 'ailment'. Turns out that 5 or 6 of the Coyotes got the stomach flu during the day, including Jason Labarbera, our backup goalie, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Keith Yandle. They even had two buckets in the bench for throwing up, per Coach Tipp . They did not release this info until after the game. Damn. What troopers. They have now called up two more defenders on an emergency basis, so I'm wondering if the boys are still pretty sick.
At this rate we are going to have the whole Portland Pirates roster .

Ye, today's HT is pretty tricky on all 3 questions. And just to go back to your observation how new players contributed to their teams. Last night, in his first match for Pens, Jokkinen scored to only Pens goal in regulation and then decided the SO.

@EvilDan: why are Stars tanking themselves with so many trades? I mean, it's not like they don't have a chance for PO. I understand why Flames do it or in NBA Suns and Magic, but it's beyond me why Stars do this. Or Sabers, for that matter.

Another question, do all NHL teams have their own "broadcast"? I can only watch NHL on ESPN here and everytime Pens are live, before match, during intermission and after the match, there are two guys talking only about Pens, all stats are about Pens and basically everything revolves around Pens. And it doesn't even matter if they play home or away. Haven't noticed anything like that during non-Pens matches.

So I'm not as upset with the Stars. I still think we could and should have gotten more value for all the trades, and it seems to me that Nieuwendyk is getting pushed around by the other GMs. But it's a weird season being so short, and when it comes to Roy/Jagr, it was only 12 games. (And many of Nieuwy's moves appear to make far more sense after a year.)

For the Stars to make the playoffs, they would likely have needed to win 9 of the last 12 games, and having lost 5 of 6, it didn't look too promising. Even if they did pull that off, they would likely make an early exit in the playoffs. Even with their full line-up, I don't think they compare favorably in a 7 game series against the better teams. If they made it into the playoffs, they would have been running hot, so who knows, they might surprise some people in the first round, but not after that. It's not like this was a team loaded like LA last year.

I recall watching Jagr a lot over the years, even been to his bar in Prague where he has a crystal Stanley Cup, but watching him play every night just allows you to see what an amazing player he is. His puck protection is phenomenal.

And who'd a thunk it... MacDermid 2, Jagr 1. (Though let's hope the MacDermid injury is minor.)

As for the TV thing, Sounds like you're getting the Penguins local feed. Every team has a local broadcast, and it seems like it's cheaper for the national channels to buy one of the local feeds, rather than send their own crew and cameras. I definitely notice it a lot on NHL Network, which in most cases is just a straight TSN feed, but sometimes they choose to air a different (non-Canadian) game, which is usually a local feed. NBC/NBC Sports usually do their own broadcast, but not always. ESPN is completely out of the NHL in the US, so that's probably what they are doing internationally.
Never take anything I say seriously.

Oh wow! Go Lane! You've pretty much got it on the broadcast question. I usually notice that the home team tends to be the one who's local channel is ported.

At this rate we are going to have the whole Portland Pirates roster .

respect to the yotes for this :bangers:

Thanks athun! :D we will see how today goes. They might still be barfing up a storm

Seems we may have Smitty back tonight but no Yandle (he wasn't at practice today). That's not good. Yandle leads us in home scoring! He actually might lead the NHL in home scoring as a defender (thought I read that somewhere).

I'm also wondering how rusty Smitty is gonna be after being out over two weeks. This could be bad :?

Heading up to Glendale soon for the game. :D I'm hoping to catch some of the Bruins/Habs on tv at the bar beforehand but with the NCAA Basketball Tournament, I don't know if anyone will be showing hockey.

Also, Kate mentioned that Yandle sounds like he's going to be able to play tonight now.

Aaaaaand he got his 5th shutout of the season (24th of his career). He's now tied for shutouts this season with Pekka Rinne. What a game tonight! All of my boys showed up! (Well Yandle had a couple of fuck ups but we will blame those on the flu ). Wow. What a difference. Pretty sweet seeing the Coyotes dominate a full game for once. We're now in 9th place in the west (we were 13th at the start of the week). Now to see if we can sustain this and see if the Blues or Detroit actually lose a game or two...
    *fingers crossed*

Coyotes played really well last night against Colorado. Smitty got the shutout and he didn't really have to work hard for it. We had a few Mexicans who just moved up here join us so it was good that they got to see a bunch of goals by Phoenix. They had never seen hockey before outside of video games.

Only caught a small portion of the Bruins/Canadiens. Probably for the best since everything fragile around me would have been in danger. :bitch:

    Boston needs Bergy back.

I'm actually really looking forward to this game. We've got most our lineup back from injuries (sans Kesler, Booth and Ballard) and have been playing well last couple games. Your boys are likewise playing well and hopefully over that flu bug that was running through the ranks. Please don't bring any of that shit with you over the border though k? :?

They have been playing well. We went from 13th in the west to 9th with these three wins, my concern is that we have been TERRIBLE on the road this season. We really need this win and basically all of them haha. We may have Michalek back in the lineup (he has a broken bone in his foot and has been out for about a month) and Korpikoski might be back, too, though he hasn't done much this season. Michalek is a huuuuuge loss. The last game he played he blocked 8 shots!

I hope Smitty plays really well again. He was very aggressive yesterday, playing pucks like crazy. He even set up a goal because he sent a long pass while the Avs were on a line change. He needs to prove he's worth big $$ for a big contract. If not he probably will be snatched up by someone else :(. We did clear up around $6.5M when we gave away Torres, Sullivan and Lombardi at the trade deadline.....

They'd be foolish not to lock him up long term but I guess lots depends on the ownership situation and long range plan etc.

As for jumping spots in the standings, it's quite a log jam from 3rd on down so there could be many changes in the last few weeks here. Basically though, your team has it in their won control at this point since they have a game or two in hand on the Blues.

Just gotta keep winning and you'll be in the playoffs :headbanger:

That's what I'm hoping for! And yeah, rumor has it Smitty is asking for a really big amount. Maloney said that if he has a good regular season stretch and a playoff run they'll pay it, but to be honest if the ownership doesn't get resolved we probably can't afford him  unless we let all of our other 8 or so free agents go, which would not be wise, either.
