    What's your favourite cover version?

    by Bell » Thu Jun 02, 2011 4:12 pm

Apologies if a similar thread has been done before, but what covers do you guys really dig?

Off the top of my head, I have to go with:

Van Halen - You Really Got Me (The Kinks)
    Andy McKee - Africa (Toto)
Jon Gomm - High and Dry (Radiohead)
John Mayer - Bold As Love (Hendrix)

And pretty much every version of Jimi's classic Little Wing... Skid Row, Andy Timmons, Steve Vai, the G3 live jam version...

    What about you guys?

    I have no favourite covers.
99% of the time the original song is better.
and 99% of the time a cover of a song is done as a quick cash in or for a low established band trying to make a name for themselves.Or for nobody bands who play regularly in pubs.
If you're good musicians then write your own songs and don't try and ride on the glory of other peoples songs.
Also i am quite drunk and i hate tribute bands.

There's a female tribute to Tom Waits collection that is excellent. Specifically,Aileen Loy and Blue Valentines cover of Diamonds and Gold. Its real gritty, which I love. You can hear in the singers voice that she is good friends with cigarettes and whiskey.
The Silver Hearts also do a great job at that song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcT8Ntp_5xg
Fferryllt cover of Lai Lai Hei (Ensiferum) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_74CB7zIhDc
Norther cover of Final Countdown (Europe) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNvRMBqqvrs

I actually really like covers, but I hate bands that just do covers in bars to make a quick buck. I think covers actually can show more originality than writing your own original music. If you take someone else's song and make it yours and make it sound like yours, then it shows that you have your own sound and identity. If you don't pull this off though than it's a waste of time and I hate you. My favourites:
Sonata Arctica - Still Lovin You
Northern Kings - Don't Stop Beleving
    Mattrach - Plachelbel's Canon
Leander - Only Girl & Bad Romance
    Stratovarius - Kill the King
Metallica - Turn The Page (this is THE song that got me into metal)

Nightwish's version is so much better that Gary Moore's original. It's so boring compared to Nightwish's rendition.

It's terrible, however that's what makes it good/funny. I like their cover of Poison's "Talk Dirty To Me" better though.

One of the kids where I work is a C.O.B. fan and showed me their cover album the other day. I noticed an ST cover on there that I didn't have time to check out at the moment but will now. Here it is:

    War Inside My Head

45 seconds in and I like the original much better. No one does Psycho like Cyco Miko

Liked the short run done on keyboards. Not something I'm used to in an ST song but reminded me of old Rainbow or Deep Purple keys

Divinefire - The Show Must Go On (Queen) - featuring a really nice duet

Not sure if it's better than Queen's version but it is certainly one of the best covers i've ever heard.

Covers for the most part are not welcome, but here's one that I really dig:

Witchery doing Accept's "Fast as a Shark" http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=US&feature=related&hl=iw&v=EAYPYwy_BsM

Other favorite covers are: Coroner doing Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" and DAF's "Der Mussolini" (Not really.... those really chaff me, especially when they are played live at a reunion show)

I love a good cover song (especially live) and I like playing covers with my various bands. God forbid someone plays a cover song for fun and because they enjoy the song in question. You learn a lot from playing other people's music too. Self-important bands that never play covers because they are "above that" or "it would downgrade our show" and over-cynical listeners that think every cover "rides the glory of other people's music" make me laugh. Admittedly, I don't do very many recorded cover songs, but I love seeing a great cover at a live show.

Into Eternity did a fantastic cover of "Painkiller" when they were in Edmonton, their singer nailed it perfectly. Striker has done some excellent Grim Reaper covers, a smattering of Maiden tunes and they did a Dio tribute set and just nailed the stuff, it was a lot of fun. Cauldron played an Awesome Witchfinder General cover ("Free Country") at their gig here. Death Angel did "Heaven and Hell" by Sabbath and it was very impressive, that guy can sing better than I thought.

edit: I do rather like this one

Fleshgod Apocalypse doing Slaughter of the Soul is pretty brutal.

Also Cephalic Carnage playing the King of the Hill theme song was really sweet live. Too bad for them it is the best song they play.

I'm sure this is metal-blasphemy, but I much prefer Solitude Aeturnus' version of 'Shame On The Night' to the Dio version.

EDIT: Dragonland's "NeverEnding Story" is awesome as well. I'll edit my list more throughout the day, at work and not supposed to be on the forums, oops.

Dragonland's "Neverending Story" is almost too good...

Dragonland and Turisas are the only bands that could be booked this year that would make me almost as excited as last year.

Which reminds me, Turisas' "Rasputin" is another amazing cover song.

EDIT: According to my last.fm, I have listened to Dragonland over 3,000 times since 2005. Besides Sonata Arctica, that's twice as much as any other band.

Huh? I didn't know Over the Hills and Far Away was a cover. I guess the setting did feel a bit out of place. Who is the original artist?

Why that would be Gary Moore, and his version is also fantastic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLfNWH_wDIQ&feature=fvst

He also did the original version of Out in the Fields that Sonata covered

I think Therion's version of the Abba song Summernight City is one of the few cover versions that are actually good. You can tell the original from it but it's still 100% the style of Therion.

That was the first Therion song I ever heard. It was on a DVD called 'Death. . .Is Just The Beginning, Volume 7' that I bought when I was 15 or 16 or so (2002/2003, I forget the year). It exposed me to a whole new world of metal and is pretty much the reason why I like all the stuff I do now.
