Euro decline, unrest in Greece, affecting your travel plans?

by Disaster Area » Wed May 05, 2010 6:31 am

I guess this is indirectly related to the cruise, but sitting here doing my morning routine, coffe and CNBC getting my financial news fix. Wondering if there is anyone from Greece planning on coming to the cruise. The US economy sucks right now, but we aren't rioting like the Greeks (yet). The Euro/US$ exchange rate has plummeted since last year from $1.50-$1.55 per Euro down to $1.30 today (and headed down further it looks like) GREAT news for Americans headed to Europe, but not so good for you Europeans headed our way... (Canucks, the CAD and USD are pretty much at parity, so easy math for you guys).

Overall, just wondering how the world financial mess is affecting your lives/travel plans...

Forum police (you know who you are), please forgive me if I posted this in the wrong thread... :D

It's not just Greece that are fucking the euro over.there are several guilty parties.
Ireland being one of the main cuplrits.
Our goverment is doing it's fair share of damage to the euro.I'm surprised they haven't told us to get the fuck out of the Eu for the shit we've been pulling to be quite honest.
Also the whole phantom menace fiasco with ash clouds has caused some serious damage.Infact they Dublin airport has been closed the last day because of it again

Yeah, what a pain that volcano has been. My cousin from Scotland was stuck over here for an extra 2 weeks during the first eruption. He had the cash so didn't mind so much, but others have gotten really screwed by that Icelandic monster. Hope it's done erupting by January...

Greece had the oldest currency in the world. It seemed a shame.

Come hell or high water, I am going on this cruise, I saved and will work hard for it.

I think the volcano could wreck more havoc onto the Euro and US economy in the coming months, especially for the summer travel season.

I will be traveling to Norway for Hole in the Sky Festival in August. My airline is Icelandair...LOL. So maybe I cant go, or I will be stuck in Norway and cant return, with my credit card maxed out and broke because its so expensive there.

    We will see.

The economic decline hasn't really touched me at all. If anything the low Euribor has given me more money to spend on, hmm, more important things than mortgage.
As for the volcano, that won't mess with my summer vacation plans, since I'm driving down to Slovenia and Metalcamp. Hopefully it does stop erupting before January.

I will spend headbanger's holiday at Metalcamp too this summer. I just hope there won't be any ash clouds preventing the bands I want to see from coming to the festivals I have tickets for

Other than that I have already booked and paid all my journeys until the end of January, with the exception of a trip to Milan but I can do that by car if necessary and I'm sleeping at a friend's place. So in this regard I'm not paying much attention to the Euro decline.

Yeah they're buddies of mine; played a gig with them last may opening for Hibria (from brazil).

They put on quite the energetic live show. Their music translates well to the stage mainly because it's fast and not super complex.

I hope not! You will be the first person who is going on the cruise that I will meet before we cruise. I made an announcement that a irishman is coming and all the pubs are fully stocked. we have quite a few irish pubs in Seattle.

I recommend you try "Black Butte Porter" or "Obsidian Stout" while you are here....... :)

I'm not flying all the way to Seattle to drink in an Irish pub.Only reason i ever drink in them in other countries is because they tend to be open earlier than most pubs :P

We're flying in from Norway, where so far, we have been smart enough not to join the EU. The Norwegian currency is fairly strong, so we'll do just fine. Figured we'd fly over there with empty suitcases and fill them up while we're there. The only thing that could ruin our trip, is the stupid vulcano.

Ooooh Norway! My favorite country! Been three times and going back in August for Hole in the Sky! :) I really hope that my trip to Norway is not ruined by that stupid volcano. I am flying in on Iceland Air and stop in Iceland before on to BGO (Bergen)

I hope the NOK stays strong while I am there! :) I also hope that your trip is not ruined by the volcano. And I look forward to saying hello to you guys on the cruise....

Maybe we'll have to try to make it to Hole in the Sky, too! We're in the south eastern part of the country, so don't make it to Bergen very often. Let's all just hope the volcano has finished it's little temper tantrum by then!
I love flying Icelandair. Very convenient, and the airport in Reykjavik is small and easy to figure out :)

Metalwrath's plane from Ireland to the US was not delayed. He is currently in route from Newark and landing in Seattle at 8pm PST. Bekah (My cabinmate) is picking him up and I hope she has talked him into coming down to a pub that has reopened in Seattle and tonight is the grand opening!! I will buy him some ale's since the Euro is declining. But it is good to know that he got out of the country. Hope that volcano keeps quiet for a week, otherwise he will be stuck in Seattle! :D

Just drove past Sarpsborg today, and I work in Oslo. We're about 100km south of Oslo, on the west side of the Oslo fjord. There's a pretty cool local band you should check out: Nidingr - http://www.myspace.com/nidingr :beerhorns: They have Hellhammer (from Mayhem and Dimmu), Teloch (from 1349 and Gorgoroth) :metalguy:

Wow. My friends are here visiting from Oslo actually. They arrive in Seattle today. They live 45 min drive from Oslo. :) When I went to Inferno twice I stayed with them and they come to Hole in the Sky too. :)

I really liked Nidingr!! Never heard of them. I look forward to seeing Iscariah's band at the HITS pre party. Dead to the World I think they are called? My friends from Oslo are very good friends with 1349. A couple of the guys camped with us in the VIP campground at Wacken 2004
