Since I brought up the idea of "the music in my head" today in a thread - felt I had to post the lyrics to Not Afraid by Eminem - sorry for all the Eminem talk of late (since this is a metal forum) - but I'm a big fan and just saw him on Saturday - imo, he's only gotten better with age (now 38) - sober and more serious and powerful. I don't know what rap/hip hop subgenre that is (don't want to target the whole hip hop genre on this one), but it's always turned be off because of the way it seems to be so genuinely angry. Sure death/black metal has its degrees of rage and the evil, but that usually inspires awe rather than indignation on my part. I find it hard to enjoy music where the artist seems to be figuratively glaring straight at me and shouting "FUCK YOU" with both middle fingers extended in my face. Then again, being a power weenie probably doesn't make it any easier .

Well, I wouldn't say it's all angry, although of course some of it is. I like a lot of early rap & hip-hop like Run-DMC, Young MC, De La Soul, Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock, and Tone- Loc - that stuff isn't really "angry" at all in my opinion. I never liked or got into guys or groups like Snoop Dogg, 2 Live Crew, N.W.A., 50 Cent - for one - I don't like all the bitches & hoes talk and a lot of the rest of it. I used to work with a young African-American guy several years ago and we used to talk a lot about music. He was really into Tupac Shakur at the time and would talk about how meaningful many of the songs were to him. So, I ended up buying the album Me Against the World and it's really quite good (listening to it right now in fact). Sure there's a lot of fuck this and fuck that (especially in his classic song Fuck the World), but the F word has never bothered me at all in music. I've already talked a lot about Eminem - yeah - he can be really "angry" (if you want to call it that), but he's just really intense in his delivery and it works well for him (and I like it!) - I think his latest album Recovery is his best btw. I'm not much of a 'Lil Wayne fan but I love the work he did with Eminem on No Love. Similarly, I'm not much of a Nas fan but love his recent rap/reggae fusion work with Damian Marley (who I saw a few days ago - really amazing!)

I have been looking to better understand the world of hip hop. So, Eminem's not adhering to a particular subgenre style with his intense tonality and lyrics? I guess it could just depend on the artist. I know Eminem's not this, but the above-mentioned issue always seems to arise when I hear the progressive ones. We had a guy rap at a Facing History dinner I went to with my family. We were all dressed up and sitting at our tables, when a kindly college student came to the podium to talk about how Facing History impacted him. He then mentioned how he started composing rap and meekly offered to share one. Then, all of a sudden, he's all, "YOU THINK YOU KNOW ME JUST BECAUSE I'M BLACK!? WELL YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT!" Really killed the mood.

^^^ Sage - that situation you described sounds like it was awkward and a bit inappropriate considering the setting. I don't really want to get into a big discussion about the issues of race when it comes to rap and hip-hop - but there is certainly a lot one could discuss. The one thing I will say is that one of the reasons why I think the Eminem phenomenon (and I call it that because he is SO HUGELY popular) especially intriguing is that he was a white guy who made it in what was largely an African-American music genre.

Don't worry, none taken. I love the way Justin (the singer) can bring emotion into the lyrics. Most of the things he writes about are his feeling or things he has dealt with in his life. But I can give you another example of a song if you are willing to listen to it. A bit less disturbing I think, yet again very emotional. I just love the violin in most of their songs, just brings a certain kind of emotion to the song.

This song came on the radio while I was driving in the car this morning....a huge favorite of mine years ago that I hadn't heard in quite awhile. Hearing it inspired me to read about Gerry Rafferty, who I never really knew much about. Sad to read that this great Scottish singer-songwriter struggled with alcoholism much of his life and died of liver failure at age 63 last year.
