70K Tons of Metal Cruise 2012?

    by Laura » Sat Jan 29, 2011 8:17 am

Lol.....been home less than 24 hours and I'm already thinking about this epic metal adventure happening again in 2012. (similarly, I made plans to go to Wacken 2010 immediately upon returning from Wacken 2009 :headbanger: :beerwink: )

If indeed a 2012 cruise happens - who would absolutely, positively go?
    Count me in! :D

Oh, it'll happen. I wanted to point something out. Look here: http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s ... 753418&z=6

Look where Miami is, look at Cozumel, look at Jamaica. Distance is significantly longer because they will have to go all the way around to the west of Cuba. One extra day? Maybe two even? Maybe they will have 50 bands playing in stead of 42? only 359 days...yeah im counting the days, what??

    ...eh?

Yes, but would be awesom if they had more special fun metal type of events, like a metal trivia game or a head bang contest. Shit! Even table hockey!

I will absolutely do everything I can to be on the 2012 cruise. The maiden voyage was the greatest trip of my life and I wouldn't miss the chance to do it again for anything.

Oh, we will be ready for the next one, better start saving now! I'm glad we're one of the Florida people who get to see Testament in Lauderdale tonight... because it is TOO MUCH TO ASK to "come down" from this heavy metal high so soon!

It was so great meeting so many of you, what an unparalleled time we had! Brian is still sleeping right now... I just got up myself. Someone had to continue uploading all the awesomeness sitting on the cameras! :headbanger: :headbanger:

70000 Tons 2012?? HELL, YEAH!! If it would be one or two more days, it would be great because right when we were starting to feel like a family, the trip was over. WTF!!?? Even the bands were having a blast with fans!

BUT... if there is a 70000 Tons in 2012, you better announce it now... I have to start saving money now! DX

This was my first metal festival ever. I'm thinking in going to MetalCamp 2011 =D I guess once you like festivals, you can't just stop! :headbanger:

Keep giving feedback you guys - I went to most of the press conferences and they said that they DEFINITELY plan on this being the FIRST of many epic sea adventures. The more support and feedback they have the better. We'll have articles with full information on our site pretty soon (some great facts you guys want to know - like our cruise consumed more alcohol than any other Royal Carribean Cruise....ever...). Look for it within the week! In the meantime, come and upload your videos on our Heavy Metal Social Network and support all the bands and fans.

For me to go in 2012 I would need a completely new line up. This line up was great! No problems there.
But I would not want to see the same bands, there are so many great metal bands that I never get to see,
Annihilator,Helloween, Sinner, Storm Warrior,Witchcraft and Grave Digger to name a few not to mention
all of the great Doom bands.
I want to see a big line up of bands that don't normally tour my area. I go to shows all of the time so to see
the bands I have seen many times, it doesn't make much sense to go on a cruise to see them again.
 to the next line up!

I think it's tough to offer that to everyone as certain bands play some parts of the world more than others so, no matter where you come from, there's going to be some bands who've been through your area a number of times in recent months/years. So long as they keep the diversity close to how it was this year, with a variety of European and North American touring regulars, I think they've got that part figured out.

While there is little else aside from finances that could keep me from making this an annual thing, I'd love to see more diversity in terms of genre representation. Something like 5 power, 5 death, 5 thrash, 5 black, 5 stoner/doom, 5 classic (stuff like Uli), 5 heavy metal and maybe 5 randoms made up of 1 glam, 1 shredder god, 1 folk, 1 new/unknown and 1 distinct headliner would be perfect for me.

Pretty sure they could fill the ship with something like that too.
So far at least, 2011, 2012 & 2015 were enough for me

One thing about next year... I hope it's not on a significantly bigger boat. I loved the fact that it was only 2,000 people.

Although, I'm sure it will be..... and it just wouldn't be quite as awesome.

I asked this guy if we perhaps drank more beers than a normal cruise, his answer was something like "oh yeah, first night you drank more beers than a normal crusie does on the entire trip..."

Yes, I heard from event staff as well that we set epic records for alcohol consumption. More sold on day 1 than any cruise in a week. Ran out of Fosters and Budweiser on day 2. Ran out of coca-cola the last night in the karaoke bar.....

OH YES, I am in every year, if the line-ups stay this good. I had the pleasure of having several of my favorite bands on this cruise, so if that trend persists then I am definitely going again and again :shred:

Oh, and in case anyone from Sanctuary is reading this: Thank you!! Between the laughs, the metal, and the alcohol consumption, I was one incredibly happy cruisegoer. You're the best.

    I'm in next year.

The question is whether or not the promoters at least broke even. I know they didn't sell out. Has anybody heard what the profit/loss was?

I doubt we'll get that number. What I would imagine is that the promoters had a multi-year plan so this year's profit/loss isn't as important as future years. Given how we are all ranting and raving about it, I would expect it to sell out next year, and maybe through next year they could recoup some losses if in fact they lost money on the first one. Hopefully they made a profit and this event goes on for many years to come.

I've been too so many different metal festivals over the years but this cruise just shit all over every single one of them.
As far as the comment about wanting to see more bands that don't play the U.S. well if you look at the amount of Europeans that were on this cruise i doubt that wil be an important factor.

I wouldn't wanna miss it - but to be honest, it's quite an expensive trip...but this most likely wouldn't prevent me from coming again ;)
we thought about the line-up and came to the conclusion that this year's was already as good as it could have been (for us)
a totally different billing is a given, imo
as is the fact that it will easily sell out next time

I can't say 100% I'd do this again (I WOULD LOVE TO ... every year) I would also like to see the line-up first / I mean the virtual world gather was kinda neat, but a faster announcement rate would of helped sales I think.
Better merch and extra items would of been nice. (like a simulated drinking horn with 70000tons and band logos carved into it, can holder, patches, etc)
and How long before the dvd will be released? (with bloopers, random shots and so forth)
... side note will the bands be adding any full shows as a bonus disc/dvd to their next cds (ie deluxe editions) I have some awesome footage but shitty sound do to the wind and how I was holding my camera. (aman amarths pool stage set was spectacular from my point of view, the lights show with the fog and wind DAMN)
the event could of been a day or two longer as I didn't get to see all the events/venues I wanted to either. :shred:

(to those who wanted to catch all the bands us marathoners ... who actually made it?) I know I failed at it only seen maybe 30 so bands (a couple twice) and got 11 or so full shows recorded few others where I didn't record anything but saw the full show.

and I'd like to extend a BIG THANK YOU to all the bands for being so cool about putting up with us. Loved almost everything about the trip .... minus a couple minor malfunctions but you'll have that.
one last thing sorry if I offended anyone and not being a little more social. LOVE YOU ALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :viking:

This time around I will wait for the line up to be at least half finalized.
I would love to do it again, but after that crazy line up of bands I need them to do something crazier with who they book, and that'll be my push to go again.
That's for next year. In a couple of years, I might just go for the partying and vacationing again. Twas fun as hell.

Sheila!!!! Thought about you while on the cruise and missed you! Hope you and hubby are doing better - and last but not least - see you in 2012!!! Missed Grimmy as well who couldn't make it - she always cracked me up so much on the "for the ladies" (hot guys   ) thread. Her enthusiasm was unmatched  :trashdrink:

haha - my husband is currently in bed with the flu :) it was worth it.

Ugh...ditto with mine. At least it didn't hit him until the flight back. Can't wait for 2012!!! I few days of inevitable sickies is sooooo worth it.
