Unfamiliar with a band on the 2012 tour?

    by Dude Number 1 » Tue Jun 14, 2011 11:57 am

It would be nice to have a thread to steer you to that ONE cd that you just have to have from a band. I'll start

If you are unfamiliar with Therion I would tell you to get Sirius B. They tend to stay away form their early hard stuff live. They also evolve pretty drastically but my favorite period from therion was Sirius B and Mats Levén did awesome vocals on this CD.

Theli was ever so delightfully bombastic

I too am a big fan of Theli AND it almost won my vote as the ONE Therion CD but I had to go with Sirius B.

There can be only ONE. These are the rules. Now we fight it out! :viking:

well, Deggial and Vovin are still up there (butter than Sirius B, in my opinion)... but Sirius B is good

Much appreciated. I've recently been getting into Mats Levén's work like Abstrakt Algebra, Krux and At Vance (had albums for years and never knew who he was)

Have yet to get to Therion but I will certainly check out Sirius B when I do.

    Good idea. I'll do Stratovarius:
The only albums that matter by them are (chronologically):

    Episode
    Visions
    Destiny
    Infinite
    Polaris
    Elysium

Feel free to argue with me but there are only a handful of songs outside of those albums that are good (Fourth Dimension has a couple, same as Elements Pt. 1). Intermission is good too, it's a compilation of B-sides, covers and live tracks. Looking at those albums the further back you go the more speedy it is and less progressive it gets, it all has a neoclassical flavour though. Timo Tolkki's style is a blatant ripoff of Yngwie Malmsteen, if you pay attention you'll notice plagiarism all over the place. He even plagiarises himself a few times. I'm really glad he's not in the band anymore  Starting with Polaris they had a new guitarist who came out of nowhere and kicked ass. He even does a fair share of the writing, giving them a more modern sound on those albums.

I will argue that Mats Levén, and the Niemann brothers were a great mix that put Surius B ahead of both Vovin and Theli. What I am not going to mention is that all three of those dudes did work on Gothic Kabbalah as well and neither you or I are propping that album up. :?

I vote for Episode. "Father Time", "Will the Sun Rise", "Speed of Light" all some of my favorite Stratovarius tunes.

If you are unfamiliar with Moonsorrow, then I'll recommend to start with Voimasta Ja Kunniasta, their second album. A few of their biggest hits are there: "Kylän Pässää", "Sankarihauta" and "Sankaritarina".

It takes some work to get into their music and most of their songs are extremely long (several are over 20 minutes), but they grow on you after a while :)
If you like Voimasta Ja Kunniasta, then you can go on with Kivenkantaja, Suden Uni and the newest one Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa :)

    Enjoy!

My Dying Bride - it's like saying do you want to sleep with the porn star, the stripper or that uber hot chick over there. Hard to go wrong with most of their material.

Just stay away (at least initially) from the street ho or the Hooters Waitress (Like Gods of the Sun & 34.78888%). Those are okay albums and have some good stuff on them, but they pale in comparison to the rest.
    WISHLIST

BOLT THROWER / MADDER MORTEM / SEAR BLISS / AEON / THE AMENTA / AUTOPSY / MDB / THE 11th HOUR / HAIL OF BULLETS / DORDEDUH / TRIPTYKON / NE OBLIVISCARIS / PORTAL

    The Sultan of Stroopwafels
    The Viceroy of Vegemite
    Loather of Power Metal

I'll start off the Coroner ramble....
The old stuff is by far the most popular e.g. : RIP and No More Color.
Two very fine albums but the must have, I'd say, is Mental Vortex.
    GOOD GOOD stuff :headbanger:
    2011 : Cabin #3500 - Survived
    2012 : Cabin #4025 - Pending

    Death Tribute / Atheist / Coroner / Opeth / Cynic / Morbid Angel / Kreator / Tankard / Vio-Lence / Hail of Bullets / Nuclear Assault / Impaled / Gojira / Heathen / Deadly Remains / Venom

Moonsorrow's best album is still Suden Uni, in my opinion.

And seconding 'Slania' by Eluveitie. I'd say one of my favorite YouTube videos ever is Eluveitie performing "Gray Sublime Archon" at Summer Nights Open Air: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kw00ZFcRbSE
If they perform this anywhere near as good as this video, I will already say it will be the performance of the cruise.

And I actually prefer 'Gothic Kabbalah' by Therion, but I feel like I may be in a huge minority here.

Voimasta... by Moonsorrow is great, but so is their entire catalog. Start with that, or Suden Uni.

    Eluveitie are REALLY good live

So am I the only one who thinks Verisäkeet is Moonsorrow's best album? Evidence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DjnTkDAF0E
    Closely followed by Kivenkantaja.

For Eluveitie I'd go with Slania too.

The old stuff is by far the most popular e.g. : RIP and No More Color.
Two very fine albums but the must have, I'd say, is Mental Vortex.
    GOOD GOOD stuff :headbanger:

No More Color is the perfect blend of the old and new. I love Mentax Vortex, but it just can't go toe to toe with NMC to me

I'll continue the Coroner ramble and throw 'Punishment for Decadence' into the mix :shred:

It's really a tough call. I think all are about equally as good.

While I find it hard to be nice to anyone or thing from Boston (hatred of the Red Sox and all that jazz), check out NO MORE COLOR & MENNTAL VORTEX, you'll probably enjoy albums more than Punishment and RIP.

Don't get me wrong, if the Sox are on at a bar or something I'll watch them and root for them... but baseball is at the bottom of my sports list. I won't get in a froth to defend them since I've experienced plenty of douchey Boston fans myself, having lived here all my life. If they're in the playoffs though, I'll watch it. :D

Oh yeah there are a loooooot of annoying fans out there (though nothing compared to Yankee fans :P ). Plus, it seemed like a Yankees Suck chant went out at every show at the Palladium which was kind of annoying.

Yes, living in Baltimore I've dealt with many Red Sox and Yankees fans at O's games.

There is no comparison.... Yankees fans are about 10 times as annoying and obnoxious, not to mention rude and conceited. Of course there are nice ones out there (like Mr. P), however overall, they are terrible. Red Sox fans are only slightly annoying and most of them are fine actually. This is not just my opinion but a general consensus of many people in Baltimore.

I haven't heard that chant in a long time around here, so I think people have kind of grown out of it. Although during the Stanley Cup finals I thought I heard the Canucks fans chanting it at the Bruins? I was like, "You're doing it wrong..."
