    Miami (half) marathon

    by Thaurin » Fri Jan 18, 2013 2:25 pm

Might seem like a completely insane idea to some, but is anybody doing the Miami marathon or half marathon the day before the cruise? I think I'll do the half marathon, since it fits perfectly with my training schedule!

    Here you go Tom

I'm doing it as well as my cabinmate, I'm pleased to see you're doing it as well Thaurin! If our times are anywhere similar I'd be happy to run together for motivation...I'm figuring ~2:10-2:20 accounting for massive hangover

Awesome! The biggest official race I've done is 10k, and I'm training for a marathon in April right now. Trying to do that one in under 4:00, so I should probably be able to make 2:00 (but yeah, drinking on Sat night and everthing, hmmm :/), but I have no qualms with going slower. I just need to get this run in for my training! I was worried I would skip it. :)

    Where are you staying?

    Hi there,

i will also run the half marathon. 2:10 to 2:20 is my estimated time as well. My BIB is 19410 (Corral G). Maybe someone is in the same corral.

I'm staying at Miami Beach Hostel. I'm not sure how we plan to get over there on the morning of...perhaps taking a cab as close as we can get and then walking.

Do you mean South Beach Hostel? I stayed there last year and was considering going there again. That's great! I had idea yet either, but I was thinking cab. It's about 6 miles to the starting line, I think. We'd need to get our BIB number at the expo on Saturday, I presume. You arrive on Saturday?

Ran track and field in college. And was good (was the captain of a Division I team).

Now I get winded standing up from my work chair too fast. It's only been four years. Ouch.
You kids have fun, I'll be drinking and gaining weight somewhere.

I agree...you mentioned gaining weight in another thread...don't be too hard on yourself. All the mitochondria density increases, all the increased capillary flow, all the slow twitch muscle fibers...it doesn't completely vanish. You'll have an easy time getting back to it. What better time than the Miami Marathon?

I stay at the south beach hotel (not hostel). You have to pick up your bib at the expo on Friday or Saturday.
This is only a few blocks from my hotel away.
I also wonder how to get there. There will be a shuttle from the expo at 4 am. Maybe I'll take this one.
The shuttle costs 20$ but it will also bring you back.

Running together will be only possible if we are in the same corral I think. Remember there are over 20000 participants.

By the way... thank you for your compliment hdangie. I owe you a beer.

Hmm, so we could at least arrange to go there together, since we're all wondering how to get there in the middle of the goddamned night, haha. I think the expo is about a 30 minute walk from South Beach Hostel, but I'm sure it can be arranged. If some of us could join up on Saturday to pick up our bibs, that would be awesome.

Ugh, this is going to be a brutal day....I'll probably come back to South Beach soon after, take a power nap, and head to the beach by noon to start drinking.

Oh it'll be alright, yeah? I mean, we should be back by 9 or 10. I ran 11 miles last Monday, wasn't too bad. I'm sure I'll be able to drink at the beach party after! Who needs sleep!

I ran 6 miles today and was tired enough, but I think it was mostly being tired and not eating so far today. I ran a half marathon in around 2 hours in October, so I shouldn't be too far off.

Hmmm, South Beach Hostel where I stayed at last year is a bit of a walk from the Expo. :( I'm sure I'll manage it, but it's not ideal. Maybe I should look into that South Beach HOTEL instead, but that will be a bit of a walk from the beach party. ;)

This is so insane, I could manage up and run a half marathon in my Achilles armor no worries, but one day before the cruise with all before parties Thats just plain stupid, the first day on the cruise if would feel that your legs are dead. But creds to all those who are up for a run
Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment

Then you're not properly prepared to run a half marathon. I should be able to run it next week without too much discomfort afterwards.

I'm also training for a full marathon and I don't want to interrupt that, so this is perfect.

    Have fun!

I will arrive in Miami on Thursday. I don't know if i pick up my Packet on Friday or Saturday at the Expo. Also I haven't booked the Shuttle yet. I think I will do so when I pick up my BIB.
Therefore I should be at the Expo at 4 AM at the race day.

Sadly, my knee has been bothering me, but it'll be fine. :)

well good luck ivo van heel... :)

I have lost 15 lbs since Barge to hell. Amazing how 5 miles per day of fast brisk walking with interval jogging right in my living room can do that in such a short amount of time. Love working out until my breathing is labored and my clothes are drenched in sweat.

Serious weight loss usually only occurs after a month or three with me, probably because of the beer or bad eating habits. But I've lost at least 10 pounds in the last few months myself! I could stand to lose some more and I'm sure it will happen.

Did the half marathon today in 2:10:44 :deathhorns:

Saw some metal-heads on the way back to the hotel. I was greeting them with my winners medal (some kind of really big bling-bling i normally wouldn't dare to touch) around my neck and they just looked at me like I came from out of space
