I think this may actually depend on what time you board the ship because I remember last year we all ran up to the 8th floor and the doors to the hallways with the actual cabins were all closed. It didn't take that long to get to the cabins, but they weren't immediately available at least on my floor. Must just depend if they have them all cleaned or not. Still it didn't take that long, and it was a good time to make friends with people who were on the same floor as you.

That's consistent with a "normal" cruise, BTW, where the cabins are usually ready by around 1 pm. If you're lucky to get onbroad fairly early, you might not be able to access your cabin.
If last year's (ahem)....extended...boarding process happens again, a lot of us won't have to wait long.

As a followup on getting into the stateroom early....
For some reason the porters never appeared to take our tagged, checked luggage (and tips) when we got to the pier at around 10:15, so we ended up having to schlep our rolling luggage all the way through boarding. We weren't alone, either; a lot of people who were also dropped off by shuttles at the far end of the pier were hauling their big suitcases, too.
So when we got onbroad I figured we'd go down to the room to drop off the big stuff, even if only in the hallway outside our room. The door leading to our corridor was open, our stateroom door was open and the room had already been cleaned but the beds weren't separated.* We dropped our stuff off in the room (it was about 11:30) and called Guest Services to have the beds separated...and you'd think we killed someone! A three-stripe officer from Hotel Services showed up and sternly lectured us in badly-accented English that rooms were not to be entered until 1 pm and we shouldn't have gone past the closed corridor door (it hadn't been closed).

So yeah, don't expect to be able to go to your room until 1 pm lest ye face the wrath of some cruise-line dude.

    --
    * in 8 cruises over 2 lines, I've only seen them get the bed configuration right once. (!)

That's odd. We snuck into a stateroom early on a previous cruise (also had an open door). The room attendant came by and said the rooms couldn't be entered yet but he was very friendly amd let us put our bags in it and load up the safe.

I think our mistake was in calling Guest Services to have the beds separated. It put us "on their radar," whereas our stateroom steward would probably have been cool with us just leaving our stuff in there. (We STILL didn't get any towel animals, though. First time that's happened in 8 cruises.)

We were thinking our room might not have been occupied on the previous cruise so it looked made up already, but our souvenir soda bottles had been delivered already, so.......

Depends on how many bars you pass on the way

but what i remember from last year, it was alot of Walking between sets, alot of stairs or elevators, so say maybe 5-10 minutes in worst case scenario.
Thh, i took to the last day of the Cruise Before i could find my way through the ship

Yeah the bitchy thing about the Liberty (and so the same for the Indenpendence) is that for certain venues there was no direct route due to the configuration of the ship from one venue to the next.

You'd have to go up stairs, then down stairs, etc to get from A to B. Took me to the end of last years cruise to find my way around comfortably too.

My biggest gripe was getting between either the Pyramid and Studio B or Alhambra and Studio B. We would always go up extra floors to avoid cutting through the Casino (even though we missed out on seeing Kai and the guys from Tyr doing so)

2016 was my first year on board and even though I prepared well for the cruise and did a lot of background research, one thing managed to surprise me:

There are several sources, including Royal Caribbean site and this thread, which state that you can bring two bottles of wine with you on board. I'm not sure if this changed for 2016 or if there was some mix up, but this wasn't the case with us this year. At the luggage scan I was pulled away and asked to open my luggage. After pulling out my two bottles of sparkling wine I told the officer that I tought they were allowed, but she stated that no such policy existed and they confiscated my bottles before letting me to continue.

However, I was not declined to board or given any penalties, and in fact the bottles were delivered to our cabin on the last cruise day and we had no problems to dispose them. There were also many pairs of wine bottles among the confescated items, so I figure we weren't the only ones who had the impression that bringing two bottles of wine was ok.

Other things that I learned and will do differently next year:

    - Arriving at least a couple of days earlier. This year we arrived Miami one day before boarding and were left with practiclly no time to explore the great big US of A. Also, there was no time to get over the jet lag, so we were already having minor sleep deprivation before we boarded. Probaply the biggest con was that I hadn't spoken english in a long time, so I was a bit rusty and because we spent such a small amount of time on shore before the cruise, I never got to loose my tongue properly. Combine this with being either a) tired, b) hungover, c) drunk or, as in most of the time, all these combined and you get one quite shy Finn on board.

    - Don't bother getting to the venues early. You can get to pretty much any spot you want to, even if you arrive late. There is no point waiting half an hour for the show to start.

    - Pool stage > other venues. This year I made our schedules based on catching all the bands that we wanted to, not paying attention to the venues. Even though there is nothing wrong with theattre or ice skate rink (Pyramid Lounge plainly sucks), Pool Stage shows are just way better, just like open air stages are far better than tent stages at summer festivals. Next year I will plan on catching more of my favourite bands on the pool deck, even if it would mean that I miss some bands completely.

    - You get some really stiff Gin 'n tonics at the bar at Windjammer entrance. These work as a great way to treat your hangover after breakfast.

I would argue that point heavily on one level - IF you want to SEE the band at the lounge then you have to get there early.

If you are anywhere more than about 1 person back from the stage its hard even for me to see anything (and I'm over 6 feet tall!).

I'd hate to be a short person trying to actually see a show there.

That is a really good point and I agree 100%. Pyramid Lounge is definitely an exception.

Yeah the Pyramid Lounge was shitty but there was something that just felt right about it. Especially when I saw Ghoul, DDLM and Nervosa. It reminded me of the dingy little dive bars and clubs they used to have in Toronto.

Sure, some of the best shows I've witnessed in my life have been in small, "shitty" venues. There's definitely a special vibe that they hold, so I don't want to diss the Lounge too much. The problem is that it has way too low stage, so in order of getting that vibe, one should be able to get a good spot in front of it. Unfortunately in the shows that I attented in the Lounge it was too late at the time that I arrived, so I had to grab a table and try to get the best out of it, with poor results. In a way I can also blame myself for this, for arriving too late. So as I stated earlier, cowboy certainly made a great point by stating that you should definitely arrive early for the shows in the Lounge.

Maybe this year they will put a riser on top of the stage, or make some attempt to improve things. I know that Koyi K Utho moved things around on the stage so they could stand on some equipment cases, and it helped them out a lot. One can always hope!

Bring earplugs for when you try to sleep. They aren't for the noises coming from outside your room. They are for the noise coming from inside your room, i.e., that one room mate that snores. Haha!

Thanks to Bob's thoughtful addition, I will be sure to pack ear plugs, but more importantly, those nasal strip thingies for myself, to reduce the fury of my inevitable snoring

The Champagne Bar also serves pretty strong cocktails.

But by day 3, basically all of the bartenders have stopped giving a shit about the proportions of your drinks, and they get really strong. At least in my experience.

We had pre-ordered the soda drink package (the less-pricey one) via Royal Caribbean's website, and it comes with a "souvenir" soda bottle...it's a tall insulated, sealable Royal Caribbean logo cup. They were in our stateroom already so we knew that part of the turnover from the previous cruise had been completed.

BTW, those cups, on Independence (and on Liberty in 2015) are basically useless except as a logo souvenir; you can always just get a soda at a bar by showing your SeaPass card, and who wants to carry the damned cup around all day?
Certain Royal Caribbean ships have FreeStyle Coca-Cola machines, and on THOSE ships the souvenir cups actually serve a purpose: they have a chip in the bottom that activates the soda machines. A lot less hassle and you don't have to deal with surly bartenders.

Reading back through this... there are stateroom stewards? Never once saw mine in 2015 - our beds were never separated either, so I didn't think that was a thing.

Lol,so I don't know about this ship but on the Majesty it seems there where secret panels and they would just pop out.You can get your bed separated by using the phone in your room.Just call asap and tell your steward you want them separated.I never saw them that much either but the better the cabin the more likely you will see them.In the expensive ones they usually introduce themselves.

We've always seen our stateroom steward. When we first go to the room they are usually in the hallway introducing themselves to us. They get really antsy if you're trying to nap during the day and they can't come clean the room.

I don't think we've ever really intentionally let one in. Same way with hotels, we normally just keep the DND out the entire time.

OK, - this is our first cruise. -

we're flying from London on Sunday.

I've been reading stuff online about cruises & I'm a little confused on a few things.

Are you allowed to bring power adapters (Power strips) onboard?

I've read conflicting things online - but that may refr to other cruise lines or whatever so I was just wondering.

Also what pin type / voltage are the plugs? - IO'm guessing US 2 pin sockets (120 volts AC)?

Power adapters are fine, and yes they are United States standard sockets. Even if 'technically' they say you should not used these power adapter or power strips, they are not enforced. I bring a small power strip every year. Bringing own hair drying or other items with heating elements are more discouraged, but I am not sure how much this is enforced either.

About power just in case people don't know.If you see 110-240v on an item, voltage isn't a concern.Almost every cell phones, battery charging devices and computers use any voltage.Hair Dryers are on the ship and just about every hotel has them.Hair Dryers are one thing that definitely is not voltage friendly.
