If he's doing that, then he's a bigger ass than I thought. By doing that, he's screwing the booked bands out of media sales. I'm sure I'm not alone in that when an unfamiliar band is announced, I'll buy a couple of CDs and downloads. If they're all going to be announced later rather than sooner, it's going to be too late to make the purchases since there won't be time to listen to all of the new music.

Another great point. I definately fall into that category.

This is the post from the skipper -

Andy wrote:Personally I think it is not fair to my crew and over all towards my Customer Service Team to complain about Customer Service. Some people mistake their lack of patience regarding band announcements with Customer Service. No one ever, not me nor anyone at UMC ever promised when bands are announced, or how frequently. All we promised was that we have 2,000 Tickets for being 4 Days with 40 Metal Bands on a Cruise Ship for the trip of a lifetime.

    Therefore:

When I announce the bands and in what frequency = The Skipper's marketing tactics. Call me an asshole if you want. I will deliver what I promised. If you have a question or concerns or would like to update or change your booking: Give us a call, or send us an eMail and this I have to say about my hard working team:

Answering every customer eMail within reasonable time by a personal eMail, not just some template or link to the faq's = Customer Service at UMC

A hotline that you can call toll free from anywhere in North America and that during office hours is answered by a highly trained live person = Customer Service at UMC

During the night and over the week-end you may leave a message and everyone gets a call back within usually less then 1 business day = Customer Service at UMC

Accommodating many, many special requests (you know who you are) from many of our customers = Customer Service at UMC

Last but not least I have to add that as part of good Customer Service we take complaints seriously and will adjust our services where this is possible. Therefore I will more frequently announce that I have nothing to annouce from now on. :beerwink:

    Cheers,

    The Skipper

Now that is quite a legitimate reason for bands announcements and one reason I love about MDF. Sure, they announce tons of obscure bands, but at least we get 200+ days to check them out, purchase releases and get familiarized with possible set lists which adds to the overall enjoyment of the event. Last year 2013, was tough to get into some sets with all the last minute announcements. If Nightmare was announced a few months in advanced I would have gladly bought some CDs and enjoyed their set considerably more, because whatever they were playing was pretty awesome. Holding back announcements hurts the fest...but of course all you guys on here already know that. ;)

Dude you are totally preaching to the converted here with me.

I can use the 2011 cruise as the perfect example.

Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Tyr, Sabaton, Ensiferum, Korpiklaani. All bands I wasn't too familiar with - hadn't even heard of Tyr and Sabaton prior to them being added. Had months to check them out as they were all added months before sailing, so I bought heaps of cds online from them. And now, pretty much own every CD from most of them!

Fast forward to 2013. If I had a few months notice, I would have bought cds from Steel Engraved, Knightmare, Fatal Smile, Lizzy Borden.... But not when they were added days before the cruise.

And to be brutally honest, after the cruise the motivation just not there to check them out - as I never saw a single set from Steel, Fatal and Lizzy I am even less likely to buy cds from them as I'm afraid I'll regret having missed seeing them!!!

I couldn't agree with stach's last comment any more, he has hit the nail on the head. The lack of communication by UMC has been mind boggling. It will no doubt be a great time but as an International event with people traveling from all parts of the globe it can't be that hard to keep everyone in the loop. Looking forward to next years event.

I'm fully with you on this Dallas, after the cruise sure, I saw Nightmare but I was so metalled out that I didn't purchased anything for a month. I had no motivation to purchase anything because I already went on the cruise. I had to do a last minute download on Lizzy Bordon and purchased nothing from them because if I ordered anything I wouldn't have received it on time. I'm not trying to be a dick to UMC, but they have to know that managing announcements this way hurts everybody, especially the bands. Lets not fool ourselves into saying things like "this is about the other cruisers." A part of it is, but when you look at the big picture this its a METAL FESTIVAL, where the big draw is the promised 40 BANDS. Bands bring people out, bands are the draw and thus are undeniably the heart of the festival. UMC advertises with such statements along the lines of "everyone practically has a backstage pass," or "Make no mistake, this is not one of the cruises where you share the ship with regular cruise guests..." The waiting is killing me and as I have said before I am trying my best to make this my absolute last voyage with UMC.

I booked 2013 just for Doro.

Kreator, Lizzy Borden, Helloween and Metal Church were absolute bonuses.

2014 had me booking straight away for Death Angel, Symphony X, Overkill and Fear Factory.

With the Carcass announcement it was all on broad!

So maybe 4 to 5 bands is all they need to get 'me' in.

The first four bands had me and my nephew .... Carcass was a big bonus. there are a couple others hope there are a few more must sees, but beyond this year I'm not so certain I'll do this again. Really looking forward to doing other bucket list things with my limited vacation time. We'll see as I never say never ... maybe   :beerhorns:
