    merch/drinks

    by surfslamdive » Mon Feb 10, 2014 11:14 pm

I had this conversation with a few people and was wondering how much people spent on merch/drinks while on board. I also heard that a Canadian (?) in the hot tub was buying shots for people all night and his bill for it came to $1600! Can anyone confirm? Just curious...

That was probably Calvin (safety first) - I heard he was around $2000 on day three...

I was cheap on the booze this year (week in Mexico beforehand could do that..) and only spent $300 on broad.

I ended up just short of $500. No merch tho so this was only the bar tab.

I met an American who mentioned he had been on cruises before. His theory was that a lot of people would spend their cruise ticket on drinks/merch/shore excursions based on his own experiences. I tend not to drink or buy merch at shows I go to, mainly so I can see more shows.

My tab was under $300. I'm proud of that.

EDIT: $105 of that was from merch.

Actually that was Ryan from Calgary. On that one day he dropped 1100 on hot tub shots  He had a good time, it was his first cruise!

My bill was 388, that includes 40 taken out at the casino (which in the end I was up 45 dollars on  ) so really...303 I suppose. Didn't get any merch this year which I kind of regret.

As someone who loves to hit the 70K merch sale regardless of waits etc, but sat at home on his ass this year, what were some of the unique event only shirts that bands brought along for sale this time?
So far at least, 2011, 2012 & 2015 were enough for me

If I remember correctly, the band event shirts for 2014 were available from:

Carcass - Olive green with torpedos on the front, the Majesty of the Sea as the target on the back
Death (To All) - Single sided shirt with 70,000 Tons of Metal & the dates worked into the design
Obituary - Band logo on the front, Obituary in Costa Maya on the back
Swashbuckle - Dual sided. Don't remember much more as I didn't buy it.

There might have been more special shirts, but I didn't notice them.

Nah I think that pretty much covered it.

LEAVES EYES had a shirt had the 70k dates on the back. Not sure if any others did.

EDIT: Cripper also had a Mayan-style design shirt, but it had nothing 70k specific written on it.

Dark Tranquillity had 70000 tons of metal on the back since they were booked early and could print the date and event as part of the tour.

    I spent about 600$.

200$ was on photos, memory cards and other incidentals.
400$ was on booze for me, what I bought for others and the tips. I left about a dollar on 35-40 drinks over the whole week.
Won 364$ at the Casino on day 2 - which helped greatly!
Bought two tees while I was onbroad total.
    2014 - Cabin 4537!
    2015 - Cabin 6471!
    2016 - ???
    2017 - Likely my return :D .

Also, you can bring on two bottles of wine a person! Just bring them in your bag, it's totally allowed and an awesome way to save a bit on booze. That said, you'll be tempted constantly by tropical drinks brought by on trays and the convenience of pool-side bars, so be prepared to charge a bit to your account. Both years I've gone I hit around $300 which included one piece of merch.

The merch situation can be pretty crazy on board, the line gets really long so I'd recommend going early if there's something you really want. That said, the merch is always worth it, but just be aware that you might be waiting in line.

I've always wanted to buy merch, but, I've never found the merch cave on purpose. I stumbled on it when I was on the way somewhere else. I was always so busy that I never really had the time to think about buying shirts. You're partying, having a good time, you might forget all about buying it. Especially if you might potentially miss a few bands...
