    CRUISE BUDGET

    by edfe07 » Fri Mar 07, 2014 8:55 am

Hi guys, hope that 2015 will be my first cruise and I'm having doubts about how much money I will spend in the cruise, plane ticket aside. Someone could help me giving me some estimate about this? What's the cost of services inside, and of course, the booze?

Hope to see you in the next cruise, I think nobody of my country has been there ever.

at the old boat you only pay for internet, sodas(coke, sprite), premium coffee, ice cream, alcohol, room service - a flat rate, and burgers at the j.rocket( less than 10 dollars).

I dont drink much so I spent 90/100 dollars - (internet, 4 or 5 drinks, couple of times at J.R, ice cream once)

I also gave a $20 tip to the maid.

A beer is around 5,5 (Corona, Heineken, Blue Moon, all bottled ones I think)

    T-Shirt $20/25

I spent between 250 and 300 bucks on the 3 cruises I went, it depends on how much you drink, and what you drink hehe.

I spent $440 USD on the boat and for the first time for me most of it was spent on merch ($280).

As others mentioned it largely depends how much you're planning on boozing.
    The other stuff(hotels, flights) are fixed based on your budget;
for example, my badget being tight this year I only spent $30 staying in SoBe Hostel.

I always head straight to the airport, so I don't spend anything on hotels beforehand. I also always drink a LOT and I don't think the whole trip has ever costed me more than $2200. I can usually fly from Calgary for around 450-500.

for airfare just go to skyscanner.com, orbitz.com, hotwire.com, decolar.com(in porttuguese and spanish) and see how much it is. I think Avianca or Taca has a direct flight from san salvador to miami. Copa has a flight thru Panama city.
for hotels just go to hotelscombined.com (arrive one day before departure so you have time if anything bad happens) and choose a hostel

That's about my figure as well, and I'm paying for two (at least for the cruise itself).

I believe when I went both times I spent about 2500 - 2800 the entire trip.

This is also including shopping in Miami for little souvenirs for friends and what not.

I'd agree that 3000$ should cover everything.

Last year I saved up about 2000$ and then my dad gave me my plane ticket as an Xmas present . He has heaps of air miles from business travel and going to see his girlfriend in the States, so while the seat was kinda shitty (middle seat, back row BOTH ways ) I was happier than a pig in shit to have that covered by reward points!!! For hotels, I would definitely recommend sharing a rm with other cruisers pre-cruise. My one British cabinmate was very awesome and it definitely brought down the costs to go halves on the hotel room before the cruise. Post-cruise, I just wanted to sleep for twelve hours and eat greasy pizza - so, I'll probably keep booking a NICE hotel for after the cruise to recover in.

I drank a lot onbroad , but I also managed to win 364$ at the casino too so my drinking after that got a wee bit carefree I must say.... :trashdrink:

I use the rum runner bladders and sneak on about 3 liters of booze. BUT I am a weenie and need to buy frozen drinks on broad and merch and shit so I spent about 300 on broad (for 2 people). Not bad!

But it is an expensive vacation.

for 2014 it was (for 2 people) 500 flights, 400 for hotels before and after cruise, 2100 for the cruise itself, 300 spent on ship, 100 spent in Mexico, and probably another 300 in food and random stuff before and after cruise while still in Fl.

    I'd say I spent around 4,000
(although Charlie doesn't get paid vacation so we lost 6 days pay which would bring our total spent to about 6,000)

all the moneys spent is totally worth it!

Liberty has a steakhouse so I better budget a little more.

I purchased a lot of music onbroad in 2013 but purchased no music onbroad in 2014. I spent a little on booze last year, probably equal to 70k merch. I didn't see the point in waiting in line for 2-3 hours for band merch when I could get it online. Besides, I was in the middle of an extended holiday so I didn't want to buy too much that I'd have to carry with me for a month or ship home.

I like to assume I'm going to spend at least an extra 20% on whatever I budgeted for booze. As lame as it sounds, you're able to pre load your card everyday, so you don't accidentally spend all your money buying everyone a round :P

Are the other specialty restaurants besides J. Rocket's and the steakhouse (like Portofino's, etc.) also open during 70K?

The "flat rate" charge for room service that was mentioned.......is that all the time, or only charged after midnight (which is Royal Caribbean's normal policy)?

This won't be my first time to the Royal Caribbean rodeo, but it will be my first time on a full-boat charter, and the differences can be...interesting.

They're mentioned on the deck plans on the 70k site, so I guess they'll be open. Opening hours might be different from regular cruises. I believe the charge for room service was only between 00:00 and 05:00 or 06:00, but I'm not 100% sure, as I never used it myself.

Yep, I was applying the same logic with the 70k deckplans. in four cruises I have yet to set foot inside a steakhouse or upcharge restaurant except during a tour...maybe that will change.

It's been since early 2010 since I was last on a RCCL ship (Majesty, in fact), but I remember the late-night dining choices were really limited. I think even the pizza place was closed at night.

I miss the Compass Deli, though. Really good, no upcharge, and it is the only Compass Deli afloat, exclusive to that ship.

I had gotten room service on the ship once and it was free.

I bring my 2 bottles of wine allowed, but also bring rum runners!
Even with that I do spend money on the awesome frozen drinks on broad.

I limit my merch purchases to only the 70k shirt for that year (unless there is something else I really really want)

I end up spending more money before and after the cruise in Florida then I do on the ship.

It is an expensive week but well woth all the money spent.

At least we get a whole year to save for it!

Speaking of cruise budget, I've already started saving in the vain hope of affording 70k 2015, but should DEFINITELY be able to do 2016.

I've decided any money I get above and beyond my monthly salary will go into a 70K of fun 'bucket'. So tax return, survey websites, frequent shopper points (we have this scheme called "flybuys" which I can use on flights), etc.

For Mrs Statsman and I to do 70k in comfort costs about $8K ($3K for a nice twin cabin, $3.5k for flights, $1.5k for accom/transport/food/merch/duty free/etc).

Currently got $650 in the 70K of fun bucket. Almost 10% there! LOL!!

So, How do YOU save for 70K?

I don't. Well, if I end up going, I have to skip some other travel plans, and I'm really uncomfortable doing that yet again. I really want to see some other places. I hear there's a small underground death metal festival in Ulan Bator; how cool would that be?

Ain't gonna lie; it's gonna be tricky.

Toward the end of the year I'll have to budget for DragonCon, a big SF/fantasy convention, then for the ProgPower USA metal fest, then for a regular cruise in October, then finally for 70K. (!)

With luck -- and hopefully some overtime! -- I'll be able to do it all without tapping deeply into my savings. Here's hoping!

How about the royal couple consider booking into a quad? I'm sure later in the year there will still be people looking for cabin mates. Twin is not really necessary as everyone says, you spend very little time in the cabin anyway, and financially it will be easier to save for. Any sacrifices necessary to make it happen.

For me, I only heard about the first cruise maybe in September 2010 so by then it's too late to save money for it, but from that point I was determined to be part of such a unique event and would do whatever it takes to be on the next one, so was really hoping it wasn't going to be a one off event. I was only working part time then so had to make some changes to my budget. Cut down on hobbies such as playing paintball and shooting pool with friends. I even cut some bills like phone and internet so when I needed to use the net I'd just go to friends or family. Like I said, any sacrifices necessary to make it happen. It was worth it in the end. And that is how I saved for 70k.

Now I'm living in England where it's cheaper to travel than from NZ, and I'm working full time, so it's much easier now.

No more shows, no more comic books, no more videogames, and very few select, books.

Thing is, I have to save for grad school too, so I'm trying to cut my expenses as much as I can, to get a little "fun" fund to use while studying. I'm expecting some money in July. Right now, it should be enough to pay off any debts I have by then and pay most (or all) of the cruise.

My method is really simple: I have several clients and I put aside the money coming from one of them every month. If work keeps coming from this client until the end of the year (which is a real possibility), I will have no problems, otherwise my beer budget will be really-really slim... No, I cannot let that happen! :belly:

somehow it always winds up working out -

Charlie and I are not very good savers as we love traveling and going to concerts! When we do go on the cruise, it does take a few months to recover financially from it, but we manage!

Exploring the ship was part of the fun on the first cruise though. There should be plenty of time before the muster drill to wander around aimlessly and discover all the little corners of the Liberty. :stagger:
