    3 Countries, 3 Bands, 3 Genres

    by Andy » Wed Dec 30, 2015 1:40 pm

After the inaugural 70000TONS OF METAL in January 2011, some of our survivors conceived the "Cripper Award" - named after the band CRIPPER, the award is bestowed on the best band that had been previously unknown to most Sailors before sailing on The Original, The World's Biggest Heavy Metal Cruise.

Please welcome 3 Bands from 3 different Countries playing 3 different Genres of Metal that may qualify for next year's award: ABINCHOVA from Switzerland, PAINFUL from Germany and TWILIGHT FORCE from Sweden.

And now we will sail to a land of ice.

I listed pretty much all the bands that fit the clues on metal archives. I would love if we got Alkaloid or Orden Ogan.
    Dude, you almost hit all.

So... between Samael and Sodom, and from Iceland? Hmmm.

It can't be Solstafir, so sad. Maybe it's Skalmold? I'm just going by a search on the Metal Encyclopedia. Skurk is another possibility.

I'm kind of wishing the "?" is the wrong place by mistake and we're really getting Solstafir, lmao.

Oh and about the bands added, I have to listen to those. I don't know anything about them.

Well, that's a solid zero sets from the last four bands announced. I'm still hopeful we'll get a couple of good death metal bands.

Took a quick listen to the 3 added.

Abinchova - A style of folk metal I don't care for.
Painful - Average at best black/death metal. So many better choices for this style of music.
Twilight Force - Happy power metal, almost as intolerable as Freedom Call to me.

A solid zero sets for this filler for me. Hopefully they are up against bands that I want to see.

Twilight Force is another very pleasant surprise although I'm a little sad Andy didn't bring Sabaton back so Joakim could perform Gates of Glory with them
Never heard of Abinchova, going to check them out now.
Don't care for Painful at all.

Running Wild doesn't fit the location on the artist page for the 70K website. Question mark is between Samael & Sodom.

Just realised that when I initially created my current signature I said it would take 10 bands from my wishlist there to get me to book.

While I booked when only two were actually added, with the addition of Twilight Force I've now finally hit the ten figure :deathhorns:

Of the three, I'll definitely check out an Abinchova set. Not interested in Painful and Twilight Force is way too flowery for me but I'll probably still be at a set.
I should get around to updating my signature

I think the bitching, even now, is surprisingly minimal compared to previous years.

Maybe I'm just seeing things through rose-tinted glasses because I'm stupidly happy with the lineup :P

Casting broad strokes over the 2015/2016 lineups, I count 23 bands on the more 'br00tal' side in the 44 bands announced for 2016. Compared to 34 out of the full lineup for 2015.

Definitely a thrash disparity though - only 2 this lineup compared to 15 last time. I'm sure that will be rectified in the remaining 16 to a degree - but that's what I said last time around about Power Metal and it didn't eventuate so who knows? Andy knows. That's who :P

So for the three cripper bands the closest thing I can get behind is Painful. The folk bands with costumes, gimmick instruments and too many people just isn't my thing at all. Same goes for the overly symphonic and cartoon power metal is too much for me. Just my opinion....

Just checked my old emails - 2015 cruise I got my online checkin email on the 10th of January, then got an email from UMC on the 15th of January with information on the shore excursions.

So probably a few weeks away yet.

Twilight Force - Happy power metal, almost as intolerable as Freedom Call to me.

A solid zero sets for this filler for me. Hopefully they are up against bands that I want to see.

Same here. I have been trying to be positive about the lineup but it's looking pretty weak for me. That's my own fault for booking early based on the lineup from last year. I'll still have a good time - I just wont be catching as many sets as I hoped to..

There seems to be a lot of people pretty happy with the lineup though so good for them.

I re-quoted the whole message because I literally LOL'd when I read it, awakening my cat from his slumber on the couch.

Eluveitie -- a wish-list band for me, AND our #3 choice for 2016 from the combined wish-list thread.
With their announcement, three-quarters of the first-ever U.S. PaganFest lineup is on 70K for 2016, and Ensiferum, PaganFest's headliner, was onbroad 70K last January. Freakin' awesome!

I'll check out the Cripper nominees in a bit. Abinchova I'll probably like, and Twilight Force and Painful may be iffy...for different reasons.

If the next one is Skalmold, it will be another one notched off my wish-list. :headbanger: :headbanger:

Same here the lineup is pretty bad if you are death metal and thrash fan. I'm sure there will be some added. So far only two thrash bands is disappointing. I'll actually have time to wonder the board this year.

Twilight Force - amazing!!! I will check out Abinchova, I might give them a chance... we'll see.

Next band is almost certainly Skalmold. If not, it would be Seven Kingdoms (GoT anyone?). Scar Symmetry would certainly be my choice but I can't see it happening.

    Fantastic announcements, thanks Andy

Twilight Force became one of my favourite band since I saw them live in May as support for Sonata Arctica and Freedom Call. Can't wait to see them again :deathhorns:

Abinchova is a band that I wanted to see live, but didn't have the opportunity until now, so, it will be great to see them on the ship :viking:
