Schmier's interview was indeed funny, I wonder if it was inspired by real life...
I can't wait to tell Tom Angelripper in the Champagne bar how much I loved Eternal Devastation

Oh shit, Sodom just moved to 2 guitarists for the first time, and Blackfire is back.
Given how great they were in 2016 (both shows), and my usual complaints about trios performing live, this new lineup is a must see for all thrash fans IMO.

It's been a whole week. I'm getting all anxious, with winter settling in and the servers being down at work.

    Andy? Time for another announcement?

Gonna take a lot to get me back next year.

Second longest gap between band announcements since announcement began for the 2019.

We had to wait forever for them to start, but at least the brightside is that it's lead to a fairly steady stream of regular announcements :)

You can check all his posts here:

    search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&auth ... &start=560

It is a good idea to start by the end of the list, as those are his first posts. He seemed to be sort of active in the forum in the first year(s), but definitely out for a very long time other than posting the announcements and informative posts.

Yeah that's right. VERY early on he did respond directly to questions occasionally.

Hasn't done that for a LONG time now though - which is fair enough.

That would require him to announce an "S" band first. So Andy needs to hurry up and announce Silent Civilian and get the Cripper Show on the road

Maybe this is why we got the Youtube post. No band announcements but maybe he's throwing some filler content in? Finally? Probably not.

If that’s the case, we already served 10 days, and there are only 83 days left.

I suspect there won't be any meaningful amount of announcements until late December.

Now that I've said it, feel free to prove me wrong!

Wait, maybe he's been giving us a deep clue and he's booking that band Forsaken.
That would require him to announce an "S" band first. So Andy needs to hurry up and announce Silent Civilian and get the Cripper Show on the road

Yeah, I'm probably not coming again after this. I find the late start AND a long period of silence a big slap in the face. And after In Vain and Mors, the only band I'm missing on my bucket list is Soilwork. A North American tour is likely imminent, with their new album release, so I'll be covered.

There's a fun time, but there's also rewarding loyalty with poor treatment.

I disagree; I feel like 70K/UMC owes us nothing. If you want to complain about the way they do announcements, include that in the Survivor Feedback. Personally, I find announcing one band at a time, and with their clues, a great way to build hype and keep things interesting almost year-round. What other festival announces one band at a time? Only one I can think of is Wacken with their "advent calendar." Add in the recap videos, interviews, survivor tips, boat facts, etc. and it's almost constant interaction - especially with their Social Media team posting on Instagram and Facebook daily, and even responding to peoples comments. What other festivals are this interactive with their attendees? I'm pretty sure none... I think the way they do things is great and I hope they continue to do things this way. Maybe they could find some middle-ground and announce a band every Monday or something (+ the initial 10 in a row and on holidays to round out the 60 days we'd need) for added stability to please people who feel the same way you do.

Furthermore, silver survivors get 5% off their next booking and gold get 10% off. That's absolutely rewarding loyalty. So is letting Gold survivors and silver survivors book before public sales. Name one other festival that rewards loyalty like this. Because I've been to tons of festivals and I can't think of any.

Tend to agree with Titanic. For all the complaints (and complaining!) we get it pretty good. Preferential booking, discounts etc.

And long silence? It's only been 19 days - thats nothing :P And for better or worse, as I said elsewhere, its expected this time of year. Every single year around this time there will be a long break in announcements. Why? Who knows! Would it be nice if they told us why? YES! But they don't have to, and clearly they will not.

On your other point though titanic - I do know at least one other festival that announces bands one at a time. Sabaton Open Air :)

      I disagree.
I believe we've had this conversation before - I'm not trying to start a fight, but you've presented an argument and I'm at least presenting my point of view. And I'm not "naming other things that X" because that devolves into an argument over semantics 90% of the time. (Well, that and because aside from Burning Man, which I have not been to, all my examples are not public festivals.)

I think that announcing bands all at once or in large chunks is better for the consumer. I find "hype" a very toxic thing and wish we would stop buying into it (something I picked up from when I used to game more heavily). So I am making a conscience effort not to buy into it.

My problem is not the social media interaction. My problem is that Andy literally told us that he would start the process EARLIER this year and would make a system that makes it easier for newbies to get on broad. He flat out DID NOT deliver one of those, and his solution for the other was to force loyal customers to hold out longer or move on. I don't think either of those was a good move for anyone involved. I know SO MANY cruisers that gave up on this year as a result. People that were otherwise VERY loyal customers. That's what I care about as far as treatment goes, not daily posts we would delete without looking at if they were newsletters.

As for gold and silver discounts - those have been a constant over the years, right? And yet the day we actually get information seems to (on average) get longer and longer and longer - that's a slip in services, to use capitalist phrases. And when fees keep getting higher and higher, I tend to not want to pay for worse things.

But again, that's my opinion. You absolutely do not have to share it and I'm not here to tell you you're wrong. I'm just frustrated and deciding to put my money elsewhere in the future.

Yeah, Andy did drop the ball on this aspect, I agree. I'm sure he is aware that we are all waiting for a resolution to this, but I'm confident we're not going to get anything that makes everyone happy. This is a very tough problem to have to find a solution for. Funny you mention Burning Man, because I'm also not a fan of their lottery system. I've never been, either, but I've been buying tickets to it for years just so that my burner friends can be sure to have them as they can easily get screwed out of going due to the lottery.
All-in-all, though, we aren't UMC and don't know what's going on there. Andy has been saying that he wants UMC to have a European cruise, right? And there's rumors of another Barge. Along side all the price changes due to the boat upgrades/cabin categories, UCM is probably busy as fuck and just didn't have enough time this year to invest in finding a proper solution to their public sales issue.

I chalk the rising costs up to raising RCI prices (+ inflation), boat upgrades, and a higher number of more popular or expensive bands. I don't see a slip in services, but that's probably a very opinionated thing, as well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mmm, I think we're all actually making very good points, I just have a really low tolerance for what I see as BS. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I dunno! Maybe UMC will blow us away with some really neat solutions next year and the discussion will be moot.

The Burning Man lottery is a weird thing that I only know a surface level about - a great number of my friends go to it, but they get tickets easier as at least one of them is a volunteer fireman.

Easy answer: ProgPower USA. If there is a problem, a delay or a cancellation, promoter Glenn Harveston is IMMEDIATELY forthcoming about the reason why and what he's doing to remedy it.
Case in point: Arcturus' completely lame cancellation a few years ago. Glenn announced the news immediately, sparing no punches, but he had a replacement band ready to announce within hours: Ihsahn, and his first-ever solo performance in the U.S. :headbanger:
      .
I think the way they do things is great and I hope they continue to do things this way. Maybe they could find some middle-ground and announce a band every Monday or something (+ the initial 10 in a row and on holidays to round out the 60 days we'd need) for added stability to please people who feel the same way you do.
I don't have a problem with the way Andy announces bands, I just have a problem with the timing, the delays, and the sometimes complete lack of information. I also have a problem with WHEN he books bands (or doesn't). There's an entire YEAR between 70K sailings, and yet he books some bands incredibly late in the game, sometimes during the two weeks just before we sail. Seriously? For such an otherwise well-run event? He couldn't have had his bands locked down sooner? It boggles the mind.

--And yet, in the end it all works out.
      Somehow.
All the stage gear gets carefully hauled up over the side and abroad the boat with that enormous crane. The pool-deck gets completely rebuilt, the pools are drained and decked over, and the stage gets built, lately even facing the right way from the get-go. The logistics involved are truly daunting.

Would I consider not going in the future because of all of the bullshit? Ehhh, maybe. I'm committed to going to Europe next summer for Ayreon's performances, and that will eat up some cash. As of now I just regard Andy's....unusual....booking and announcing process to be laughable, but ultimately a minor issue with an otherwise amazing festival.

I am bit unhappy about the genre distribution of the first batch of announcements.
Till my silver survivor code expired, there were very little number of melodeath/black metal bands. I decided to pass this year as the line up was not my taste.

Then he announced bands i'd die for and booked i am...

      I want my 5%!!! :D

I've tried to distance myself from the "OMG ANDY WHY ARE YOU DOING THINGS THIS WAY" drama this year. It's always amazing, and I'm just running with that concept. When we're onbroad, nobody complains about the announcement schedule, and it's what happens onbroad that makes me keep booking year after year. I want to get drunk on slushy drinks in a hot tub while listening to metal with friends from around the world. Can I do that? Yes? Good. Take my money. Also, I want Demons & Wizards in 2020. Announce that whenever you want.

Ehhh, 70k to Progpower is like apples and oranges. When you start out promoting a small regional festival in a bar around the year 2000, it's easier to set that standard of open communication. Conversely, when your first festival is backed by diverse investors and involves booking several headliner-calibre international bands in international waters, there are too many logistics to focus on. Doing a lengthy post about how the 60 bands were chosen each year would sell zero tickets.

In this day and age, artists, labels, and fans are sensitive to insider information. Glenn Harveston can get away with stuff like badmouthing Volbeat for dropping Progpower to take another opportunity. He has a funding model involving sponsor attendees, and just grew the thing himself. If Andy puts something in writing about how irritated he is with Kamelot's statement, Finntroll's drunken set, or how shitty Amaranthe's new album is, that does no favours with stakeholders and all the moving parts of UMC. I've been to Progpower several times and love the openness, but it's less than professional at times and involves on average lower-level bands. Although I wish announcements were timed, on the flipside I know Andy will never do something like instituting a rule against moshing/crowd surfing and then request one of his favorite songs to be covered so he can personally stage dive alone. Apples to oranges.

Andy's engagement, directly or though employees, is equal or better than other similar festivals. That doesn't mean there aren't plenty of headscratchers.

I mean... did anyone really expect to have a full lineup before December after the latest ever start to announcements? I figured that best case scenario was to get caught up to where we normally are around this time, which is around 40 bands. They have always saved 15-20 bands for the final stretch.

Of course the announcement process is cryptic and odd, but I knew after my first year that the only safe expectation is that it’s going to be an amazing event once you are there. That’s what I book and pay for... the experience on the ship. Can it be irritating in the lead up? Yes... but I think I’d be a lot more irritated when the announcements finally do hit, and I come to the realization that I won’t be taking part.

70K also must realize that people are contantly begging for updates and getting upset because their customer base is borderline obsessed, which is always going to be viewed as a good thing from a promoter perspective. Their market is constantly engaged year round, for a 4 day event! I think they’d be a lot more concerned if no one cared anymore than if people are anxious for news/announcements.

Are some people deciding to skip a year? Sure, but I would still bet that general interest keeps increasing every year, and veterans are quite likely to return at some point. This event isn’t going away any time soon.

Yup - and if it sells out 3+ months out from sailing like it did this year there is no necessity to change regardless of what we think/want!

Agreed, but that's not really what I (or anyone, AFAIK) is looking for.
I think most of us WOULD like more openness from Andy (or whoever) as to why the lengthy delays occur...or at the very least, an estimate of when we can expect any announcements or bookings to resume. We've seen several posts on FB groups from Survivors and newbies alike who opted OUT of attending 70K 2019 because of that looong initial delay, citing that "extreme unprofessionalism" as the reason.
In this day and age, artists, labels, and fans are sensitive to insider information. Glenn Harveston can get away with stuff like badmouthing Volbeat for dropping Progpower to take another opportunity.
--Except that, as I recall, he didn't. The band was willing to play but "they got too big too fast" and their label nixed the show due to touring and promotional issues. He WAS disappointed, to be sure, as booking Volbeat that early was quite a coup, but I don't remember him badmouthing the band themselves.
A similar thing happened when he approached Opeth about performing at PPUSA III. The band was willing to perform and this was before they had toured the US (so it would have also been a major coup), but after the bean-counters got involved, he had to move on and he booked Devin Townsend for us instead. Like Ihsahn's, it was Devy's first solo performance in the U.S. (Or ever.) But he never held a grudge against Opeth (or later, Nevermore) due to industry crap that was out of the bands' control.

Glenn DID badmouth Arcturus -- and for good reason -- after they abruptly cancelled, but had no problem swiftly upgrading us all to Ihsahn. :headbanger:
He has a funding model involving sponsor attendees, and just grew the thing himself. If Andy puts something in writing about how irritated he is with Kamelot's statement, Finntroll's drunken set, or how shitty Amaranthe's new album is, that does no favours with stakeholders and all the moving parts of UMC. And fewer bands....but on average, one tenth or less the cost for attendees.
Although I wish announcements were timed, on the flipside I know Andy will never do something like instituting a rule against moshing/crowd surfing and then request one of his favorite songs to be covered so he can personally stage dive alone. Apples to oranges.
lol, really? Someone got butthurt about THAT?
Also, he has since relaxed both of those rules, judging from this past September's PPUSA.
Andy's engagement, directly or though employees, is equal or better than other similar festivals. That doesn't mean there aren't plenty of headscratchers.
Yep. And I really love both festivals and will continue to support and attend both.
