I notice that 70000 tons does not often go to Cozumel , but they went there on the first cruise in 2011 .

I did a bit of reading on this last night.

I'm only here to do two things: play the bagpipes and gargle sulphuric acid. Looks like we're almost out of acid.

Yes, unlike at Grand Turk or Labadee, there is no beach right by the cruise pier at Cozumel (and at most ports, really).
Taxi rates aren't too outrageous, and are set by law. There is a large sign after you "escape" the cruise pier shopping area showing the rates.
I've been to Paradise Beach in the past, which was decent. It's south of the cruise piers.
This time I might go to Chankanaab, which is a national park to the north of the piers.

    Hola!

Speaking of day trips in Mexico.
Um, is there a ferry across to Playa Del Carmen we can take to the temples
    like Bopa and Tulum?

Or are we sailors just stuck on Cozumel for the day?

There should be an ferry every hour to Playa del Carmen and back 365 days a year depending on the weather.
The ride takes about 30 minutes. Price 220 pesos ($11.6) one way … 400 pesos ($21) if You want to take the trip back to Cozumel. :D
There are now two companies that service the crossing.
All boats are similar. All of the ferry companies have kiosk near the ferry pier. Most people just show up and take whatever boat is leaving next. You can buy one way or round trip tickets. They recommend just getting a one way ticket and then buy a ticket when you are ready to come back. That way you are not waiting for a ferry that you already bought a return ticket for or trying to catch a certain time ferry.

There are also Mayan ruïnes on Cozumel (San Gervasio) but imo not so spectacular as the ones in Tulum or Chichén Itzà.

Yep, there are ferries, as that highly informative post stated.

HOWEVER, if you want to go to Tulum or Xcaret or anywhere else on the mainland from Playa del Carmen, book it through the cruise-line. It might cost a bit more than arranging it privately on your own, but the timing is tight and if you book on your own and encounter problems, the ship will NOT wait for you. If you book it through the cruise line, they MUST wait for you, or make arrangements.*

    -----
    * I've seen videos where the cruise line hastily arranged a fast boat to bring people back to the ship, already sailing on, and bring them back onbroad through the lower gangway while underway.

    Whoa!
Well, hoping no problems occur down there.
I remember Costa Maya was a breeze, on the bus, temples, back to port to shop.
Even though we arrived late that morning. (Can't remember why though).

    Gracias Pellaz.

    Very helpful.

And club 529 in Atlanta has Primate gig on Jan 4th.
    I'll be there too!

Hopefully, no chasing after the boat though.
So booking it all through the cruise sounds great to me. |
    Cheers

Yep, actual real info is filtering out in dribs and drabs....as usual for 70K.

It would have been REALLY funny to see something like "Snorkeling and beach with members of Edenbridge" or "Private villa for the day with members of Blind Guardian and Amon Amarth."

Given the little time we have on Cozumel, I'd suggest Tulum. Hell, I wouldn't even go out of Cozumel, the island itself has many great things to do & visit.

But yeah, Tulum is badass. Wonderful beach at the feet of the ruins

Have to agree. Chicken Itza ( :D ) is the better-known of the two ruins sites, but Tulum is significantly closer to Playa del Carmen (which is the mainland side of the ferry connection to Coz).
Tulum is still quite a long ride, but not quite as long as CI and you should (" ") have more time there to explore and maybe get wet at the beach.

We are seriously considering Tulum for this trip. It all depends on the previous night's running order as the excursion would have to start very early in the morning.
I should get around to updating my signature

Yep, it will. You could always book it now and then, if needed, cancel it once onbroad** if the previous night's schedule doesn't work with it.

We will probably just book on the ship once the running order gets released (so never  ). The excursion with the Tulum ruins and cenote swim looks great, if we can swing it.

I was super excited that RC offered a scuba trip at noon, but when I got to the boat I found out they rescheduled it for 7:15 am. Currently wrestling with the whether it's worth giving up the Day 2 late night shows for.

Ship leaves Cozumel at 14:30... so little time.

EDIT: Nevermind wrong print at booklet, it is 16:30.

We had booked the snuba and were really annoyed about that time-change as well. I'm sure it's because they had other ships in port that were arriving and/or staying later.

We ended up doing the excursion with Oystein and Jorgen from Ihsahn (and also Emperor), who had randomly booked it also, so it became "Snuba/Scuba with members of Ihsahn and Emperor"

So how did Cozumel meet your expectations? As an american-born guy raised in Venezuela, I got used to good caribbean beaches so I got high standards. I was somehow disappointed with the beaches in Cozumel. To be fair, it was raining so that did not help at all with my first impression.

First I visited Paradise Beach and Palancar Beach on the west coast. Those two were too touristy for my taste (overpriced and watered down cocktails), so I did not stay long in those. Water was calm and it looked clear, but the weather was not cooperating. Water was quite cold.

Then we went to Punta Sur Eco Park at the south part of the island, which was a more interesting place to explore since it is a protected area. Saw some wildlife including flamingos, iguanas and even a raccoon eating a coconut from one of the tourists. The beach in that park was so-so, calm waters but muddy with some algae. Again water was cold.

Finally we drove along the east coast where we noticed a lot of waves. Visually it was nice but I wish I had more time to stop in one of the beaches there. We did not have time to visit the mayan ruins at San Gervasio.

We did the dune buggy and snorkel/beach excursion with members of... Origin and someone else? I don't know, we didn't go for the artists, and there was very little interaction possible anyway.

    It was sketchy AF.

I had the idea that the dune buggy part of it would be off-road, because otherwise what's the point?

    Nope.

They didn't even ask to see my driver's license before I was driving my kids in traffic, in town and on the highway, for the bulk of the 3-hour excursion. The seatbelts were not adequate in the event of any kind of collision or rollover. The steering and brakes were shitty, too.

The snorkeling part was half an hour, including gearing everyone up, safety talk, and getting everyone back to the dune buggies. Super rushed.

The beach part was actually just a restaurant, and if you wanted to see the beach across the road, there was no time to get food.

I'll be honest, it was exhilarating, driving a dune buggy with poor steering and brakes in traffic in Mexico where I have no idea about local driving customs. I guess it was a slice of Mexico? But I think it's a big safety liability for RC to provide that tour. We also could have gotten lost pretty easily, if the caravan had gotten split.

The tour operators were great, however, extremely hardworking. We were a very large group for the type of tour, which was part of the problem.
I'm only here to do two things: play the bagpipes and gargle sulphuric acid. Looks like we're almost out of acid.

Oh, where did you see them sitting? Were you part of the incredibly early (7:45) excursions at Sand Dollar Water Sports? (Or whatever it was called; something like that.)

As for Cozumel, I've been there and done that a few times. The excursion we did was pretty good and my friend Alex loved it, but I wish we'd been told we could have hung out there and snorkeled for free after our snuba excursion; I had even brought my own snorkeling gear for that purpose. But, they touted doing snuba again (for a price) or doing scuba (for a price), and I didn't get the impression they wanted people to just slum around. Turns out that Oystein and Jorgen from Ihsahn stuck around and snorkeled. Oh, well.

They do excursions all day there, hourly, for cruise visitors, so we were not happy with the change in time from noon to 7:45. They could have made it 9 or 10 o'clock. Just another day of not enough sleep; I had many of those this time around.
