Open Mic Night - Details and Songs to Consider?

    by ShoreSlayer » Fri Mar 19, 2010 3:10 am

As stated on the main site under The Event> The Voyage...

    Day 2 Day on Sea
A whole day on the open seas, sailing along the Cuban coast. Enjoy tons of live shows all day and night long, workshops, bars that never close (again; bars that never close!), poker tournament in the casino, an open mic night, and tons of other onboard activities.

I know a number of people have mentioned that they sing and/or play an instrument. I'm sure there will be at least a couple hundred musicians if not way more out of 2000 metalhead passengers. So I'm thinking it would be cool to start digging up some details about just what the organizers have in mind for this open mic. Is it just Metal Karaoke or will there be amps and drums and all for impromptu or scheduled jam sessions. I'd be into gathering a few kindred metal souls together for some particular numbers but I don't wanna get too far ahead of myself with that.

I know for a fact, not sure about any of you other musicians but, so often I get to a gig and even though I'm totally diggin' it, halfway through, part of my mind can't wait to get home and play cuz these bands are so damn inspiring. No way I'm gonna go 5 straight days anywhere without my guitar, especially this environment.

So, just for hypothetical conversation's sake, a couple songs I'd like to find others to jam on would include Vampira by DTB, some classic 70's or 80's stuff like Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, Dio etc and then maybe some Raven or Trouble. For the record though, I'm primarily a rhythm player. I can improv solo with lots of heart but copying the likes of those mentioned is somewhat beyond me thus far. Toughest solo I've yet to learn note for note are from Hotel California and Mother (Floyd not Danzig). But who knows? If the "workshops" are, in fact, guitar workshops, maybe a couple new tips from the masters will free up the hidden shredder in me

Man, just another reason to be stoked for this trip!
So far at least, 2011, 2012 & 2015 were enough for me

We will have Metal Karaoke too, I don't call this an "Open Mic" however.

The Open Mic Nights will be on our 3rd stage in the Spectrum Lounge starting after the last scheduled performance until Sunrise. Anyone is welcome to join in and there will be "backup"-musicians to make sure there is always a complete band. Instruments will be available, you may bring your own guitar/bass if you wish.

I am sure some of the official performers will be joining in too, the rest I leave to your imagination... :beerwink:

A couple of my buddies and myself were considering getting some songs together and playing them.
I don't know if anyone else is interested in joining in, but we do need to get a couple more musicians on board to have a complete line up.

If you are, you should send me a message. Perhaps we could work something out?

Well, I listed a few in the first post above but the possibilities are rather endless. Maybe all of us who are interested could begin contributing towards a loose list of songs here and then we can match up more specific interests as the months go by. Personally, I don't know a lot of newer stuff and even the material I'm familiar with, I generally like to practice a handful of songs I intend to play for a while before actually getting on stage. Seeing as I work and go to school and am not currently in a band, my active repertoire tends to fade from performance ready memory rather quickly.

A quick example of stuff I could contribute rhythms to fairly easily would include most pre-90's Sabbath, Dio, Priest and Maiden. I love to solo over this stuff but don't know the note-for-note originals by heart and would have to work to even get close, but willing to do some work for sure. I'd also be happy to work out parts for a number of songs by Slayer, Trouble, Raven, Metallica, Metal Church, Death Angel, Suicidal, Testament and other thrash type bands. Beyond that, if I like something enough and have time to listen to it and figure it out, I'm up for most anything. But yeah, I'm much better off with a gifted lead player at my side than not... More of an Eric Peterson than an Alex Skolnick if you will = )

    Damn that was funny!!

Absolutely love Come An' Get It but honestly, Whitesnake were always much more a rock band than anything really metal. Some great, classic riffs and slide guitar work though. Great stuff in their genre.

    RE: Above

Definitely blues rock, then later rock, never claimed the "metal" tag, at least that I can remember. But BAD MF'rs none-the-less. Saw them las two tours (and many times before), the band with Reb Beach and Doug Aldrich is as good as ever, even as good as the '87 supergroup version IMO...

I've been going to open mic nights over here for YEARS. I like doing classic stuff like Simple Man by Skynyrd or WIsh You Were Here by Floyd.

But my favourite acoustic moment was sitting round a campsite in Slovenia at Metalcamp, with a bunch of metalheads belting out The Bard's Song by Blind Guardian. Bliss!

We should definitely gather a group of people, musicians and non musicians, and jam on the deck in the late night hours.
What beats having beers and singing along to acoustic versions of your favourite metal songs with other metalheads? \m/

That is actually a really good idea. I will bring my beat up beach guitar and get some of the bands to sign it.

Acoustic jams are a lot of fun, especially when you sing metal tunes in a funny high falsetto voice.

Yea, maybe I will have to bring my acoustic too, or maybe an acoustic bass, then we could have a real jam! :headbanger:

I have yet to hear an acoustic bass live.
It'd be a great idea to have it.
