Given that there's almost no chance you'd survive, it's somewhat frowned upon.

It is perfectly fine. Just make sure you can swim fast enough, you don't wanna get lost in the middle of the caribbean on your own!

If you jump, please do it during the return from Labadee to FLL. That way it won't affect our port-stop and (BONUS!) we might get more time onbroad while we search for your shark-bitten carcass.

The secret staff bar with dollar beers is on deck 1. You can get to it by jumping overbroad and crawling along the underside until you reach the second airlock. Bring a grapple with you though, it gets iffy on the last day when the boat picks up speed. See you there!

Passenger jumps off Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas

If somebody sees a man-overboard they will stop, maybe. If not, you are shark bait.

    https://www.quora.com/Do-cruise-ships-t ... -overboard

..."if the overboard person is not visibly detected by the crew, the ship will sail on. Even if the person is seen going overboard, some cruise lines insist on checking whether anyone is actually missing on the ship. This can takes hours. The ship will continue to sail away, making the eventual search very difficult. Sometimes the ship is so far away from the original location that the master decides not to turn the ship around. Instead, the ship will summons the Coast Guard which will be required to deploy search vessels and aircraft to search vast distances of the ocean. The prospects of a successful rescue then become quite slim.

A cruise expert in Canada, Dr. Ross Klein, has data indicating that 245 people have fallen, jumped or been thrown overboard from cruise ships since 2000."

Oh, man, that's brutal. But indeed, lots of people disappear on cruises. Its more common than one might think.

I remember watching an episode of Baywatch were some of the characters were on a cruise. From what I recall a character jumped or fell off the ship. One of the lifeguards jumped in to rescue the guy. The episode ended with the lifeguard and the other dude floating there as the ship is sailing away. It was a to be continued thing. I don't think I saw the continuation. Anyway, that sounds like a jump the shark moment for Baywatch. I don't remember anything else, it was well over 20 years ago

Some cruise ships are equipped with infrared detection systems that can sense when someone falls overboard and if so, an alert goes off on the bridge. I didn't notice them on Independence last year, but if they're there, you'll see devices sticking out over the sides in the back that can "see" the side and the back of the ship; on other ships I've seen them marked with "FLIR."

Can't speak for Royal since I haven't done the behind-the-scenes tour, but on other lines they always have a rapid-deployment boat ready to launch within 5 minutes for this sort of thing.

People survive falling off more often than you'd think even when they're not picked up right away...in warm southern waters, anyway. There's a case where someone fell off a ship unnoticed and was picked up by another passing ship because people on their balcony heard the person yelling "Help"! and notified the bridge.

    Seems like a flawed system.
You can just avoid it by jumping off the front.

But the bow is off-limits to non-crew, and they'd probably spot you from the bridge anyway since it's right there. :D

I remember that on the 2015 cruise. My cabin mate and I were sitting next to him on deck 12. He looked really messed up, then he took off his shoes, socks, then shirt, and his pants. We were like "WTF is this guy doing!" but then came the shocker, he flung off his man-panties and climbed on the other side of the railing. I was just about to save his life when a much "faster" German fellow grabbed him and flipped him back over edge, it was actually pretty impressive. Security took that guy away after that. I actually thought I was going to watch a man die.
