    Unidentified Celebrities

    by IronTom » Wed Oct 18, 2017 10:44 am

Hi, newbie here cruising in 2018...

Curious to know how many people on board have direct ties to the music or production businesses. Like what percentage of sailors are just fans vs. people that are musicians or producers, or part of some production crew.

To put it another way, how often will I be rubbing elbows at the dinner table or in the elevator with someone I would or maybe should recognize?

A lot of fans are in the media, are local promoters, or in bands themselves. Allegaeon were survivors long before they played this year.

You could run into "big names" anywhere you go. I ran into Tomi from Amorphis was at the bar when I bought a drink in 2015, and Nergal in the Windjammer. Jonne from Korpiklaani ran at me down the hallway once. Hell, I saw John "TotalBiscuit" Bain at the bar in February, didn't realise it until he started chatting with his friend as he was leaving.

A point to the newbies on this front too.

Bands and crew have special wristbands - so if you are not sure check their wrist. If they are wearing an official looking 70K one then they are most likely either a crewmember or band member :)

And of course, if you DO recognize someone from a band or the "biz," be tactful and think before you approach them. With 60 bands onbroad and an average of (say) 4 or 5 people in each band, that's approaching 10% of the total number of fans onbroad, so the odds are pretty high you'll encounter some famous faces.

While "on this cruise there's no such thing as a backstage pass," there are times when you shouldn't approach band members -- while they're eating is one such time -- and there are times when they're likely to be more open, like when they hop into a hot-tub next to you.

The tip about wristbands is greatly appreciated!

I try to give people space when and where appropriate, of course. The wristbands will help identify whose who in the sea of black shirts. :D

Please don't be offended if you're famous and I absolutely don't recognize you, I live under a rock! ;)

This. People learned the "hard way" that Nergal did NOT want to be bothered while he was eating, and I think someone got up in Cronos' face while he was in the bathroom one year.

Good advice Pellaz, I totally agree with you. Give people their space and be polite.

But the cruise is promoted as having an "All-Access backstage pass" right on the main page. They need to qualify that in the FAQ or somewhere. Don't be a dick-head or something like that, haha!

Im absolutely terrible with recognizing people. I've shared elevators and beers with Herman Li and chatted with a few other people from various bands. a solid 90% of the time i dont even know they are in one of the bands (has even happened with bands on the same label as us). Just talk to everyone like you would normally, regardless of if they are in a band or have a wristband or not. You'll make some very awesome friends. Also, the sit down restaurant you may get seated at a table with a band member, but thats all by chance.

My rule is I don't bother band members or "biz" people if they are...

    1) Eating or at the buffet with a plate

    2) If they have their kids with them (don't think that has happened on the boat though) or having a "moment" with a significant other.

    3) They are in or heading towards the bathroom

    4) Are walking like they have some place to be.

    5) When they are getting ready to hit the stage, obviously.

If you use some common sense it can be pretty easy to tell when it is ok to approach them vs when you should leave them alone.

Now as far as running into them on the boat. Met up with Michael Schenker in Jamaica during the port call. Rode with Sean Tibbetts from Kamelot in the elevator from the pool deck right after he got off stage. Ate dinner one night next to Christofer Johnsson from Therion in the main dining room. Ran into Joey Belladonna and Frank Bello from Anthrax on the beach in Haiti. Hung out with Kai Hansen from Gamma Ray (Helloween) in the casino. Also hung out with Peavy Wagner and Manni Schmidt from Refuge (Rage) in the casino. Helped Eddy Garcia, drummer for Overkill last year, stack cups on a passed out cruiser in The Labyrinth. Partied with George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher from Cannibal Corpse and didn't realize who he was at first since I am not a fan of his band. Watched Jag Panzer with Jon Schaffer from Iced Earth. Had to fight members of Ghost Ship Octavius for position at the barrier during Uli Jon Roth...whom I also spent time with in the Schooner Bar. Plus many more encounters with people I recognized and some I probably didn't!

So far, UMC hasn't had to add such a disclaimer -- thank the gods! -- and I hope they never have to. 70K might be unique in that the number of bands booked is large, the variety of bands is diverse, and so are the fans onbroad. While there have been some famous and unmistakeable faces onbroad -- think Scotty Ian -- for the most part, the bands are "much like us." It gives this cruise a great atmosphere, whereas cruises with fewer, but bigger-name bands can't be quite as "open access" as 70K. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Most everyone I've met has been extremely polite and respectful of celebrities and each other. Well, maybe except maybe 1 or 2 in 3 years. If you mix enough alcohol and fan frenzy you'll occasionally hear of bad experiences or people being just plain stupid.

The key, so far, has been "occasionally."
And as I've witnessed, if a band-member is a dick to a fan onbroad, members of other bands might just roll their eyes and make fun of that band-member.

    Same here.

This is a pretty good list. :beerbang:
Even if a band-member is outside of those scenarios, I probably wouldn't go beyond a shy smile of acknowledgement or a thumbs-up toward them, generally.

I've shared hot-tubs with several bands including InsOmnium Gatherum, shared an airport shuttle with Riot V, shared an elevator with Ralf from Primal Fear...and I've enjoyed those happy little cupcakes with Christofer from Therion and Orion from Behemoth.

Regarding bands eating. Last cruise I ate dinner with Marcello Barbosa from Angra last year. He was sitting there eating and I just asked if I could join. We had a good chat. Really nice guy. The year before I ate pizza and drank beer with Serpent from Belphegor. Also a really cool guy behind the evil black metal persona.

It seems a decent place to chat with bands is at the bars in the promenade. Usually around the bar. Last year one of the best fan experience is running into Joey Belladonna. He seemed just as excited to meet the fans as the other way around. He was really engaged in who the fans are, where they're from and all that.

In 2016 the only guy I was nerding out about meeting was Jon Schaffer (Iced Earth) lucky enough I kept it together. He liked that I had a Gadsden flag on my jacket so we had a bit of a chat about American history.

I've never had a bad experience from a band member, because I'm pretty damn polite with my fandom. I don't care about selfies or autographs. I generally tell people that I really like their music and I thank them for making it, great show, etc. Nobody responds negatively to that. If people want to talk more after that, it's pretty easy to tell, and if they want to get back to whatever they're doing, I let them.

Henjo from Gamma Ray once complimented my GR shirt while he was eating pizza, so I took that as an invitation to join him and tell him how I named my dog after him. I was drunk and he was cool.

In general, just don't be a dick and you'll have good experiences. The promo literature says you get to hang out with everyone, but it doesn't say that anyone will want to hang out with you if you're causing a scene or being annoying. :)
I'm only here to do two things: play the bagpipes and gargle sulphuric acid. Looks like we're almost out of acid.

I have had a few requests to add this feature directly to the 70K Bands app, but so far have declined to do so.

    1) It would have to be manually populated and maintained. (Something I try and avoid, though if a reliable volunteer wanted to provide all data, that might work)
    2) It would require a lot of UI tweaking to add it in without creating a bunch of clutter
    3) It 'could' change the dynamic of the cruise and instead of a small percentage recognizing people, we would have a much larger percentage of people recognizing the artists. This 'could' lead to more issues with annoying fanboy encounters.

I am probably never going to do this because of reason 1 and 2, but I would worry about 3 if I did go ahead with this.

Ya gotta figure if band people are hanging out on the Promenade enjoying libations and looking approachable, they're probably open to chatting. This was the case with Dani Filth two years ago.
After all, they COULD be drinking somewhere else more quiet and out of sight; heck it IS the "promenade" after all.

That's awesome. I hadn't heard that about Joey (although it doesn't surprise me) and Anthrax is one of the bigger "names" ever to appear on the boat.

There actually was a thread like this back in the early days of the cruise.

I agree with 1, 2 and 3. Please, never program anything which could hurt any band's privacy.

We had a good chat. Really nice guy. The year before I ate pizza and drank beer with Serpent from Belphegor. Also a really cool guy behind the evil black metal persona.

I agree. A couple years ago I had breakfast with the guys from Skalmold a couple times and had really nice chats. They were super cool and friendly about that. Last year I also had a really good chat at the Windjammer with Alea from Saltatio.

Just be nice and use your common sense when approaching band members.

Last year one of the best fan experience is running into Joey Belladonna. He seemed just as excited to meet the fans as the other way around. He was really engaged in who the fans are, where they're from and all that.

Agreed, Joey was awesome. Ran into him in the hallway headed back to my cabin, and he was probably the nicest celebrity I've ever met. Told him that Anthrax was my first real concert 25 years ago, and by his reaction, you would have thought that was the greatest thing he'd ever heard. He seemed genuinely interested in a conversation, asking me all sorts of questions about where I was from, family, etc. I saw him a bunch of other times on the boat, and he looked to be having similar conversations with random people. Just a really good dude all around.

Also, don't be a creep when talking with female band members. We sat at a table in Windjammer near the singer for Xandria last year, and saw multiple dudes trying to give her these awful, awkward pickup lines as she's trying to eat breakfast. She was nice about it, but it was just awkward as hell.

    Don't be that guy.
