    Wacken?

    by Bob » Tue Aug 02, 2016 3:23 pm

Is Wacken the holy grail of all metal festivals? Been watching the FB feeds and the excitement is building.

Just curious if many from 70K are going to Wacken this week? I always see lots of Wacken shirts onboard.

Got to say I'm not much into mud fests. But it's on my bucket list.

It certainly is the mecca of metal festivals - quite a few of my friends from Australia go to it.

Definitely not for me - like you, I'm not into mud-fests  That's why I love 70k.

But I have zero interest in attending Wacken. Too big, too muddy. I've done a few of the smaller European festivals (Bang Your Head in Germany, Sweden Rock, and Rockwave in Athens) and they are much more to my liking.

I went to Wacken back in 2009. I had a blast but there are way too many people. The campground got pretty disgusting by the end of the fest. Make sure you claim a spot on high ground when you get there. :|

I'd say it's certainly worth the pilgrimage once, but I don't think I'll go back.

Around here, people are just as willing to answer 70k as they are Wacken. Though typically, they go to both, as they fulfill different things.

I like 70k because I enjoy being clean. And if I don't feel clean, I can pop back to my room and take a shower. That's less doable when you're out camping.

Wacken seems like it would be really fun, but 70k has the family appeal to it for me. Getting lost in a crowd in a place like Wacken seems very easy. In 70k you're going to chat and make friends with people anywhere you may go, and you're likely to see them at your chosen shows.

People nowadays seem to go to Wacken just to be there and not because of the bands. If you like to see some good bands and still want to attend a big ass festival, go to something like Summer Breeze instead.

I try and stay clear of events that attract "casual metalheads" (you know, people who used to listen to some of the more popular bands in the 80's but have since "grown up" and are now going just to hear that one good song), so you won't be seeing me at an Iron Maiden stadium gig or Black Sabbath/Kiss/whatever n'th last tour - or at Wacken.

It absolutely is! I've just returned. Unlike anything you'll ever experience. You must go at least once.

I couldn't do Wacken again though. I would have to say 70K is better for me. You don't need to tramp through mud on the cruise ship.

    Wacken used to be great. I went in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007

Best years were 2000-2003. 2004-2007 the festival was not fun/goodl because too crowded and trendy.

I would rather go to Party San Open Air or Brutal Assault personally

I just did Brutal Assault and it was freaking awesome! A couple of my Canadian buddies went to Wacken'016 before meeting me at Brual fest. Funny that every sentence they started with: "This is so much better than Wacken.. "

As mentioned earlier, I'd say if you wanna see bands and not just do "the thing" SummerBreeze, Metal Days and Brutal Assault are much better options. Personally, I'm aiming at Metal Days'017 next :beerwink:

A friend that went to every single Wacken since 2003 describes Wacken as being "the metal Disneyland: cheesy as fuck, way too expensive, way too much people but you go there for the atmosphere, not so much for the attractions".
I've only been there in 2003 and it was fantastic, but since then the capacity went overboard, and now if you don't get there early enough, you can literally walk miles to go from your tent to the stages. Personal opinion: you have way better fests in Europe, it's been years since Hellfest in France is better than Wacken for me.
I need to do Brutal Assault too, one of these years.

Wacken is great. I've been there in 2016 for the first time after 18 years of waiting... And it was a fucking good experience. Not sure if Im going again someday, possibly yes, and I think every metalhead should go there at least once. Lineup was awesome and it wasnt so muddy as I thought it would be.

Wacken is an awesome festival and I would recommend any metalhead who has not made the pilgrimage to do so. I have been 4 times now, however I can attest to the fact that it probably isn't as good as the first year I went (2010). But like anything the novelty of it wears off especially after going 3 years consecutively.
2010 was a great year because of the line up and it was relatively dry.
2011 was pretty decent as well.
2012 was a mess because of the mud. It took almost 30 minutes to walk from main stage to the tent stages. Walking around the shopping areas were just not feasible because it took forever.
2014 was my least enjoyable year, even though it was the 20th anniversary. I think with some of the changes to the layout of the festival it just felt too large at this point (even though every year I went attendance was the same).

Its funny I look back on the lineup for the 4 years I have gone and see so many bands that I like now and didn't know existed back then. If I only knew them than maybe my experiences could have been even better?

I am planning on making another trip come 2019 for the 25th Anniversary.

One festival I must recommend other than Wacken is Metal Days. Its a much more intimate experience (only 12000 people), nestled in the beautiful mountains of Slovenia. The country side is so lush and green and the river is such a nice place to relax. Its an amazing contrast between Wacken and Metal Days. Metal Days the festival grounds were still bright and green at the end of a week. Wacken everything was dead and yellow.

Just about everyone I know that's been to Wacken says the same thing: it's gotten too big for it's own good. I've never been, but I've been to Summer Breeze (2014 & 2015) and Party.San (2015) and both were a great time. That said, Wacken's lineup is pretty nice this year and I want to go just once to say I went, so I'll probably be going. I won't be camping though, there's only certain fests I'm willing to camp at.

Wacken was ok. Crowdsurfing over the entire audience for maiden all the way to the railing was an amazing experience.

Also saw some guy covered in pasta sauce get his ass shaved, that night he got arrested while naked and set his pubes on fire. Had a burning American flag tattooed on him. Very entertaining but not an asshole like Calvin.

Damn crowd surfers! At the Blind Guardian set when I got mud on my arms I would wipe the mud on asshole's clothes as they pushed their way past me.

I was never at Wacken and I don't want because it's too big, too expensive and for me too much carnival. The biggest festivals for were the Dynamos 1995 - 1997. That time I really liked it. Now I won't, because too much crowd.

My favorites are Summer Breeze and Metaldays.
