Last couple Wheel of Time books were great IMO, it made up for the plodding middle books.

I was just about to ask Jake what the names of those Malazan books were, they seemed to be highly recommended. I read The Strain yesterday, that was good. I started Name of the Wind this morning but I'm going camping this weekend and it'll have to wait a bit.

on book 6, just loving it, i can barely put the book down
and i rather have some slower book but know what is going on than just rush from event to event and end up with books that barely make sense.

I've picked this up and read the first few chapters every couple of years for the past decade or so... today I brought it into work knowing it would be a slow day and started it yet again. Can't say exactly what it is that's prevented me from finishing it all these years, I guess it just isn't immediately gripping like the author's Necroscope series. I've never really gotten in deep enough to give it a fair chance, though. I'm determined to finish it this time.

Done with Elantris and The Emperor's Soul. Now reading Gardens of the Moon, following Jake's (constant) recommendations. I feel a little bit overwhelmed, to be honest.

Haha.. yeah I have been doing the recommendation thing a lot.

As I've said before as well, you're definitely gonna feel overwhelmed for a bit. It's a big world to be put into and a steep learning curve where you're in the dark for a while, and the first book is by far the shakiest (while the rest of the series is consistent in how awesome it is).

The goodreads scores are indicative of such, as the first book has a score of 3.8/5, and books 2-10 all fall within the range of 4.2-4.4/5.

    Good luck, dude!

I highly doubt I will get into Wheel of Time; my reasoning being that I despise when a series loses momentum, and that has been the most often repeated criticism I hear about it. (Another reason why I kept going with Malazan, because the series stays exciting and ridiculous all the way through)

I do have the way of kings sitting in my bookshelf, so perhaps I will give that a go! I have never read anything by Sanderson. How is mistborn?

I think I'm ready to get started. I finished the third book in the Witcher series, only to find that the fourth hasn't been translated yet.

This book and the two following books 'Shield of thunder' and 'fall of kings' make a very awesome trilogy on the story of Troy.

I recommend these, and the author David Gemmell. Easy reading, not exactly genius from a literary point of view but holy shit the character building and brutal reality/fantasy mixing is awesome. This guy spins a good yarn. Also recommend his Drenai series and rigante series which I'm half way through.

I hear you about a series losing its momentum, but in all fairness Sanderson brought that series back on track to its roots, so it was well worth it for me to pick it up again. I actually recommend skipping book ten. A complete waste of time.

Finally finished A Memory of Light last night. I have to agree with you...could not have asked for a better ending. I hate to say this but Robert Jordan's death may have ended up being a good thing as far as Wheel of Time was concerned. Brandon Sanderson really brought new life to it with the last 3 books.

Thanks to viathyn's recommendation I am now starting on Steven Erikson's Gardens of the Moon.

Careful. I just started that one, and a few pages in, I saw references to earlier books. Case in point:

"Prominent among these were the Crimson Guard, under the command of Prince K'azz D'Avore (see Volumes III & V);"

Does that mean there are at least five earlier volumes?

Don't worry that's definitely the first book in the series. It was written 10 years before all the other ones.

Erikson does this thing where he writes poems and story excerpts at the beginning of every chapter, and my takeaway from them is that they are supposed to be from the compiled related literatures surrounding the events that happen within the entire scope of the series, from long after the story has concluded. Don't read too deeply into these poems and such... because I've found most of them have no profound impact on the general events of the story, except in reference.

As a hypothetical example, some of the poems may be taken from a book called "The life and teachings of **Insert 'X' character's name here**". Said hypothetical character[s] may or may not survive the series, may or may not appear at all, but the general message of the poem of paragraph or whatever, is supposed to be somewhat tonally relevant to the happenings in the upcoming chapter.

I think it's mostly just Erikson... musing.

    I just finished malazan...

    Oh... man..

The devastation. I feel hollow and harrowed. FUCK me, that ending has left me pretty raw.

I'm sitting down already, but that doesn't quell the feeling of... needing to sit down. haha.

Bravo, mr Erikson, bra-fucking-vo. That was the longest series I've ever read... possibly the longest tragedy ever written. I need a drink.

I think we might need a separate thread for Malazan soon! The ending of Gardens was great.

Just started reading Gardens as well. Really like it so far.

It's going a bit slowly for me. Granted, Viathyn did say it starts out that way. Everything's a bit too bleak at the moment, before I even had a chance to get invested in the characters. I'm eagerly awaiting the moment I can jump back in time to before everything was all doom and gloom so I can learn why I'm supposed to care about these characters.

Last novel I bought was "The Ice Room" by Emily Alice Ovenden (lead singer of the UK metal band Pythia).

Haven't read it yet but shall be taking it with me to the US to read on the plane :)

Right now I'm reading "Ida y Vuelta" (back and forth) which is correspondence between Juan Villoro (one of my favorite contemporary Mexican writers) and Martín Caparrós (a great Argentinian journalist) during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Basically they kept correspondence via e-mail while Villoro was in Mexico City and Caparrós was going from one place to another with his work (Cairo, Alexandria, Johannesburg, Uganda...). Very entertaining if you like Football.

I just started reading "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying". Definitely a poor choice for my first day back in work, since it basically begins by mocking the western idea of working your butt off and being too preoccupied with your future.

I talked with my mother about it and she assured me this isn't simply YOLO the book, but early on, it definitely feels like I'm being preached to by the cast from Reality Bites, rather than by a renowned Tibetan monk. At best, I can see it encouraging me to work on self-improvement and self-awareness. I've read books of a similar nature, and I know it's good to at least be aware of the present while you're in it. Hopefully that's where this is headed.

    "The Heavy Metal Bible"

Written by a brazillian comedian called Bruno Sutter, he plays the role of a heavy metal singer called Detonator in a band called Massacration.

"La Carta Esférica" - Arturo Pérez-Reverte. I really like this author although I haven't read as many of his books as I would like (haven't found most). Only at page 87 now, and it seems it's building up slow, but it should be good!

Just got a Kindle, and I have been checking out the free e-books on it. Right now, I have The Idiot, Moby Dick, and The Kalevala in queue to read.

I just read The Name Of The Wind and The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss. It's a brilliant series so far, and I can't wait to see where it goes from here.
