Words of wisdom to live by

    by viathyn » Thu Mar 10, 2011 3:47 pm

Heard this gem from Gary Busey:
"There are two rules you need to live by in life. One: Never pet a burning dog and Two: Never cook bacon naked."

Just read this guy on the internet... may try on someone I hate
"Give a man a fire and he's warm for the night. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life!"

'I get drunk one night and my hangover lasts two weeks, so I just stay drunk for two weeks and only have a hangover for one night'." -- Johnny Cash, 1987

"The only black magic Sabbath ever got into was a box of chocolates." -- Ozzy Osbourne, 1983   hmm...more a quote than words of wisdom..but still ;)

I knew there was a thread like this somewhere - found it on page 12!

Anyway, here are a few I came across in the past 24 hours that I like a lot. The second is from a book I checked out from the library and started reading last night - really great! The author verbalizes a lot of things I've felt that I've intuitively known for a long time.

The road to success is lined with many tempting parking spaces.

From the first few pages of the book The Road Less Traveled by M. Scott Peck..... (I hadn't looked at this book in a long time, but happened to pull it off my bookshelf at home this morning - really like a lot of what he says)

    Life is difficult.

This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths.* It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend it. Once we truly know that life is difficult - once we truly understand and accept it - then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.

Most do not fully see this truth that life is difficult. Instead they moan more or less incessantly, noisily or subtly, about the enormity of their problems, their burdens, and their difficulties as if life were generally easy, as if life should be easy. They voice their belief, noisily or subtly, that their difficulties represent a unique kind of affliction that should not be and that has somehow been especially visited upon them, or else upon their families, their tribe, their class, their nation, their race or even their species, and not upon others. I know about this moaning because I have done my share.

Life is a series of problems. Do we want to moan about them or solve them? Do we want to teach our children to solve them?

Discipline is the basic set of tools we require to solve life’s problems. Without discipline we can solve nothing. With only some discipline we can solve only some problems. With total discipline we can solve all problems.

What makes life difficult is that the process of confronting and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, evoke in us frustration or grief or sadness or loneliness or guilt or regret or anger or fear or anxiety or anguish or despair. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain, sometimes equaling the very worst kind of physical pain. Indeed, it is because of the pain that events or conflicts engender in us all that we call them problems. And since life poses an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.

Yet it is in this whole process of meeting and solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the cutting edge that distinguishes between success and failure. Problems call forth our courage and our wisdom; indeed, they create our courage and our wisdom. It is only because of problems that we grow mentally and spiritually. When we desire to encourage the growth of the human spirit, we challenge and encourage the human capacity to solve problems, just as in school we deliberately set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of confronting and resolving problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Those things that hurt, instruct.” It is for this reason that wise people learn not to dread but actually to welcome problems and actually to welcome the pain of problems.

*The first of the “Four Noble Truths” which Buddha taught was "Life is suffering.”

....there is much more of course, but that's all I care to transcribe at the moment. :P

    tl;dr

    Just kidding!

I've actually read the book a couple times and believe it to be one of the best guides to a deeper, richer life available to human beings. Too bad the heights to which it inspires one to aspire are so incredibly damn lofty and (imho) unattainable. Still, one could do worse than use its contents as a guide toward self-awreness and/or improvement. Keep in mind, I've said the same things about the bible
So far at least, 2011, 2012 & 2015 were enough for me
    :shred:Book 'em ANDO!! :headbanger:

Yep on all counts. I've read it all the way through at least 3 times, and pick it up every so often to re-read certain parts. But, you are absolutely right that the goals are so lofty that they are unattainable.... I think that's ok though because like any goal, if you shoot really, really high - and don't make it, maybe you get somewhere close and that's  ....and you just keep trying and do the best you can.

I think the Peck book was the first I ever read of that type - in my early 20s or so. Besides Peck, I really like the writings of Jack Kornfield, Deepak Chopra (who I was thrilled to meet at a book talk last year!), and Andrew Weil. I discovered Jack Kornfield just a few years ago and he has become my favorite. http://www.jackkornfield.com/
