Anyone seen it yet? I saw it last night in 3D HFR (High Fucking Resolution?). It absolutely blew my mind. I'll watch it again saturday evening AND I CAN'T WAIT.

YES. This is one of the few movies that are actually worth watching in 3D.

Also, the soundtrack is fucking epic. I WANT TO WATCH IT AGAIN!!! :bitch: :bitch: :bitch:

I was hearing in some pre-screenings people were getting nausea and headaches from watching the 3D version. Something about it being filmed at 48 frames per second compared to the standard 24. Well regardless I can't wait to see it. I read that book probably close to 20 times now. It will always be my favorite (even over Lord of the Rings). Definitely seeing it in 2D though. Because I wear glasses and can't wear contacts the 3D glasses just get damn annoying, and I hate the look of 3D movies.

It was amazing! I also watched it in HFR 3D on a Titan XC screen, the thought of 2D didn't even cross my mind, I want the full experience, and 3D looks awesome, my choice was either 3D or might as well just wait for the DVD to watch it in 2D. Epic soundtrack and special effects beyond anything I've ever seen! I especially enjoyed the stone giant fight. Peter Jackson and his team at Weta are hands down the best in the business.

Perfect!!! I think I had multiple nerdgasms during the movie. Hell I was even reciting a lot of the lines. Peter Jackson did an amazing job. I would even go so far as to say its early exact to the book. I don't enjoy any movie in 3D so I did the 2D version. I can't say enough good things about it. I think I will go see it again

I saw/read two reviews so far - and in both it was criticized that with the 48 frames per second, you could actually see that the dwarfs "make-up"...

I still don't know how the dwarfs will work on me; when the first pictures were revealed, I wasn't too happy, because half of'em look way too "comicy" and the other half more or less human...

I'll probably start with 2D and then 3D/48 the second time

Still haven't taken the time to go see it, which for me is weird.

Will very likely see it on Monday though.

Think I'll do three versions all in all:
    2D
    3D
    3D HFR
(though likely only one on Monday)

Since I have to see it at the cinema a few times anyhow, might as well see what differs between the various techinques as well.

Just learned that it's being done in 3 parts.

Will likely boycott it based no that. Total bullshit money grab. LOTR was WAY too long and drawn out but at least it could be justified as it was based on 3 books.

I swore if I had to sit through one more weepy-eyed, homoerotic hobbit scene before I died, I'd walk right up and start tearing holes in the movie screen so I guess I'd best take a pass on this

Too bad cuz I was actually looking forward to a great story being told in a single sitting.

The LotR movies also left out the majority of the books. The hobbit is the book nothing really obvious left out. The first movie covers about 6 chapters of the book

What movies aren't money grabs these days? The film industry is a business, the purpose of which is to make money. So if that is your only reason for boycotting it, you may as well boycott cinema completely. I didn't think the Lord of the Rings was long and drawn out at all, infact they left out a lot of material, scenes they could have filmed, but that would have needed 3 extra films as The Lord of the Rings is actually 6 books divided into 3 volumes (Fellowship, Two Towers, Return...) THAT would have been long and drawn out.
The Hobbit was originally going to be 2 films, but they realised when reviewing the first cut that they'd left a lot of the story untold, from the appendices, the story of Bilbo, the dwarves of Erebor and the rise of the Necromancer etc. And the difference between PJ and any other film maker, is that he's actually a great fan of LOTR, and waited 20 years for someone to film it, but became impatient so he took it on himself. So I have faith that he's doing the right thing, and knows what he's doing, from a fans perspective, he's telling the story how he'd want to see it himself if someone else were to be making it, and not leave valuable parts of the story untold.

Any book over 500 pages could be turned into 5 films if you want to try to include every single detail in the movie but that's what books are for. Movie's are meant to tell the story in a different way and (for me at least) get me in and out in (one sitting) under 3 hours. Sure, lots was left out of LOTR but also much was drawn way the hell out and the thing bored me to tears for the most part. I hated it and was really hoping the Hobbit would be done in what I believe would be the 'proper' way. But hey, that's just my opinion. I'm sure the films will be loved by millions just as the LOTR ones were. I'm just not a fan of this approach. Once all 3 are out, I'll watch 'em on dvd and I'm sure they'll be decent but I'm not gonna join the millions in forking out over $50 to do so in the theaters.

I'm not talking about including every single detail, that's ridiculous, that would mean an entire series of 30+ 3hour long films, I'm talking about important parts of the story.. not every little detail. I know what books are for, but a filmmaker still has the job of interpreting a book into a storyboard that works. LOTR is too big and too special of a project for them to just take random chunks and throw together a half assed hour and a half film. They did very well with what they chose to add without compromising the story line. I suppose they could have made it less "drawn out" and more like this to please the likes of you

And HOLY CRAP it costs over $50 to see a film there? No wonder they complain about film piracy, I'd seriously reconsider going to films if I had to pay that much too. What a rip off! I could see The Hobbit 3 times here, and still not pay that much...

I think he's associating it with all 3 movies combined. Costs about $15 to see the movie in 3D. So for all three it's $45 plus taxes and you are probably goin to buy overpriced crap at the theater too

I never buy anything at a theatre other than the price of admission, in my experience eating during a movie doesn't enhance the experience at all, I can sit down at home and watch a movie without eating so I don't see why I should do it at a theatre. But if I do, I sneak my own snacks in.

Yeah, I was talking about going 3 times and, of course, over the course of several years (ugh)

And I wasn't saying that LOTR should have been squished into one movie, I said it made sense to have it in 3 as it was 3 books. The hobbit was one book. To stretch a single book into 3 films, for me and in my opinion (not expecting you or anyone to agree), that's just an unnecessary, greedy cash grab so I won't be seeing it until all 3 are out on DVD. I still remember how annoyed and disappointed I was leaving the theater after The Return of the King and don't wanna risk subjecting myself to that again. To all you who intend to see each of 3 movies 2 or 3 times, I hope each is as awesome or more so than the one before it.

In that case if you want films to be done "by the book" it would make more sense to have 6 films, as it was 6 books, each volume consisting of 2 books each. I don't see them "stretching" The Hobbit into 3 films, as someone already stated, the first film covered about the first 6 chapters, and didn't feel stretched at all, and I think with the 3 films they're also covering a bit of back story from the appendices and explaining some of the origins of the Necromancer, the dwarves etc.. which is NOT included in the book. Tolkiens expansive world of Middle Earth is not your average story that can just be squished into one movie. You may get away with it with many other other books, but with The Hobbit and LOTR there's a lot tell, so I don't see it as being a greedy "cash grab" I don't think that's what it's about at all, but a necessary way to tell key stories.

I guess you won't understand until the DVDs come out...

And I'm not an obsessed fan, as much as I enjoyed The Hobbit seeing it once is enough for me. But I will see it again when it comes out on DVD.

I saw it in 3D HFR and I kinda wish I hadn't. I don't know what it was but it kinda made it feel cheap, like I was watching a war documentary on history channel. Hard to describe but it didn't really feel like it was the same quality of production as the LOTR trilogy. Once I got used to it it was awesome though. It was definitely more kidsy than LOTR, and I realize that the book was the same way. I think people who read the book will enjoy it a lot more. It was nice to see Gandalf actually putting his magic to good use a lot more frequently than LOTR  . I plan on seeing it again in 2d just to see if I have the same kind of problem as I had with the 3DHFR. I can't wait for the next one to come out now that introductions are out of the way  That felt a little dragged out, before they got on the road. But that's just me, like I said I didn't read the book so I have a completely different experience than those who have.

making three movies is even less mainstream - because a lot of those who don't love Tolkien's work are probably gonna be bored be the first hour of the movie and will not return for part two and three
(still haven't watched it, but in all the reviews I read/saw, they said that the first hour was very slow)

The cinema you saw it at may need to upgrade their equipment, maybe? Filming at 48 FPS is pretty revolutionary, it's never been done before, some monitors may not be able to handle the High Fucking Resolution :P therefore making it look cheap 'Cause I certainly didn't get that feeling when I saw it, I thought the production was incredible and a step up from LOTR and Weta has clearly come a long way with their special effects technology. I can understand the introduction scene being drawn out, it was kinda long but it was amusing and entertaining so I don't have any complaints about that.

Plus there are too many epic battles in The Hobbit to cram them all into one movie. There's the battle with the trolls, the battle with goblins in the cave, spiders in Mirkwood, the five armies, the battle with Smaug etc. They could do it, but then there wouldn't be any character or plot developments, which is essential in making a good film. Otherwise it would just be a series of pointless battles, the end result being a crap film. Fans of The Hobbit and LOTR would be disappointed if that happened, theres no doubt about it, they'd be let down. I have 100% faith that as filmmakers and fans of the books themselves, they know what's best. Can't wait to see them all! :D

just got back from seeing it in 3D HFR and all i can say is holy fucking hell that was hands down the most visually stunning movie i have ever seen. Peter Jackson has in my mind the best eye in the world for making something that is just EPIC in scale. The 48FPS really shines through on the fight scenes and the 3D is stunning and never feels "forced". This is one of those movies i feel sorry for those of you who choose not to view it in 3D as i personally think a lot of the scenes will lose the power that they carry with them because of the scale of everything. Now for the movie review its self GO FUCKING SEE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! you will be doing yourself a disservice by skipping this on the big screen unless of course you have a 80ft TV at home in which case invite me over when this is on blue ray. I have never read the book that this is based on just as i had never read the Lord of the Rings series before those movies now i shall sit down and read it in a sitting and see what they missed if anything. But since Jackson left out so little of the LotR series i figure he will do the same with these movies and i cannot wait to go see The Hobbit again and again.once again GO SEE THE MOVIE!!!!!!!

Glad to hear it, especially after hearing that 3D can induce nausea. I don't want to have any seizures while I'm in Arizona.

I have never really considered watchign a movie in 3D.

For the conversation of taking a story and drawing it out over many films, you should see what they had to do in China for Romance of the Three Kingdoms  45 minute episodes, 84 in all to cover the novel.

Hm, yeah maybe there was an issue with the projector cus you guys seemed to have seen something completely different than what I saw haha. Now that I think about it it very well could have been an issue with the projector not having that high of a resolution. Maybe I'll go watch it again at a different theater that I know will have a high quality projector (Imax at Chinook, for the Calgarians). I'll also check it out in 2d probably just to see the diffference.

I will preface this comment with "Possible Spoilers". Can someone refresh my memory on the book. I don't recall their being an Orc hunting party prior to rivendell nor do I recall all the stuff done with Radaghast. Now if my memory is right these scenes could have been added. I think they went in flawlessly if that was the case.

My memory of The Hobbit novel is a bit sketchy, I'll have to read it again.. I think that's a good idea actually. I read LOTR before the first film came out, just for that reason, because I wanted to know the book first and compare them. I don't even remember but I think I read LOTR first.
