I had five quarter finalists right in the contest we have going at work (everyone submited their guesses before the first match), with Spain, Portugal and Uruguay instead of Costa Rica, Colombia and Belgium. Before today's matches, I was at 6th place of 38.

Missed the match today but read that the ref had no control? Also, Neymar in the hospital?

    Both.

Fernandinho was channeling his inner De Jong from the get go and should have been sent off by half at the latest - didn't receive a single card. Neymar took what looked like a running knee into his lower back.

Yikes. To be fair in your comparison, De Jong can escape being sent off too. More refereeing controversy is exactly what we need. Wonder if Neymar will be out against Germany.

Lol, you should have seen twitter. Nobody here is over that. I don't think anyone has ever been as hated as Robben is right now.

Also, this went from being a really weird world cup, to an incredibly predictable one. Ever since the round of 16 started, there hasn't been one surprising outcome. :|

He fielded a team with little to no defensive strength. None of Marcelo, Maicon, Bernard, or Hulk (the four "wide" men) are defensive players - which led to Germany having free reign to attack the flanks. Luis Gustavo - the supposed holding player - in the corners during open play? Idiocy. David Luiz is too erratic defensively. Dante hadn't seen a second as far as I know, "game rust". Paulinho/Fernandinho are hacks. Oscar needs somebody to play with.

My favorite stat? Fred's heat map was mostly a perfect circle in the center of the pitch

Yes, let's all forget that he led Brazil to world champions title in 2002. Other than that, Brazil got lucky with the draw to even get to semi-finals. It only took one serious team to properly dismantle them. Seriously, it took Germans more time to celebrate the goals than the time they needed to score consecutive goals

I hope the other charlatan team of this World Cup (Argentina) gets similar treatment today.

if holland beats argentina in same way germany did with brazil, this could very well be the most watched final ever.

and in a great anti-climax it's going to be a very boring game. it will be like chess. as both teams have similar playing styles

In my eyes, he fielded a team yesterday that didn't know how to defend. The four Brazilian "wide" players (Marcelo, Maicon, Bernard and Hulk) are all straight attackers - the Germans knew this and could easily expose the wide areas on the field to counter attack. Couple this with your holding midfielders (Luis Gustavo and Fernandinho) being beside the corner flags during open play? Idiocy. Then there's David Luiz, who for all the talent he has, severely lacks any positional discipline.

My favorite stat? Fred's heat map.

to bad. argentina was the more lucky one
holland played their worst game at the wrong moment :-(

however, i do have to say that this was the worst ref we had. luckily there were no "fouls" in the 16M area otherwise i wouldn't think it past the ref to give a penal.
giving huntelaar a yellow card for following messi, but when sneijder is almost being kicked out of the game it's not even a foul...

    I call it justice. :P

    Jk.

Seriously, though, I think the referee was kind of ok, but he was definitely too lenient with the cards. That kick to Sneijder was at least a yellow. And I think some dutchmen could have received a yellow card and didn't... The way I see it, Argentina should put a monument to Mascherano.

Also, apparently there were mexicans there with signs of #NoEraPenal. So this meme is here to stay, apparently.

Why didn't you shoot like that against us, Sneijder/MaxiRodríguez??!!

I like 3rd place games... Usually really entertaining. Of course, they are better when there was one unexpected guest in the semi-finals (like uruguay in 2010, Croatia in 1998, or Korea in 2002).

Just to throw it out there, Tiago Silva should have been sent off for the pk.

Should have been a red with no PK I thought. Looked like the hold ended just outside the box.

haven't seen many matches - quite a pity Switzerland only played 118 good minutes instead of 130 ;)

rooting for Germany, now - even though we'd never hear the end of it :D

Suppose I should clarify myself, was using the "pk" as a reference point, initial contact was most definitely outside the box.

Brazil looked like they really had no business being in the last two rounds, I bet Columbia would have made for better (tighter) entertainment.

Now to just watch the German machine steamroll Messi!

    Great job Germany!

Had to watch on taped delay and it was very difficult to avoid spoilers today. Somehow managed to do it.

Best team won, simple as that. Schweiny is an absolute warrior, motm for me.

Messi getting the golden boot was a joke, boy is he a moody little brat at the best of times...
