I actually like this announcement of good 1 known legendary band and 4 unknowns that I could care less about. This cruise already has WAY too many bands I want to watch (basically at 20) that it would be almost impossible if they added like 6 more. Definitely watching 1 full Exodus set though. Great live act even though I like to rip on Dukes........

Are You Ready For This MONSTROSITY?

    by Andy » Sat Nov 24, 2012 12:42 pm

We are heading for a luxury destination in the Bahamas. People will ask: "What is this big MONSTROSITY of blood drenched metal that is steaming towards us?" It's the BARGE TO HELL, The World's Most Extreme Metal Cruise!

As much as I would love that and squeal like a girl if they got announced, I thought we ruled them out due to Katatonia/Opeth's touring schedule. :(

I will be interested to see how the crowd reacts to Dukes, because Dukes is the classic "way too angry guy", and the cruise seems like it would be a much more laid back atmosphere that wouldn't be into the "way too angry guy" telling them to F off and all kill each other during and in between every song.

Wasn't Exodus on the first cruise? What was that like?

I'm not a big fan of this band, but I caught some of their set (on the first night I think it was), and I think he referred to the ship as "The Hate Boat" as opposed to....

Yeah, it may have come across angry, but it's metal! The band was in good spirits.

Don't take everything said from the stage literally. At the 2nd Mayhem festival, George Fisher said "If you don't stop throwing water at us, I'm gonna come down there and decapitate you, put your head in a UPS box, and send it to your parents". It's SCHTICK!

I've spoken with Rob Dukes a couple of times, and he's a great guy. Besides, he's a New York Rangers fan...he can't be all bad!

....I WANT HOCKEY BACK

Totally agree - I'd venture to guess that all that badass persona is their schtick and simply that (an act) for 99% of the badass performer types.* Haha - I bet a lot of them are even pussycats in their private lives (and I don't mean that as a put-down in any way ;) )

    * although no doubt there may be exceptions here & there, that is, guys who are real dicks or weirdos in real life ;)

Oh man, I caught a cold. Hoping it goes away completely by next Monday. One of my real fears about this cruise was that either I or my fiancee would get sick just before the ship departs.

Trust me, I understand that. I love Exodus (rwalters knows I'm a fanboy...I tried to argue with him that there is a "Big 5" of thrash metal bands and it includes Exodus, not just a "Big 4" of Megadeth/Slayer/Anthrax/Metallica ), and I think Dukes is great. I just think that type of frontman is perfect for the large festivals with a lot of 16-23 year olds in the crowd, but I'm not sure how well that fits at an intimate, laid back cruise where most of the patrons are older.

Yeah I see what you mean. The performance actually felt a little different than when I saw them with Arch Enemy a couple years ago. Maybe it was because of the reasons you mentioned ;) Exodus actually seemed to be one of the bands that enjoyed the cruise the most. They were all over karaoke every night and seemed really excited about it in interviews and stuff.

I'm sure Dukes is vastly different on stage compared to off stage, but that's not my point. I just wonder if he'll change his on stage persona given the environment on a cruise ship.

    Oh, I guess I misunderstood you a bit. ;)

You raise an interesting point about whether or not an artist's stage persona (and not just Dukes) changes at all because of the cruise environment. I would say no to that, having seen many of the 70k 2011 & 2012 bands before at other venues (big & small). If anything, I'd expect the artist to do their "schtick" (whatever it may be) to the max on the ship because there are some major fans/superfans of these bands onboard who spent a lot of money to be there; plus I think the bands themselves had such a kick-ass time, it seemed that everyone was super energetic & excited to be there and perform. Also, the fact that you're on a ship on the open seas makes it even more of a party/enjoy to the max kind of free for all atmosphere (which is so unbelievably AWESOME I think!!) :shred: :whisky: I would certainly hope that no artist would feel they have to "hold back" in any way.

I didn't see Exodus's first set, but heard from people Dukes wouldn't stop blabbing how they were the first band to play, like it make soooo uber cool.

That's his problem. He thinks he's cool and some crazy sick tough guy (maybe he is a good fighter, I don't know or care). But his meathead antics on stage are laughable at best, and horrific at worst when you realize that he's fronting a band who had Baloff and Zetro as their prior singers.

This goes along with the point I was trying to make. I would imagine that most of the cruise-goers will be people like you who don't care for the "meathead"/"way too angry guy" persona and find it off-putting. But I could be wrong.

Didn't they say they'd do it every year they can? The quote was something along the lines of "We want to be the house band for this."

Oh man, this snippet made me imagine a ship-full of Kevins!!

jk Kevin - you know I'm crazy about you. :beerwink:

Sorry for the derail gajone...I do think that you have an interesting point/query...but, I'll stick with my first thought from a few posts ago, and add that I think most cruise-goers prioritize seeing the bands they really like and want to see in the first place, so a band feeling they have to cater to the random non-fan (who happens to be in the audience for some or all of a set) of a certain genre/style/antic/persona/whatever should be a total non-issue. That would be like thinking a black metal (my fave genre) band would tone down their schtick because the # of bm bands and bm fan base is smaller on the 70K cruises (at least this was true on the first two).
