She has social anxiety. Sometimes you can people, sometimes you can't. A friend chatted with her this year... in 2015 she had just spent a lot of time on tour and then spent 5 days trapped on a boat. She didn't have the recharge time she needed. This year, well she was able to have a great conversation with a friend of mine, and she said she was feeling much better.

Hang the fuck on, it's an anyone thing. ANYONE who gets mobbed by fans will do that. On a metal cruise, yeah the ladies will do it more because I'm not even famous and I'VE had a couple really uncomfortable interactions at shows. But Venom guy (Cronos?) had fans bug him while he was on the loo, and Nergal reportedly does not like being bugged when he's eating.

Geez, don't have a fit! Yes, it is an anyone thing but considering the ratio of famous females to famous males aboard the ship and male fans in general, the (famous) females are severely outnumbered. All I'm saying is that the females tend to try to avoid the mobbing to begin with by making themselves scarce.

I would not bug band members while they're eating. In saying that though, on the first cruise I managed to sit down at the Windjammer with Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth. I can't remember how that happened..

Haha!

Band/fan interaction 2017:

Alea der Bescheidene - Saltatio Mortis: A+, He was everywhere, so friendly and easy to chat up, take a selfie with, etc.
Alissa White-Gluz - Arch Enemy: F-, I don't know, maybe she was busy.

RE: Alissa White-Gluz.. It's a female thing. They hide so as not to be mobbed by fans. Simone did the same thing and then whenever she WAS around the ship, Oliver was by her side.

In saying that I frequently saw Lori Lewis (Therion) and Anette Olzon (Nightwish) around the ship. Linnea Vikstrom (Therion) was also about the ship as her Instagram suggests. I imagine Cristina Scabbia was also seen a bunch too, she doesn't seem like the type to hide in her stateroom.

Alissa and Simone both definitely don't want to be bothered ever.

Cristina Scabbia is always awesome, I've known her for 16 years and she's never changed. Linnea Vikstrom is also awesome, after meeting her on 70K she actually came out and spent the day with me when I went to Stockholm back in April.

The girls from Delain were also really cool and had a blast at many shows. I really hope to have them back onbroad.

Yeah dude, the Delain ladies are always awesome. Dianne Van Giersbergen is really cool too.

Getting a photo with Simone made me feel like I was committing photo rape. I told her to have a safe flight when we were in the airport and she looked at me like she was hoping my plane would crash.

Lol I forgot about Salatio Mortis guy, I don't remember the set but I saw him one afternoon on the pool deck jamming the fuck out to whatever band was playing.

Oh right, language barrier. Good point. I'm sure the Guyze in the band have at least a limited use of English. Enough to say "thank you" and "we are gyze" and "this next song is called..."

Two years ago the singer from Krisiun was struggling to put together a sentence so he threw in "fucking" in the middle of each sentence. (Actually that's just like Corey Taylor from Slipknot...)

Anyway, Gyze is gonna be over as fuck, I guarantee.

All Japanese people take English from at least middle school, first year. And often with a native speaker in the room, it is a big exchange program called JET that does this. But Japanese people do tend to be shy about English.

It was a few days after public booking started near the end of August.

First gap of any more than a couple of days was 9 days end-July, early August.
We then got another 10 bands steadily released before a huge break of four months that lasted from mid August through to just before xmas.
Upcoming Gigs:
Oct Alice-Cooper
Would literally take all of these to get me back in 2018

The ladies of Crucified Barabara - 2015 were all very accessible and friendly. When they were out and about I'd always give them a shout out in passing, but I didn't want to run up and bug them when they were on their own time.

The dudes from Arch Enemy were all very friendly. I'd see them in the Casino bar lots of times interacting with fans.

To be fair, she probably never met a professional wrestler before! :P

Yeah, maybe walking up to her wearing just underwear a vest and boots followed by telling her I was oozing with machismo wasn't the best approach..

The ladies of Crucified Barabara - 2015 were all very accessible and friendly. When they were out and about I'd always give them a shout out in passing, but I didn't want to run up and bug them when they were on their own time.

The dudes from Arch Enemy were all very friendly. I'd see them in the Casino bar lots of times interacting with fans.

i also should have mentioned Maggy, from Nightmare. She was so fucking cool! I talked to her for quite a while and she was awesome, always nice and happy to talk to people. That's the attitude!

Yeah dude, the Delain ladies are always awesome. Dianne Van Giersbergen is really cool too.

Getting a photo with Simone made me feel like I was committing photo rape. I told her to have a safe flight when we were in the airport and she looked at me like she was hoping my plane would crash.

I quickly said "hi, loved your show" to Simone when I was behind her in line at the Windjammer and got about the same reaction.

We were sitting at a table next to the singer from Xandria last year. We said hi and told her she put on a great show, chatted for about 5 minutes, and let her be. She was super nice. About 10 minutes later, a couple dudes literally just plopped their trays down at her table with "you're awesome, we're joining you". She was nice about it, but it was about the most awkward "conversation" I've ever seen. I can see why the ladies might get a little overwhelmed, especially when language barriers and sheer social awkwardness abound.

The coolest dudes we met were either Joey Beladonna from Anthrax (everyone who said hi was instantly his best friend) or Fleshgod Apocalypse (even though we could barely understand each other) . The only real asshole was Dani Filth, unsurprisingly.

I saw Gyze in Japan in 2014 and met them as well. Their show was legit and they were really friendly guys. The language barrier is somewhat of a problem but they did try and they were really excited that we (non-japanese) were at their show and they wanted us to talk to them in english even though we spoke conversational Japanese. They fit on the boat more than a lot of other Japanese bands I know of. Their english could very well have improved..

As far as Japanese bands..I'd like to see Maximum the hormone on the boat, or Dir en grey. But I doubt Dir en grey would ever happen, most of them are really reserved about interacting with fans, and I'd say they are an acquired taste.

The long conversation about female band members should have been a thread. Also when is 70k going to go full blown SJW and drop these "gender" classes or add the other 57?Really it is the current year!

Finally listening to Gyze... this is awesome. Reminds me a lot of Disarmonia Mundi, and not just because Ettore is featured on one song. Really excited to see them. (I guess I just made my decision.)

Yes, as much as i'd like to see it, they never did get on that well when they did the euro festival circuits. Even when they played the ones like loudpark and knotfest in Japan their whole fandom came out and there was a clear divide between them and the "standard metalheads" (for lack of a better term). Their fandom is nuts enough they would probably end up booking up what remains on the boat just to see them, and then wouldn't go see any of the other bands

I don't think Gyze will be like that though ;) BTW I thought they were better live than recorded so I'm hoping people will give them a chance. I think the guys will be out and about around the boat as well.

There certainly seems to be a divide between the visual kei fan and the metal fans. They are in effect listening to metal, yet they are polarizing. I don't know if you've seen Global Metal but in the Japan portion Kawashima from Sigh didn't like the Japanese domestic scene at all. As he stated it "Metal is something that's supposed to be cool"

Speaking of Japanese band what do you think of the neoclassical power metal guys like Jupiter and Versailles?

I tried to listen to Gyze when they came up on Spotify but it sounded like incomprehensible noise.

For Japanese bands, Sigh or GTFO.

Ahem. Boris.

And I either hate or love Dir en Grey, depending on the song. Maximum the Hormone is too much for me, too gimicky.

It would be nice to have more Asian bands in the future. Taiwain has Chthonic, but they also have Silent Hell and Flesh Juicer.

The whole huge thread about who's friendly or not was weird. But the 100% most friendly on the ship last year award goes to Bobby Blitz, sorry. That guy is Mr. Social. I also feel that any of the Colombian bands I've met are really, really nice. I feel like I always end up talking to one of those guys, and I never try, I feel weird about talking to people in bands who I don't know.

For Japanese bands, I'll take Shadow and Sigh, Yellow Machinegun would be alright, and Loyal To The Grave would rule (or a State Craft reunion) but not many fans of real hardcore on the ship, so they'd be VERY unlikely.
Hop over to China and gimme Black Kirin or Frosty Eve
