^^^ not to split hairs here Michael ( hardy-har) - but do Ratt, Skid Row, & Dokken qualify as "classic rock?" I always thought of them as 80s hair metal - although I don't really know as I really only know of them by name and don't know their music at all. Did you listen to them in their heyday? (1980s?) I had nothing against them per se, they just weren't on my musical interest radar at that time (although was definitely aware of their names) - I was much more into groups like The Clash, Peter Gabriel, The Smiths, Ultravox, Squeeze, Culture Club , New Order, Black Flag, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Black Box, Talking Heads, Ministry, Madonna , Front 242, The Cure, Beastie Boys, Run DMC, and countless other synth-pop/pop, New Wave, early-rap/hip-hop, & punk/post-punk bands of the day.

Anyway - would like your thoughts on this very important matter.

You being a Deadhead also surprised me because on the cruise of 2012 it took you soooooooo long to recognize my Grateful Dead (Electric Shull) hockey jersey (Dead 1). Two other woman recognized the logo (one of which is Rhia) and the other was a quest that walked by me in one of the dining areas. She had smiled, laughed and said, “Deadhead on a metal cruise, Cool”. Nice story with Rhia and Gnoff while I was wearing my jersey was Gnoff comes up and he prided himself on knowing hockey teams and their jerseys but he did not know what team I had on. Rhia laughed and replied, “Dumb shit, it’s the Grateful Dead”. Gnoff looked at us confused over Grateful Dead? Who are Grateful Dead? We just laughed because the look on Gnoff’s face was priceless and clueless.

Back to the Eagles. The show was really nice. I enjoyed the first half of the concert more than the second half mainly due to having Bernie Leadon back playing in the band and they played their tunes from the beginning to the “One of These Night” albums. They ended the first half with a nice talk about Randy Meisner and Glen sang “Take it to the Limit”.

The first half was mostly an all-acoustic set which was really cool. The second half was all electric and pretty much standard fair for an Eagles’ show. Just play the hits. Joe Walsh was the highlight. Sad not having Don Felder in the band and it really shows and you can see it when Walsh plays. Joe does not have anybody to play off of or challenge his guitar playing anymore.

As for the Classic Rock question, my classic rock canvas is painted from a pallet of many colours and hues from many different eras and periods. No I really do not consider Ratt (“Invasion of your Privacy” could be their best disc and this tune I swear I will still have in my head when I die is http://youtu.be/0VUP4thpr3c ), Skid Row (Do take some time and give their “Slave to the Grind” disc and dare you NOT to “Bang your Head” at least a few times. Underrated and often missed out disc), and Dokken (Classic tune of theirs and one of their best is “Dream Warriors”), classic rock yet but those bands are approaching that period of definition. A couple of years ago at least in this part of the USA; Motley Crue was deemed Classic Rock. I do consider that those bands have some of the best classic tunes and discs from the Hair Metal era.

I also consider a band Classic if somebody has made an impact, change a course of music, contributed something that may have changed or influence our society, how we view/listen to music (remember when MTV played music) also if the song still sounds fresh and new today as it did say some 30 years ago.
A lot of classic rock came out of the ‘80s and some of those classic rock bands from the 70s had their biggest successes in the 1980s like Journey’s Escape album, REO Speedwagon’s Hi In Fidelity, Foreigner 4, and Agent Provocateur, Deep Purple’s Perfect Strangers, YES’ 90125, just to name a few.

Sad to hear of Lou Reed's passing - I was never a HUGE fan of Reed/Velvet Underground, yet I certainly appreciate his talent, influence & legacy. My biggest memory of Lou Reed & his music would have to be hearing the song Walk on the Wild Side on the radio when it came out in the early 70's. Being the (somewhat) precocious child that I was, that song intrigued/fascinated me no end at the time. Second favorite song would have to be Sweet Jane from a few years earlier. As many times as I've heard both songs since then, I've never tired of them.

On a related classic rock note, I saw that Kansas posted on fb today there are still tix available for the opening night of their 40th anniversary tour which begins Friday night in Chicago. Hmmm.... Wasn't planning on going to that (I've seen them a few times, yet long ago), but just to hear Dust in the Wind again might be worth it....one of the best slow classic rock songs, period.

Well, the discount ticket broker Goldstar was offering $15 tickets for this Friday night's opening gig of Kansas' 40th anniversary tour. Bloody hell - just when I thought I'd had enough "classic rock" gigs for awhile ... But decided I can't pass that up for $15! So, of course I had to read up on and listen to some Kansas. Haha - I only owned one album of theirs that I remember buying soon after it came out in late 1976 - Carry on Wayward Son was a huge hit and I had to have the album it came from - Leftoverture. I'm listening to it now on Spotify - it's possible I've not heard this all the way through in well over 30 years. Weird - how I immediately remember every lyric & note. Even though Carry on Wayward Sun was the huge hit from that album, there are several GREAT songs including What's on my Mind, Miracles Out of Nowhere, and, well, all of them really!!

*** just checked my master gig history list, and I only saw Kansas once - October 6, 1979 at Assembly Hall (large indoor sports arena) on the campus of my university (UIUC) in Urbana/Champaign, Illinois. Cool you're a fan of Kansas....definitely another favorite of mine during high school, although I've not really actively listened to them since then! We have a great classic rock radio station in Chicago called The Drive which we listen to a fair amount http://www.wdrv.com/home.php - The Kansas gig tomorrow night is number one on their calendar - lol. I'm off of work today and so far have been having a lot of fun youtubing different bands (haha - one of my favorite hobbies in my free time). I love how youtube brings up so many suggestions of other great bands/videos.

I found out late yesterday that Blue Oyster Cult & Foghat are doing a gig here in mid-December - kinda interested in going to see that as well. I have no idea how Foghat would be though - lead singer, guitarist and heart & soul of the band, Dave Peverett is long dead, and I can't imagine who they have to fill in for him. BoC would be cool to see though - never saw them. That gig will be a wait and see - tickets are a bit steep right now and we'll wait to see if Goldstar offers some discount closer in.

yeah people, I know Ted Nugent is a total ass (or at least became more & more of one over the years).... but I still love his music & guitar playing - always will. ‘The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway’ is Genesis‘ best-known enigma, a project almost universally respected if seldom understood. Often impenetrable and frankly overlong, this double disc effort also features Peter Gabriel‘s most approachable band song in ‘Carpet Crawlers.’ The album, to that point, was Genesis’ biggest seller in its native U.K., and eventually the death knell for the group’s initial phase.
By the time it was over, Gabriel had left for a celebrated solo career, and Genesis had been reshaped forever. Even now, ‘The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway’ — which was released in November 1974 — is a bundle of contradictions, mysteries, narrative twists and real-life turns.
Just like its principal creator, Gabriel.
Genesis put forward a tough character named Rael in a difficult situation — and it had more in common with the Who‘s rock operas than with anything the sometimes twee Genesis had done before. And, from the start, Tony Banks felt they’d gone too far.
“It’s OK,” he told the Telegraph in 2014. “But it’s not the greatest piece we’ve ever done.” Gabriel counters: “[Tony] just didn’t like me getting away with too much, or getting into a controlling position. He wanted to keep check on my power.”
Still, Gabriel has consistently said, “If you really want to define a world, you have to let one person paint it. There weren’t many novels created by committee.”
Gabriel’s novel, dense and full of strange imagery, found a half-Puerto Rican street tough named Rael roaming through a hellish New York City, trying to rescue a lost sibling. That couldn’t have had less in common with an early suggestion from fellow bandmate Mike Rutherford that the group base its next album on the classic ‘The Little Prince,’ a coming-of-age fable by Antoine Saint-Exupery.

We've only played 3 shows, have our 4th coming up this Friday (all for between 75 - 200 ppl) but will be delivering a 25 minute showcase set to close to a thousand people on June 8th in downtown Vancouver.
