    Kissin' WHAT??!?!

I'll have to give them a listen since some of y'all really like 'em.

T is for... Therion? (Might fill a few staterooms, Skipper.)
Turisas? Testament? Tsjuder? Thyrfing? Threshold? Trollfest? Tribulation?
    Outside chance, Tarot?

If we're booking metal-tangential retro-rock revival bands, could the T be The Night Flight Orchestra? (I wish)

Or maybe given that ProgPower just sold out, it could be for Turilli/Lione Rhapsody?

What are you talking about? You mean the 4 (maybe 5, depending on what the hell Archon Angel is) soft-ish metal bands we have so far? Because by my count we have 10 (almost 50%) bands that are black, death, or heavy enough folk to be confused (I'm looking at you, Wintersun). We need more power metal on board right now.

Using opinions to argue opinions. We have 5 too many soft acts. Thats my opnion. Aint this what the forum is for?

    Meh. Arguing is pointless.

This cruise is, always has been, always will be, about diversity.

If you want brutal, all brutal and nothing else - go to Maryland Deathfest.

You want a cruise where you will get power metal, symphonic metal, black metal, death metal, old metal, melodeath metal, is-it-really-even-metal metal, then you've come to the right place.

As it stands we are tracking towards a fairly 'typical' 70k lineup but a little light on genres at both ends the scale. Not much Thrash, Death, or Power in comparison to previous years so I expect those style announcements to pick up a bit.

If diversity was the key wed be heavier on black metal. Death metal is ok some years other years its light. Last year was great. Thrash metal could be better represented. Theres a leaning towards the corset bands each. Id like that to be turned around this year.

Diversity means embracing all the different types of metal to include Christian Metal !!!!!!!!!!
    Antestor
    Place of SKULLS
    Doominicus
    Impending Doom
    Living Sacrifice
I can list many other similar bands , so with the blatant exclusion of a whole genre of music , 70000 does NOT embrace true DIVERSITY !!!

    SO MUCH THIS!

I mean Ted Kirkpatrick of Tourniquet lives in Florida for goodness sake ! :D

I've mentioned many times previous that Trouble are the only band remotely close that has done 70k (and them being classed "white metal" was really only a marketing ploy of their label once upon a time).

And Living Sacrifice are not adverse to music cruises either - I believe they have been on Shiprocked previously?

The only girly fans I know on broad are Razor Ramon and the Statsman, and I strongly dislike glam metal, so I'm not sure what rock you're living under.

    Sexist gatekeeping is fucking hilarious.
I'm only here to do two things: play the bagpipes and gargle sulphuric acid. Looks like we're almost out of acid.

As much as I'd love 60 folk metal bands, we are missing some variety. Looks like we will have the same amount of power metal as we had in 2015. Stratovarius would be a great 'S' add.

I wouldn't lump folk/power/symphonic into one category. Not only because there are zero power metal bands there at the moment so it glosses over that, but also I can imagine a lot of people that like Epica and Leaves' Eyes, could care less about Cruachan and Trollfest.

Also your 'heavy metal' you have Venom (surely black?) and KD (hard rock at best).

Curious as to where you got these categorisations from. A source, or just your own opinions?

Read my mind and typed it out! Nice work StatsBro!

That said, I must take ya to task about your earlier comment about Trouble :P

While I can't speak for what their label did or didn't do in terms of early marketing, the lyrics on every single album have had at least some degree of pro-biblical jesus leanings, just delivered with killer Black Sabbath meets priest/maiden style screaming guitar duo abandon.

This cooled a little around the time of Manic Frustration/Plastic Green Head/Simple Mind Condition when they let their Beatles influences show through quite a bit more and were also likely under some record label pressure to put out some more 'mainstream' metal material, but still, there were very few tunes where there wasn't at least a little 'god' related imagery in the lyrics, even if it was more along the lines of a please kill me now god vibe as opposed to, oh jesus I love thee soooo much vibe haha.

ramble ramble... my point is I think their christian leanings were quite authentic and in no way shape or form contrived or a marketing ploy. In fact, I'm pretty sure that Bruce's religious leanings and Eric's were a big part of their early chemistry and their parting company years later was at least partly due to them no longer being quite as firmly on the same (bible) page as they once had been.

Lastly, I'll just add that posting got me curious as I'd never really analyzed the lyrics of The Distortion Field to see how much things in this department might have changed with the addition of Kyle. Not a lot of god stuff in the first 4 songs but quite a bit sprinkled among most of the rest.

Now, if only they'd get their asses back in the studio for TDF's follow up, I could babble on a bit longer :wank:

    And one more thing!

70K is NOT about diversity. Lots of areas overlooked as doom is always under-represented. 70K is about satisfying the greatest common denominator of many of modern day metal's fan bases, but not all, while throwing in a few bones for a few of the fringe elements while also almost completely ignoring others. Ya can't please everybody and I don't think Andy tries nor should he.

He has a proven model that works despite the complaints and if anyone doesn't like it, I'm sure he'd be the first to say they can organize their own bloody floating festival and best of luck to 'em :beerwink:
So far at least, 2011, 2012 & 2015 were enough for me
    :shred:Book 'em ANDO!! :headbanger:

My general classification, plus some metal archives help. I did not want to have too many subgenres (for instance, one can add melodeath, technical death, atmospheric black, even Lovecraftian funeral doom :P), but yeah i know what you mean. It is ok. Crucify me :D

Well, if people can agree on main categories, we can modify it and keep track.

Yeah I never said that the band were not authentic - I blame their record label for trying to market them as "white metal".

This is what Eric had to say about it "It was Metal Blade. Back then they called all of it ´Black Metal´, y´know, Slayer, Danzig, etc., all those bands, they are ´Black Metal´, so I didn't grow up believing in all that crap and I think that people didn't believe in it either. It was a question about marketing your band in some way, so I had to do it. So I did this. Metal Blade called us as a “White Metal band” and I just wished they didn't."

Some of the band had religious up-bringings which clearly showed in their lyrics in those early albums, but they were not a christian band. A band of christians maybe? But a christian band no. There is also a big difference between a band singing about christian themes, and a christian band too. I would put Trouble squarely in the former category, and Tourniquet, Stryper, Living Sacrifice, and Believer firmly in the latter category. For me being a christian band is not about the content but about the message. Some of those bands like Bloodgood have alter-calls at their gigs - wouldn't ever see Trouble doing that :P

Blackie Lawless is a born again christian, so too are Alice Cooper and of course Megadave. But you wouldn't call Coop, WASP or Megadeth christian bands by any means.

Side note that Ted Kirkpatrick of Tourniquet was even drummer for Trouble for a brief period (and if you follow Ted on social media, well you would have to go a LONG way to find a more christian dude than him!!). (Also he is the most FREAKING AMAZING drummer!!!!). And I think ....

Sorry I should shuttup - bit of a pet subject of mine :)

Ethrivas wrote: Thu Nov 07, 2019 12:14 am Well, current genre-breakdown (of course open to debate) is:

    Death Metal
    - Aborted
    - Aeter Realm
    - At the Gates
    - Einherjer
    - Origin
    - Wintersun

    Folk/Power/Symphonic Metal
    - Cruachan
    - Trollfest
    - Epica
    - Leaves eyes
    - Haggard

    Doom Metal
    - Candlemass

    Heavy Metal
    - Archon Angel
    - Grave Digger
    - Kissin Dynamite
    - Sortilege
    - Venom

    Progressive Metal
    - Devin Townsend

    Black Metal
    - Emperor
    - Kampfar
    - Moonsorrow

    Thrash Metal
    - Flotsam and Jetsam
I mean, Moonsorrow is considered to be in the ‘big 5’ of Finnish folk metal, so I would prob place them there. Although they do have a heavy black metal influence in their sound.

is this chart available to everyone that has the app? I'm guessing not, but it's kinda neat.

I hate labeling a band by where they're from. I mean, folk metal is huge in Finland, so people think every popular band that comes from there is just folk metal...well, unless it's something like Behexen. For instance, Pearl Jam was labeled as grunge just because they're from Seattle. By that rule, then queensryche is grunge, lol.

You lost me... i don't see where anyone decided they were folk metal specifically because they were from Finland. When compiling a list of the 'big 5' of Finnish folk metal, they didn't just pick the first 5 bands that happened to be from that country.

If anything, i definitely think melodic death metal first when I think of Finland.
