first listenable album since Watershed, but nothing on it FEELS like Opeth used to feel, if you understand what I'm getting at? Musical and technical proficiency are definitely there, but the spirit has changed... I can listen to it and not feel mad, but I don't see myself looking to listen to it with any kind of frequency... not even a contender for my top albums of the year, frankly...

that said, you should judge it for yourself, it IS metal again, and it has it's merits, and I'm certain some people are going to be VERY happy with it

(for me it's like Tool after Aenima, I just don't FEEL it like the older stuff)

I see what you mean. I'll have to listen to it when it is released but I admit, I haven't loved their stuff since Ghost Reveries but I'll try to listen with an open mind. Still cool they are making records still, even if it doesn't match the quality of their 90s/00s stuff. Have a good week!

I LOVED Watershed, and I cannot stress enough how amazing the cover of Alice In Chains "Would?" is, but after that they completely lost me

I finally checked out the new Opeth yesterday, and I have to agree with some of the earlier comments here. It was initially exciting to hear growls again, but the album itself just wasn’t all that memorable for me. It seems like they’re trying to merge the “new” Opeth with the “old” Opeth, which sounds kind of cool, in theory. I actually enjoyed Pale Communion and Sorceress. Add some heavier riffs and growls to those albums and they’d be even better. The style works for a song or two, but an entire album like this couldn’t keep my attention. Personally, I wish they would return to the sound they had for Still Life.

Still Life is their ABSOLUTE BEST in my opinion

Absolutely! I came onboard with Blackwater Park, which I LOVED. Then I started exploring their back catalog, and Still Life spoke to my soul, man. A complete masterpiece.
