I’ve been on 6 of these now and would probably say that I still don’t know anyone. There are familiar faces every cruise though. If making friends is your thing, there will be ample opportunity. It’s not really my thing.

There are already some pretty big bands with Candlemass, Emperor, Sepultura, Flotsam and Trouble. I’m old so maybe some of the newer bands are actually bigger than these. There are usually a couple of biggish bands in the final announcements but there will never be a gigantic band. I think Anthrax was the biggest band ever in 70000 Tons history. It’s more likely to be someone like Testament or Exodus.

Andy is the most unpredictable being when it comes to promoting this kind of special festival. That being said, one thing you can count for sure: he ALWAYS delivers 60 bands

As other's have said, This is normal. We don't know why Andy insists on doing it like this, but he does. Every Year. My first year (2023) I had the same doubts wondering if the silence meant the boat wouldn't happen. The more seasoned here advised me that this is normal and all would be made right onboard and it would be worth it. They were right. The last minute announcements rocked and we had a great time. So great we were already planning to be on the 24 boat (and we were) as we walked on the 23 boat. 24 had a long drought of like august until January 11. Many of us again wondered if this thing would happen. It did, the late announcements were amazing and we all had a great time, so much so that Laura and I will be onboard this time as well.

It sucks, but this is just how it is. Join us in making fun of Andy and the silly process, but know that Boat will happen and it will be amazing (perhaps one of the most amazing things you've done).

I can see new people wondering if the thing has collapsed or if they should bother booking what appears to be a shit show. Just do it, you’ll be glad you did.

I still see 18 categories of cabins available. You’d think that by itself would be reason enough to announce the rest of the bands to try to hook the huge fans of a particular band. Or maybe the last 26 bands are blah and they don’t want folks to not book for that reason. Make the fence riders take their chances.

If making new friends is your thing, there are many chances to do just that. You'll be surrounded by others with the same interests and tastes in music as you. As a start come by the Meet and Great at Playmakers the first day. There will be a bunch of Forum members as well as people from the Discord to meet. During the cruise you can also hang out on the Promenade and people watch, drink, and chat with anyone siting or walking by. I'm generally an introvert so I tend not to do much of this (but I do enjoy people watching from a table at the pub on the promenade), although this past Boat I did end up doing more of this than I normally would. I even enjoyed it =). My wife is an extrovert and loves meeting everyone and chatting and has made many friends the last 2 Boats. It's all in what you want, but there is something for everyone on board. I consider it the closest thing to paradise. Great music, booze, and surrounded by like minded Metal Heads.

^^^^THIS!!!!^^^^ I'm kinda getting that feeling too Can't we get the, and I hate saying it this way, but the non big name bands at least; please!!! I'd like to get to know their music a bit so I can make an informed decision of how to dole out my time between them all.

It is nice to become familiar with acts that you have not heard. But from my experience I have seen quite a few acts that were amazing upon hearing them live for the first time and picked up their albums after the cruise. Without Waves, Carach Angren, Sight of Emptiness, Cryptosis, Before the Dawn, Avulsed & Wormed, are some that come to mind.

Absolutely fair; always looking for new blood and I love seeing new bands live for the first time; but there's a bit of an expectation (especially for a first timer) that this would be a bit more "ship-shape" than your average stateside venue. (LOL - sorry my family is full of Navy people, had to throw it in). I get all the outside factors that contribute to not wanting to prematurely announce just to have to recall if something doesn't work out - but what if they are unable to deliver their promise of the amount of bands - has it ever happened where the ratio of headliners to supporting were not fulfilled? I've seen multiple fests fall for that reason alone - and we're just stuck because "too late now....". I'm only speaking from inexperience, not pissed, just disappointed. Not that I'd give up my spot and I will enjoy almost every bit of it (hopefully no hangover or seasickness; what do they say - stay drunk and you'll never be hungover? HAHAHA!) - but this is my one bonzer trip of a lifetime. I won't get this chance again for a few years at the very least. Outside of Subway to Sally and Zenith - I'm familiar or have seen the bands on the bill. Is there anyone new for you this round?

It depends on who you consider headliners. For Me, Devin Townsend is a headliner. Sepultura for this round most likely is due to their history. There have be other symphonic or power metal bands that were Top of the Bill in the past ...Nightwish. Ihsahn/Emperor will most likely get long sets. I am never disappointed to get a mix of some of my generations pioneers (Trouble, Flotsam) as well as some new bands I have yet to experience (Benighted) plus party acts(Tankard, Finntroll, Trollfest). I have arrived early and suffered slightly from over indulgence at the clevelander event. A steady pace works well with me by mixing H20 in frequently. I also dose dramamine as preventive maintenance. the night before and every AM of the cruise. The Year Exodus headlined, many people were getting seasick and bouncing off the walls.

I'll throw in the 70K Tons of Trade Community event at Cafe Promenade on the second day. Should start up around 9:30 before the first bands and go until people get bored and leave. While it's technically a 'trade' event, I'm assuming most people will gladly just hand out their souvenirs. I know I will. I did challenge coins again this round.

Exodus in 2020... holy hell!!!!! That theater set early on Day 1 totally destroyed the flooring haha. They had to evacuate everyone after their set to make quick repairs right before Devin Townsend. And the pool deck set (Bonded by Blood) to pretty much close out the fest (with only Carach Angren remaining after in the theater). That was one of the wildest shows I've ever seen. Sooooo much fun ahhaha

How it is selling doesn't seem to really have much affect on the caliber of bands that are announced late. 2023 had probably the worst attendance of any 70k, and they still added Hypocrisy, Dark Tranquillity, and Dragonforce late, all within like 10 days of sailing...

Looking back at last year’s thread, there were lots of room categories available close to cruising as well. And we still launched with 3,000 fans so somebody must have mopped them up late. I would think that most, if not all, of the 26 remaining bands are known by now. Keeping them a secret is all part of the “fun.”

Looking at Stats' last update on selling out (Jan 2) there were a total of 1059 cabins sold. I'm not a mathematician, but I play one on the internet, and using simple math at 2 peeps per cabin that's 2118 passengers. It's fair to assume it's closer to 3 peeps per cabin on average which would be 3177 passengers. It seems clear they are quite comfortable with ticket sales, last minute bookings as discussed will be minimal, and those remaining hella expensive cabin categories will be filled with bands or perhaps puddin'. They had the $240, they had to have the puddin', aw yeah.

Awwww yeeeah. lol Keep in mind that Stats's numbers are estimates. We never really know the exact numbers unless a category is sold out. Some of those non-sold out categories may only have a few cabins left. Maybe you are better traveled than I, but I don't see lots of NA fests close to the MDF lineup. Taste will account for a lot when it comes to judging lineups but if you are talking about providing bands you won't see elsewhere I don't see anything coming close to MDF. I've heard great things about progpower but surely it's much smaller and more expensive than MDF.

In terms of lineup, communication and consistency MDF is completely unmatched in North America. Those dudes really are next level.

A lot of the fests in NA are great with communication, line up and consistency

And the bulk of that comes from the fact that they actually book the bulk of the line up and then start the selling and announcements

Andy really needs to just become a figure head and let someone who knows what they're doing take over. This fest could be amazing but it keeps shooting itself in the foot.

Maybe you are better traveled than I, but I don't see lots of NA fests close to the MDF lineup. Taste will account for a lot when it comes to judging lineups but if you are talking about providing bands you won't see elsewhere I don't see anything coming close to MDF. I've heard great things about progpower but surely it's much smaller and more expensive than MDF.

I'm only returning this year because my friends are playing (and I promised them if they ever made it back on the boat I'd be there for them) and some other friends were able to get modify their reservation to get me a cheaper room.

And yeah taste has a lot to do with things. Personally I'll never go to PP or MDF. They maybe only get 1 or 2 bands a year that interests me in a location that's just too damn expensive.
Hyperspace has better line ups for my taste but again, too expensive. Mile High Power Fest is new and I've got my eye on that. Only 1 bad band last year, Denver can have some pretty cheap flights and we got a steal of an AirBnB (I think I paid $60 for 3 nights) within walking distance (for me) of the venue

And well, I work with Mad With Power so of course I'm going to say that one's the best (and also why I understand Andy's refusal to do visas. Those things SUCK)

In case we can’t find an “M” band, let’s give Andy permission to use a “W” band with their name upside down. Especially if the band is from south of the equator.
